Yes, I AM that sad about cartoon lions, but I liked the direction writers took with Alex. It’s tragic how he is the most “Americanized” out of all the main characters and longed to be put back into an enclosure, only to find out that he has parents and a pride mourning him all this time. The most culturally disconnected character surprisingly turned out to have the strongest ties to his homeland.
In the army, the quartermaster is the one in charge of—among other things—distributing supplies, which makes perfect sense for Rico. However, in the navy, the quartermaster is in charge of navigation, which is more Kowalski's forte. In both cases though it's not really a "rank", it's a specialty, so Rico's actual rank is still a mystery 🤔

Sorry for the lack of content, I've been redevloping Kowalski's lab! I wanted it to feel more lived-in, and less like a chemist and more like an engineer. It was a lot of fun to make, and I still have some stuff yet to add.
I went waaay overboard on this splurge—I actually went back twice more after the initial splurge and bought more stuff 😭 So I am on a self-imposed ebay ban until further notice! But I'd love to show y'all the stuff I got!
Firstly we have this little Home Depot apron that must have been for some sort of tie-in promotion:
The listing said it was child-sized but I think it's closer to toddler-sized—I couldn't even get the strap over my head for funsies 😂 so here's Skipper modeling it instead!

This actually wasn't part of this splurge; I bought this about three months ago just because it was a cheap listing and I still haven't put it together lol
Next we have this neat Madagascar stencil!
I wish it was made of a bit sturdier plastic; it's very flimsy and I actually had to tape it down to the paper to keep it from moving all over the place! Alex's tail has something wonky going on, and RIP to Marty and Melman and their puny stick legs 😂
Next is something I was super excited to see: a Madagascar lanyard!!
This is from Universal Studios, which used to have a Madagascar themed section at their Singapore park. I keep my keys and things on a lanyard so I'm very happy to have a Madagascar one!
Next we have some figurines from the TPoM series!
This is one of the things I went back later for; they're so spunky looking, I couldn't leave them behind! And shockingly this is my very first merch of my boy Mort!! I need a Mort plushy so badly 😭
Then we have something very entertaining: a Skipper roly-poly!
He has a little bald spot and his head and his bug eyes are a bit freaky but I LOVE him! Here he is in action!
And lastly, my favorite purchases of the splurge: three promotional posters for the TPoM series!!!
The listings said these were given away at San Diego Comic Con panels (from L-R, 2010, 2008, and 2011 cons). The middle one is my favorite because I think that's the very first promo image they ever made for the show!
Here are the images in better quality (I couldn't get a decent picture of the posters without the light reflecting off the frames); I can't find a digital version of that Blowhole poster anywhere so I will treasure this physical copy!

The first half of TPoM season 1 has such a weird vibe. Not in a bad way but it's just very noticeable. They haven't decided what they're doing with any of the characters yet—even the penguins, the direct main characters, take a long time to start feeling fleshed out. This results in a lot of plot-driven episodes rather than character-driven ones, which again is not bad, but you really feel how simple and plain the early episode plots are compared to how wacky they get later on when the characters have actual personalities to work with.
We've talked before about how underutilized Marlene is. It's so clear that they wanted her to be a main character because she's in a lot of episodes, but rarely does she actually have anything to do. More often than not she's just there to serve as exposition, which really sucks because she's so fun when she has a bigger part in the plot. This also happens to an extent with Phil and Mason; they appear quite frequently in the early episodes but have very little to do (come to think of it, both chimp-centric episodes are in season 1 and then after that we see them less and less). I think the crew did this partly because they hadn't created any side characters yet so they had very few characters to actually work with—it's really a hot minute before any other zoo animals start to appear with regularity.
