“It’s totally fair,” said Lana. “And honestly, that’s just so shady. I  mean, yeah sure he can have friends — but he’s getting her an expensive gift that you want? Uh, hello? Like why was his first thought not you?” 

Alana was secure enough in her own relationship that she didn’t care who Jake was friends with. But if he was out here getting other girls expensive things that she wanted? Then they’d definitely had to have a little talk.

"Riiiiiight?" Oh good, someone who actually got it. And why this was so shady. And wrong. It felt crazy to Pepper that Buster hadn't even for a single moment considered giving it to her rather than this other girl. "He says he has this sort o' close family connection with her or somethin' somehow. But I don' think tha's a good enough reason." And she wasn't fully convinced of it.

Pepper sighed, running a hand through her hair. "Well... I'll admit it wasn' my finest moment but I...well I did end up kind of attackin' th' girl, but really who accepts a gift like tha' from a man they know's in a relationship? Tha' don' make any sense!"

Pepper shook her head quickly. "No. He sure as hell didn'. An' of course when I was there seein' his name biddin' on the thing I figured he was doin' it for me. Y'know cause 'm a musician an' I thought he cared about my interests. Instead he went ahead an' bought it for this other girl he's close to. Or somethin' like tha'."

She wrinkled her nose. "It don' make much sense righ'? Like I think it's fair 'm mad 'bout it."

"Yeah, words can be difficult," he nodded along, already coming up with a few ways she could start her letter.

His eyebrows rose and he did his best to stifle his excitement. Oh, this was a good story, this was a fun time. "What a bitch, that's crazy!" John said like they'd been friends for years. He didn't even know her name yet. "Of course he did, what is it with guys doing that?" he shook his head.

"You're apologizing to her, yes? Because don't apologize to him--he needs to apologize to you," he said.

"For her, I would definitely start with something like, 'I need to address my actions the other day.' Don't start it with sorry because she won't listen to anything you have to say after that. Go over what you did, like, 'as you know, I got carried away and let my emotions get the better of me', because that sounds nicer than saying 'you pissed me off.' Follow it up with something like, 'that was immature and uncouth of me.' Then offer your 'sincerest apologies' and say that it was wrong of you to lash out and you'll do better in the future." he shrugged. "It's annoying but you're not technically admitting you were in the wrong or anything, and she gets to hear you say sorry. It's a win-win. And an extra win if your boyfriend hears about how kind and mature you were for writing an apology letter."

Pepper had met someone who could really help her. Clearly. He was pretty great at phrasing things. Much better than Pepper was with this attempt at an apology. And he seemed to get that Linnet was also a crazy person.

This was wonderful. "I... tha's true. I do think he oughta say somethin'. Not jus' me." How was it fair that she was the only one to blame? He had done a crazy thing too. And he needed to acknowledge that. Pepper was really glad this guy sat down with her. He seemed like a sensible guy. Much more sensible than some people she met.

Pepper did start writing down some of his suggestions, because they were far superior to anything that she had been coming up with. He seemed like a genius in that moment. "Ya think it'd go well? I mean.. if I gave a letter with somethin' like tha' in it. Ya think she'd get over it 'n tell my boyfriend 'n stuff?"

Roz, unfortunately, had a difficult time relating to this story. She'd never really felt jealous of anyone's behavior toward Bob, and before Bob... well, that was a very long time ago. She also still couldn't quite understand what the fiddle was code for.

Pepper really didn't get what was so difficult for this old lady to understand. The fiddle was fancy and expensive and it was a weird gift to give to a friend. Even a close friend. Pepper wouldn't go out and just by an electric guitar for one of her friends. That would be crazy!

Mim took another long slow sip of her coffee drink as Pepper looked her up and down. The thing was, she really super did not ever want to date Buster. He was way too old for her. She liked being friends with him though, listening to music and showing him arcade games. She didn't need little miss crazypants messing that up.

Again, she was feeling the private vindication of whispering to the wind 'I told you so' at Buster. She wouldn't ever say it out loud. But it was there in her heart.

"Look, I get it, if I thought that my boyfriend was flirting with someone else, I'd be pissed to. But I would be punching him and not her. But he told me that he sees Linnet like family. So. That really just makes you look like the bad guy."

She felt judged and understood in equal measure. Annoying. Pepper didn't feel great about what she did, but she didn't need someone else's judgement. Or at least she didn't think so.

Pepper wrinkled her nose. "I mean he'd be gettin' an earful too but he's too busy bein' obsessed with her an' how she's doin." Well, at least that was how it felt. Like he was more concerned about Linnet's feelings than Pepper's.

And he'd just assumed it was her fault. It was rude, even if it was true. It didn't sit right with her. "Ugh it's jus' so frustratin'."

Somewhere halfway through the story, Roz got lost. "Okay- sorry, I may need you to back up a bit. She made him buy this fiddle for her? And now you're upset with her for... asking him to buy it? Or forcing him to, rather."

It occurred to Roz that this may be some sort of Gen Z code for something else, and she sounded very silly right now. She'd heard of jealousy in relationships before, of course, but the fiddle was perhaps what had her distracted from the point.

Okay, maybe this all sounded crazy when it was said aloud. But Pepper still felt like she was semi-justified in this. "My guy's an idiot an' bought this girl a real expensive fiddle 'cause I guess she's more important t' him than me. But really, who buys a friend somethin' that fancy instead o' his girl?"

She doubted this older woman would agree with her on this. But she needed someone to see it her way too. At least one person. "'m annoyed she's got no sense an' didn' tell him it was a weird thing t' do. Who jus' accepts tha' from someone they know's taken?" She didn't care how jealous she sounded on this. She believed she was right.

And to be fair, this girl wasn't exactly keeping her cards close to her chest. She was speaking out loud in public. It was like she was practically begging for someone to step in and comment! Matt could respect that. Game recognize game.

So yeah, there were plenty of empty seats they could sit in, but they wanted to sit here and get the tea.

"It's all good. I caught a bit of it," they said, as if they hadn't been listening in from the word "sorry". Sliding across from her with their own drink, they crossed their arms on the table.

"My thoughts? If you're apologizing, you already lost. I think you should double down, dig your heels in and stand up for yourself! You said it yourself, she's annoying right? Whatever happened, she probably deserved it."

They sipped their drink.

Pepper lifted her head as this person sat down across from her. They came with opinions. Something she kind of appreciated. Because she was in a mess here. If she could get outside opinion on this, then it would be super helpful probably. Anything was better than what she came up with.

Granted, they didn't seem to think apologizing was the right move. Pepper did perk up a little more at that. She didn't really want to apologize anyway. She liked that someone was telling her not to. "Ya think so?"

Pepper hummed, debating on how to explain it all. "I mean she sure is t' most annoyin' person I've met. She's taken so much o' my boyfriend's attention. Y'know he even bought her a fancy as hell fiddle? How's tha' righ'? So... I mighta attacked her."

Wonderful, he loved that she was willing to just talking about it.

John did his damn best to keep a straight face but that was a better story than he could've expected. It had everything, drama, relationships, violence.

"I mean, you feel justified in it? I'm just guessing since you called her annoying and say that you should probably say something to her. To be clear, you're right, you probably should, at least to look good for your boyfriend." He thought for a moment. What do you say to someone who you jumped and attacked because they were friends with your boyfriend...

"Did she fight back at all, or did she come away looking completely like a victim?" he asked taking a casual sip of tea. "Because that'll change how you should frame this apology." And he just wanted to know. "And did your boyfriend see any of this? Does he know this happened?"

Pepper did feel somewhat justified in this. Even though she probably shouldn't be. But the whole situation was frustrating. She was aware enough that she had acted aggressively. She probably needed to look better with Buster. But it was frustrating that he was so close with this Linnet girl. How did that make sense?

If she examined it closer, she would have to note that she and Buster didn't make that much sense either on paper. But Pepper wasn't going to acknowledge that. "Yeah, I mean I know I have t' do somethin'. I jus' can' come up with the righ' words." Mostly because she was still annoyed by the whole thing.

Pepper snorted. "Oh no she definitely fought back. Girl yanked my hair like no one's business. Girl's crazy too!" And sure, Pepper had started all of that, but so what? "My boyfriend caught us in t' middle o' it all I guess. But he didn' even ask. He immediately figured it was my fault." It was rude as hell, even if he was right.

Hatter's was especially crowded today for some reason. Maybe it was the special or the time of day he'd dropped by but there was really only a shared table option for today.

As he juggled his things and his cortado in his hands and over his shoulder, he slid over to a nearby table to at least get himself situated if the person wasn't interested in sharing. He could always go back to his office again, but Jake always liked a little grading with a view.

"Don't expect anyone I share a table with to be completely silent." He gave her a good natured grin as he set up his notes and student lab papers he planned on maybe continuing to comb through. She'd been talking about not liking someone or something. Wasn't any of his business.

"Anyways, might be good to have someone listen to those rambles if you're really trying to figure something out." He sat himself back, taking a sip of his drink and gave her a nod, "I'm Jake, by the way. If that makes this situation less awkward."

Pepper lifted her head to get a look at the guy who had chosen to sit at her table of semi self-imposed misery. He was a good looking guy. Not her type really, but definitely handsome. "Well tha's good, 'cause 'm really tryin' t' work through somethin'." Was it going well? No... absolutely not.

She glanced down at her paper and grimaced. This probably could use a lot of editing. And some help. Like from this guy who was offering to listen. "Well it's nice t' meet ya Jake. 'm Pepper. An' really I could use all the help I could get on this one."

That was probably pretty obvious from the moment this guy sat down. "Ya any good at apologies? 'Cause I did somethin' not so great, so I could use any tips on makin' that happen."

Rose wouldn't imagine why girls wanted to plan their weddings and fantasize about the big day so long before they had a relationship that warranted it. Though, she had been engaged and graciously shirked her wedding planning duties onto someone who'd actually enjoy it. Rose wasn't against marriage... she was just against marriage to the wrong person and Pepper's boyfriend was bad news.

Pepper was young, hot, cool! Buster was... old, and maybe he had that edgy biker thing going for him, but dating a twenty-something definitely made him weird in Rose's book.

"I guess not... but do you think he's going to propose soon? I thought you guys were having... uh, some kind of disagreement." Rose didn't know what the arguments had been about, but hell, everyone knew they were having them.

She felt like Rose was judging her a little bit. Which Pepper didn't really appreciate. So what if Pepper was thinking about marriage and the future with her boyfriend? Most people did that. Granted, she was ignoring their significant age gap and the other issues that might come up between them.

"I mean he's too close t' this girl or whatever, but he an' I are still goin' strong," Pepper insisted. She didn't feel quite steady with her relationship, but the rest of her life was a shit show, so she couldn't let her relationship be the thing that failed next.

She refused to let it be. "Wha's the harm in dreamin' a little? Y'know? It's not a bad thing t' think of somethin' like this."

Maybe it was stupid of her to have her break elsewhere when she worked in a restaurant, but sometimes Giulia just needed a proper break. To get away from Gusteau's very polite string quartet and carefully curated lighting. Besides - she was only on a short shift today, so no proper lunch break, and no free meal. It stood to reason that she might as well go somewhere else.

She had got herself a cappuccino and a nice looking pastry from Hatter's, and was ready to tuck herself away in a corner somewhere to read a book or scroll mindlessly on her phone or something. There were a few open tables here and there, but there was a lot of loud conversation and furious laptop typing going on, so she decided to look elsewhere.

She was just about to sit down when she noticed the girl with her head on the table. Giulia blinked, wondering if she should maybe just settle for the keyboard warrior instead, when the girl spoke to her.

Smiling slightly, Giulia slowly sat down, putting her coffee and pastry down on the tabletop. She looked at the girl and then at her table, and said, "Oh, that's fine. Are you working on something? I get that, speaking aloud helps me work things out too, sometimes."

Oh yeah. She was drafting something she didn't really feel. Or she didn't want to admit to it anyway. Pepper was a little sorry that she had almost lost control of the wolf in that moment but that was it. Anyway, Linnet and Buster were weirdly close, and no matter what explanation Buster gave her, it didn't sit quite right with Pepper.

"Yeah, but it ain' like work work or school or somethin' like tha'. I need t' find t' righ' words t' apologize t' someone I don' really like," Pepper admitted with a wry smile. "Ya any good at tha'?"

BIOGRAPHY: Ever since Phoebe could remember, the pack had been complaining about the King and the treatment of wolves. When she was young she never much left the forest, her world contained in that one space. But as she became a teenager, Phoebe wanted to see more of the world. She and her brother started arguing, and during one particularly rough one, Phoebe decided to leave. 

She found her way to the city and to the castle to make her wish, as no one in the kingdom knew what she was. And maybe it was foolish, but Phoebe wanted a family and someone who supported her and her dreams. She wished in her frustration, and wished to marry someone powerful. She was even willing to give up memories she had of her family in the forest. 

Soon she forgot all about her grievances in the woods. What grievances? And now she was married to the brilliant knight Sir Keaton. Why would she have any worries at all? It put her in a good position and in a good home. Only… she can’t seem to get her husband to appreciate her at all. It’s been nearly eight years since they got married, and nothing has really changed between them. Except perhaps for their son, who has become the light of Phoebe’s life. 

Her life might not be the ideal that she had imagined when she was eighteen, but at least she can try and teach her son to be more careful about making wishes.

Roz didn't expect the question— she'd assumed they would both go back to writing their respective correspondences in silence. But in retrospect, it made sense. No one warned in advance about rambling unless they actually planned to keep talking.

Well, Roz's interest was piqued, anyway. "Do you want the truth? No," Roz said bluntly, though there was a hint of amusement to her tone, not dismissal. "But why don't you tell me the story?"

Well at least Pepper wasn't alone in being bad at this sort of thing. It made her feel a little bit better about her struggles. Though at least the woman was willing to hear her out.

"Alrigh'. If nothin' else, I can be told if what I come up with is absolutely terrible." Which considering what she'd been working on... anything else would be an improvement. "Anyway, my boyfriend got real close to this other girl I guess, 'n tha' girl took advantage and got him t' buy a real fancy fiddle 'n has no shame at all for takin' advantage..."

She realized she was venting a bit on this, but seriously this girl still made her so mad. "An' then I may have lost my temper 'n picked a fight with her, but I don' think it's tha' crazy."

It had felt delightfully serendipitous to catch sight of Pepper as she was picking up her raspberry caramel mocha thing she'd talked Pip into making for her. After all, she was one of the only people around here that was actually connected to two out of three people. Might as well collect the round up!

Plus, it was always better to assess the level of crazy for herself.

"I'm Mim by the way. I don't know if Buster's mentioned me, but figured I should get the jump on that one before I risked being round 2. Nice meeting you Pepper." She took a sip of her drink.

Pepper couldn't help but snort. "Well yeah. First one ain't even much of an attempt." It was a pretty pathetic attempt really. But it was something that she felt like she had to do, not that she felt it was fully owed. And okay, maybe she hadn't handled everything that well, but she still believed she was semi-justified!

"Nice t' officially meet you Mim." Pepper wasn't entirely sure Buster did mention Mim. But then they usually were doing other things and focused on other things and not some random girl. At least, she had thought so until recently. She glanced Mim up and down. She didn't seem as much of a threat to her as Linnet as far as Buster was concerned.

"But I ain't goin' after anyone else anytime soon. So ya don' have t' worry," Pepper added. "I jus'... Buster really can' see wha' he did or why it's weird an' ugh... I know he'll want me t' apologize t' this girl, but as ya can see... 'm not as sorry as I should be."

“Oh my god, nooo,” said Alana, her eyes glimmering with interest. She plopped right on down next to this stranger. “No worries at all. So long as you tell me what the hell this person did to you!”

Should she be getting involved in the affairs of a total stranger? Probably not. Did she want to know who this girl considered to be “annoying” and what she was apologizing for? Absolutely.

“I can totally help you too,” said Alana with a nod. “Sometimes it helps to have a sounding board, you know?”

Pepper lifted her head up. Oh! She wanted to know what Linnet had done to her? Great! Pepper could explain it and maybe someone would actually get that this situation was created because her boyfriend was an idiot and Linnet took what she didn't deserve!

"Oh my god. Ya'd be a lifesaver. Like... listen, I know I don' look good in part o' this story. But in my defense, it wasn' all my fault here." Pepper took a sip of the drink she had briefly forgotten about in her frustration.

"So this girl's been takin' advantage o' my boyfriend an' he ended up buyin' this whole fancy fiddle for her an' not me, his girlfriend, who also likes music and playin' instruments. In fact, I've been in a band 'n I am a musician. So why in the hell is he givin' some random girl a fiddle?"

Something John had always been good at was listening to conversations that didn't concern him. He loved some gossip, he loved some drama, and as soon as he heard the woman talking to herself trying to work something out, he was hooked and invested and needed the whole story. Because to hear 'in my defense ya're kinda annoyin'' was the best response for an apology he'd ever heard and was immediately obsessed.

And how lucky he was to get offered a seat at her table as he walked nearer. John happily sat with his tea, leaning an elbow on the table. "Thanks for the seat. Couldn't help but hear some of that rambling--sounds like you've got a lot on your mind. Sometimes it's tricky to find the right words to say to someone you don't like," he said, "but, lucky for you, it's my job to make people like other people, so maybe I could help ya out?" He glanced at her page and saw more scratches than words on it--definitely seemed like she could use some help.

"So, what happened, if you don't mind my asking?" It must've been something good if she had to write an apology letter.

Pepper lifted her head, staring at this good looking guy who... wanted to help her out? Well great. Pepper wasn't going to look a gift horse in the mouth here since she was in sore need of help with this apology thing. She knew that she had to do it, even though Pepper really didn't want to. But she was sure her relationship with Buster would stay awkward and tense until she did.

And okay, maybe she had been a little over the top with the girl. Whatever. Details. She cared more about Buster's opinion of her in this situation.

"Well hell, I'll take whatever help I can get in this case," Pepper admitted. "I..." she debated on how to phrase what she did, but really the truth was crazy enough. She didn't need to embellish. She also felt like she had been justified at the time. "I may or may not have attacked a girl 'cause I was mad she 'n my boyfriend were too close. I don' really think 'm wrong 'bout tha', but y'know... I did jump her and pull her hair 'n so I prob'ly should say somethin' too her."
