Well I know that, but I don’t want other people to know. [ it’s almost a joke. he wasn’t totally at the point where he can joke about this, but he’s getting there. it’s the first step, as greylyn would tell him, and that has to be enough for now ] There’s more scar tissue than anything else down there, how could there be more? [ he sighs ] No, I don’t. I just want to be able to walk on my own as quickly as possible. That doesn’t seem unreasonable.
I know. And you will, yeah? But if you injure yourself more, all the hard work we’re doing will get us nowhere at all because you’ll be injuring yourself everywhere else trying to compensate. It’s incredibly common for someone to completely destroy one part of the body while trying to compensate for a relatively mild injury somewhere else. We don’t want that. We want you in the field kicking Death Eater ass as soon as possible, yeah? That means taking it easy now.

The quiet voice against her head, the me too just enough for her to have to start blinking back tears again. In part because of the moment, the raw honesty, and in part because she painted this image in her head no matter how wrong that he’d been hurt by someone. Someone who was on this list of people that shouldn’t exist.
“Me too… no one can. If we did, more would come. Maybe worse. We just have to be strong too in spite of them. Keep living our lives. Someone told me that once.” She nodded glancing up at him, eyes red and sad and tired but trying her best to look determined and strong. The effort was there, the look was… lack luster to say the least.
She’s strong, he thought, studying her tremulously brave expression. Much more than she probably thinks.
On impulse, Phoebus moved his arm to drape around Gladys’s shoulders, and guided her head into his shoulder with the opposite hand. He’d been told in the past that he was an excellent head rest. And, well... he didn’t seem to be good for much else at the moment.
“Some smart person once said that the most important step a man can take is the next one.” He smiled, laying his cheek on the crown of Gladys’s head. “Taking the first step is hard, yeah. But it’s after you’re beaten and bloody that the steps really matter.”

Pop rocks? Those sound unpleasant. Alright, I know you’re not gonna’ love this, but you’re gonna’ have to sneeze again. Or blow your nose. Or something. It’s not going to help you at all if I just clear away the blood and you start it again by sneezing.
[ he levels her an incredulous look ] You’re right. I very much don’t love that. Aren’t they just going to rip things up more on the way out? It seems like that’d be counterproductive.

“I’m like this constantly! Why do you still act so surprised?”
She’s laughing when he goes down until about half a second before he lands on top of her. But at that point, it’s really too late to do anything about her error, so she huffs when he lands on top of her, wheezing to regain her breath.
Her legs wiggle up in the air when he squishes her with his shoulder, and she growls in the back of her throat in a way that would be menacing if it was the full moon, but when it’s just Agnes and not her in her werewolf form, it’s just playful.
She wraps her legs around his middle and tries to squeeze him as tightly as she can with her legs, the purpose for which she has yet to figure out. “And you always lose–” She wheezes a bit. “–because I’m not afraid to bite you.” She snaps her teeth at him.
“You have to!” she whines. “I got you something special, and you’re going to throw off my gift theme for Christmas if you make me save it. And then I’ll truly never forgive you.”
Phoebus bares his teeth right back, lightly snarling at her challenge. “Careful. I’m bigger than you in both forms.” He nips in her direction, like a playful puppy going for its littermate’s ear.
He’s almost never so openly... wolfish, but Agnes caught him at a good time. He grins. “Oh no... Not your gift theme. The horror. Whatever shall we do.” His tone is completely lacking in inflection.
ettootsbrute:
“I’m thinking about joining,” she repeats, though she knows he really doesn’t need her to. “I don’t know, maybe, yeah.” She hunches her shoulders defensively. “Would it be so terrible? I’m not fooling myself, I know it’d be hard. I’ve known you guys long enough to know that. But I just….” She sighs, pausing as she tries to find the right words. “It’s lonely. Not like lonely where I don’t have friends, or I’m feeling sorry for myself. It’s lonely being the only person in the crowd that’s not trying to fight or hide from this war. Either I’m weak for not fighting or I’m weak and need protecting. St. Mungo’s got attacked and it was scary being in the middle of all of that. Where were you guys, though? Fenrir kept you safe. He protected you.” She shakes her head, pausing to scratch her brow. “I need something solid that I’m just not getting in my life right now. And most of the pack’s been supportive of me maybe joining. This could be my chance to finally break free. Would it really be the worst thing in the world?”
“Tilden...“ He runs both hands over his head in frustration. He doesn’t know how to explain. “You have everything. You have a life, and a job, and a family. You could fall in love with a normal girl tomorrow, have a white picket fence and a dozen cats and a cute little garden. You have options. You have potential. All of that freedom goes away if you get bitten. Do you know what would happen if people found out you were a half-breed?” He spits the word out like the slur it is. It pains him to say it out loud. “You’d lose your job, your credibility, almost all of your friends. People hate us, Tilden. They hate me. Just for existing. Just for having the gall to keep breathing when the bite could have killed me.”
He closes his eyes against the pain of what he’s saying. “You’d be shocked, Tilden. At how many people who you think are decent, and kind, and generous, turn to monsters when it comes to people like me.” He blinks his eyes open, fixing her with the most serious stare he could. “You’d be subjecting yourself to all of that, and for what? Safety? Security? Til, Fenrir didn’t protect us. He lied to us to keep us out of the line of fire. He took away our choice so that he would be free to slaughter people without worrying about his pack. Given half a choice, I would have chosen to be there. I could have helped keep people safe. I know I could have done. But all I could do after was put people back together. People who were literally in pieces, because of him.”
Phoebus turns away slightly, not wanting to call attention to his wet eyes. “It’s not worth it, Til. You’d never be able to have a normal life. Not ever. You’d never be able to fall in love and go on holiday, and live your life without fear. There would always be someone hunting you. Your life would be blood, and pain, and you would never be able to change your mind. I don’t...” He swallows down the lump in his throat, trying to stamp down his panic. “I don’t want that for you, Tilden. Please. The safety you are looking for can be found without having to pay so high a price.” The highest price. Companionship, community, safety. All you have to give is your life.

He can’t fight against Phoebus’ excitement, and he doesn’t try to. He smiles back at him, shoulders relaxing a little bit. “That’s what we’re trying to do, yeah,” he says. “I mean, the whole seizing the joy thing. That’s moving so fast too, though… I feel like I’m going under. They’re already mad at me, I just…” He shakes his head and messes up his hair. “Oh, it’s all one big disaster.”
He lets his hand drop from his hair. “Have you found a way to be alright?”
“What are they really mad at you for? You’re about to marry a beautiful, intelligent, kind woman. She’s going to be their new daughter.” He tilts his head to the side. “You’re doing your best. What more can they ask for?”
A deep sigh. “It’s a battle. Nobody really talks about... trauma. The toll things take on you. Especially not people your parent’s age. But even my parents, who are like two decades younger, don’t really get it. Because back in their day, the rule was that you bottle up your feelings until someday you die. You know, like an adult.”
He smiles wryly. “I could definitely be worse. And I’m better than I ever thought I’d be. I lost everythin’, when I was bitten. All the things I’d worked for, everythin’ I’d built my identity around, all gone in one... really shitty night. After that I never thought I’d be okay again. And for a long time I wasn’t. Until... I dunno. I’ve started realizing that even if I never get that person back, the one I was Before... I can still decide who I am now. It’s been almost a decade, and now all that just feels like wasted time.” He sighs again, but with less gusto.
“I thought I’d never have a life with meaning again. But I did. I do.” He smiles wider, shy but intent. “It’s just that I told myself I was worthless for so long that I believed it. And I shouldn’t have. I don’t have a lot of answers, but I’m closer to being alright than I ever thought I’d be, once. And I think that’s something.”
floreo-flora:
Oh no. Here. [ she rummages in her bag and holds out a handkerchief ] It’s clean, I promise. Just hold still while I clean you up. [ she pulls out her wand and looks at him critically ] What did you even do?
Humph. [ he winces. that sound reverberated through his cheeks and forehead. he holds still and lets her work ] Ow. I just kind of... crushed them up with a spoon and rolled up a little piece of paper, and.... You’ve never snorted something? I mean, I don’t usually... you know... I... it was just pop rocks, okay. And I can still feel them popping in my sinuses, so...
mssrprxngs:
He shrugs his shoulders, trying to seem unbothered by it. Or, at least, not as worried as he feels. It’s hard, though, especially with Phoebus— he feels at ease whenever he’s around Phoebus, and it’s something he’s endlessly grateful for right now. “Can I?” he asks. There’s a quick smile on his face. He’s met some of the members of the pack, and as a whole, he’s got mixed feelings at best. Though Phoebus tips the scale in its favor.
I’m just worried,” he says again. “I mean, they’re my parents. We’re, like, the closest family ever, I tell them pretty much everything. They were the only people I told that I failed my Auror exam, I’ve told them all the stuff that happened at school, all the things I was having trouble with, they’ve met like every guy I’ve ever dated, and they love Lily. Who, engaged now.” He holds up his left hand to show off the ring Lily had gotten him. “Boom. But, like… Everything in my life is changing right now. I’m scared that’s gonna’ change too, and not in a good way. I’m too young for this. For all of it. And I know they’re not, like, super sick right now, but I just worry. So much, it feels like I’m being crushed by the weight of it, you know?”
Phoebus listens with a mostly neutral expression. His eyebrows tick up at the mention of an Auror exam. He hadn’t known that James was trying for it. It must have been disappointing, but he seemed to be making it alright since then.
His face breaks into a full blown grin at the mention of James’s engagement. “That’s fantastic, mate! Congratulations! I mean, yes, you two seem like babies getting married to someone as old as me, but it doesn’t mean you can’t. Especially in these times. Seize the joy you can, yeah?” He leans closer, daring to put a hand on James’s shoulder. “And that’s just it. Shit changes. All the time. The world turns upside down on a whim, and suddenly you’re somewhere you never thought you’d be. Suddenly you’re engaged,” he inclines his head with a smile. “Or you’re movin’ across the country. Or you’re unemployed, or with a job you couldn’t even dream of. You get bitten by a werewolf, and lose all the plans you’ve ever made in the blink of an eye.” He smiles a little sadly at that.
“But when you lose everythin’, you can gain everythin’ too.” He thinks about the pack, about Agnes and Katherine and Albert and even Fenrir. Good things could come out of blood and ugliness.
“What I mean is... it’ll be alright. I can’t promise anythin’ about your parents, but I can say that life... it changes. But it isn’t always for the worse. And I think that no matter what happens, you’ll find a way to be alright. Yeah?”
floreo-flora:
Here, sit down. You’re too tall for me to reach all the way up there. [ she gestures for him to sit ] I used to get a lot of nosebleeds when I was younger, though if it hurts for you to touch your nose, we might have to get a bit creative.
[ he sits, feeling silly ] ‘s fine. I’m not.... I’m.... ACHOO! [ he sneezes, loudly, barely managing to cover his nose in time and keep blood from spraying everywhere. ] Ungh... Ow. And I got it on my shirt.
lunabellatora:
Her confidence is almost immediately shattered when he tries to throw her off. She claws onto him, but still can’t stop herself from dropping hard onto the floor with a loud thump. “What the fuck, Phoebus?”
She looks up at him from her back. “Nice to see you too, grumpy,” she says. She sighs dramatically and loops an arm around his leg. “You said not to. But since when do I listen to anything you say?” But never let her be stopped from getting revenge. She tightens her grip on his leg and rolls to try and get him to fall over too. “This is not how you celebrate your birthday, you know.”
“What the fuck me? What the fuck you?” he throws up his hands, then almost immediately regrets it as she tightens her hold on his leg and rolls, upsetting his balance. Arms windmilling, he lets out a loud cry of indignation and topples to the floor, on top of Agnes. Serves her right.
“Since never. However,” he shifts his full weight on top of her in a way that is meant to squish her with his shoulder. “I do generally... promise... retribution.” each word is punctuated with a little bounce, knocking the air out of her.
“And I’m not celebrating my birthday, Aggie. It’s almost Christmas.”
shcwolf:
“ Let’s not talk about my cooking skills, ” Katherine protested with a devilish smirk as she tapped her fork against his. Her ability to move around the kitchen stopped at grilled cheeses and deli meat sandwiches; there was dessert too, but that couldn’t be counted as sustenance. “ I like any meal that calls for silverware. Makes me feel fancy, ” she quietly laughed. “ Contrary to popular belief, my stomach isn’t that big. But I think you like eating off all our plates more than you let on, ” She suggestively wiggled her brows at him as she takes another bite of food. “ It’s fine, you can admit it to me. I promise I won’t run off and tell Aggy or anyone. ”
He snorts playfully. “Gladly. You’re awfully unimaginative, you know.” He grins, and waves his fork right back. “Suppose I do. I just like the food I make, and you lot have the taste palettes of a bunch of five year olds.”
He sighs long-sufferingly. “Guess it’s just my lot in life to make delicious food for a bunch of puppies who won’t appreciate it.”
He’s got his back to her, which is really where she’s got the advantage. Agnes has always been able to walk quietly, and after ten years of living in the cabin, she knows each squeaky floorboard and how to avoid it. She moves slowly, careful not to disturb anything, before she abruptly uses a chair to bounce herself up and onto his shoulders.
“You–” She’s got one leg over his shoulder and her arms around his other arm. “–seriously thought you could get away without celebrating your birthday? I can’t believe you.”
@penrose-phoebus
Phoebus is just minding his own business. Well, okay. He’s actually not minding his own business, he’s working on a very nosy project. But he isn’t being actively obnoxious. He’s alone, and caught up in his own head.
He’s just finished humming Nothing Like a Holiday Spell by Celestina Warbeck when a body crashes into him from behind.
On instinct, Phoebus rears back, trying to throw his assailant. The legs don’t budge, so he reaches up with his long arm and grabs them by the shoulder, reversing his momentum and pulling with all his strength, bending almost to the floor and letting his attacker slide off.
His attacker, who is Agnes.
He growls. His heart is hammering in his chest, and he’s gasping for breath. “Agnes-- what have I said- about sneaking up on me?!”
mssrprxngs:
“Thanks. For not being mad.” He sighs heavily. “My parents are both in the hospital. I had to pretty much drag them there, and now they’re both pissed at me. I know it’s just a cough and whatever, but they’re both old. Like people think I’m their great-grandson old. They need to be really vigilant when it comes to their health.”
“Oh, shit, James. That sucks. I’m sorry to hear it. But do you want to... vent? Or anythin’?” He leans in and claps James on the shoulder.
“Trust me, it takes a lot more than a little peevishness to offend me. You’ve met the people I live with. “
floreo-flora:
Why– oh dear. [ she hands him a fresh napkin ] Have you tried blowing your nose really hard?
[ he wipes his nose ] Yeah. Burns. Bleeds more. Ow.
[ she struggles not to laugh ] I’m sorry, you what?
Snorted pop-rocks. On a dare.
shcwolf:
“ Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t realize all of this was edible, ” Katherine said with a smirk as she helped herself to some of the food Phoebus had prepared. “ Does this make you happy—? ” She joked in-between bites before looking back up to him. “ Well—are you planning to join me or did you just happen to lay out an entire buffet for yours truly? ”
He levels her a look. “It’s a damn sight better than what you can make on the fly, at least. Unless you prefer an all-you-can-eat meal of macaroni and cheese, macaroni and cheese, and more macaroni and cheese.” That’s all Agnes ever wants, or cooks, anyway.
He smiles, brandishing a spoon and then stealing a bite of mashed potato. “You kiddin’? I’m stuck eating the leftovers you all leave like I’m the mother of four toddlers. I always eat my own food.”
