Plenty of mentions in the Squire from over the years— entering the contests at the fall festival, volunteering with the parent-teacher association, stories she intentionally wanted to be included in for the purpose of her cover. What natives would know about them: She moved to Swynlake in her late twenties— over thirty years ago. She's married to Bob and has two kids in their late 20s/early 30s. She can be a bit overly-serious and is not always very friendly, but a lot of people have stories of her swooping in to save the day with a sewing kit or strain remover etc. She has been the receptionist at Swynlake Secondary for decades and most people who went there would remember her. Other: No one knows about her RAS activities, even the agents.

Roz was not very social at work, but she and Dolores Madrigal had their own rapport, developed over the years. It mostly meant that they traded Wordle scores and other puzzle games, but occasionally they gossiped by the coffee maker, too.

Today was one such occasion. "All this buzz about prom. It is still more than a month away," Roz remarked, watching a student walk in with balloons.

Okay, maybe this all sounded crazy when it was said aloud. But Pepper still felt like she was semi-justified in this. "My guy's an idiot an' bought this girl a real expensive fiddle 'cause I guess she's more important t' him than me. But really, who buys a friend somethin' that fancy instead o' his girl?"

She doubted this older woman would agree with her on this. But she needed someone to see it her way too. At least one person. "'m annoyed she's got no sense an' didn' tell him it was a weird thing t' do. Who jus' accepts tha' from someone they know's taken?" She didn't care how jealous she sounded on this. She believed she was right.

Roz, unfortunately, had a difficult time relating to this story. She'd never really felt jealous of anyone's behavior toward Bob, and before Bob... well, that was a very long time ago. She also still couldn't quite understand what the fiddle was code for.

"I'm sorry- I just want to make sure I understand. You're referring to the musical instrument here, right?"

Well at least Pepper wasn't alone in being bad at this sort of thing. It made her feel a little bit better about her struggles. Though at least the woman was willing to hear her out.

"Alrigh'. If nothin' else, I can be told if what I come up with is absolutely terrible." Which considering what she'd been working on... anything else would be an improvement. "Anyway, my boyfriend got real close to this other girl I guess, 'n tha' girl took advantage and got him t' buy a real fancy fiddle 'n has no shame at all for takin' advantage..."

She realized she was venting a bit on this, but seriously this girl still made her so mad. "An' then I may have lost my temper 'n picked a fight with her, but I don' think it's tha' crazy."

Somewhere halfway through the story, Roz got lost. "Okay- sorry, I may need you to back up a bit. She made him buy this fiddle for her? And now you're upset with her for... asking him to buy it? Or forcing him to, rather."

It occurred to Roz that this may be some sort of Gen Z code for something else, and she sounded very silly right now. She'd heard of jealousy in relationships before, of course, but the fiddle was perhaps what had her distracted from the point.

Vidia was unimpressed, did everyone just have to butt into conversations. Didn't most people just walk away, and pretend they never heard anything.

Besides what did she know about how they bound books, Vidia was just reciting things she heard from a tinker.

When Roz realized who she was talking to, she knew this was probably not the person to start an argument with. Even if she was clearly misinformed on the topic of book binding.

"Oh, er, I probably misheard you," Roz said apologetically. "Thought you were talking about something else. It's an interesting subject though, isn't it?"

Marcy turned to the woman that spoke. Sure, Marcy wasn't always right, but she was pretty sure she was right about this. "I mean, it's not really wrong either," she said. "Well-- I guess I shouldn't say some salamanders don't need to breathe--but they technically don't; they don't have lungs, so their breathing is different. They do it through their skin."

Marcy thought for a moment, thinking this lady probably didn't want to hear amphibian facts, but oh well, maybe she shouldn't have jumped into the conversation, "and technically, when they're in the larval stage, none of them have lungs, just gills. Then they grow the lungs. Isn't that weird? To go from gills to lungs in a lifetime?"

Truthfully, Roz did not know very much about salamanders. And she'd clearly wandered into a conversation that she had no business being in. She didn't even know why she'd done it. Maybe she just wanted to talk to someone.

"Well. You know quite a bit about salamanders," Roz remarked. "I stand corrected."

Collette let out a soft gasp, hands finally securing the runaway soap like it was a live grenade.

She whipped around with a dazzling, breathless smile—equal parts embarrassment and charm—tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear. "Oh my gosh, no, please!" she rushed out, laughing a little too brightly. "Honestly, I’m just grateful someone witnessed that near disaster so I didn’t have to live in denial."

She cradled the soap delicately now, like it might leap again if she wasn't careful. "Thank you, truly. I promise I’m much more graceful when there aren't artisanal lavender bombs involved."

It was the sort of silly thing Roz would never buy for herself. But Kathleen's birthday was coming up, and Roz always sent her a little gift in the mail. She was, after all, the closest Roz had to a sister.

"You would think they would wrap these more securely," Roz grumbled. "Anyway, I would actually like to buy one of those, have you seen the person who runs this stall anywhere about?"

“That’s what I was telling him!” said Leo. “Zoe Kravitz and Channing Tatum broke up in, like, October.” 

“I didn’t even know they were together until a few weeks ago,” said Gil, brow furrowed. “Someone at work mentioned it…”

He’d brought it up because Leo had been talking about doing a Magic Mike marathon over the weekend and Gil wanted to contribute to the conversation with the tiny bit of celebrity knowledge he’d amassed. (He enjoyed movies; he didn’t really keep tabs on celebrities).

The two men turned to look at her and Roz realized she'd made a grave mistake. This town was too small! How was she to know this was Agent 404 just by the back of his head?!

Okay, she probably should have known that.

As a rule, Roz tried to avoid talking to the other agents. It was too risky. And she certainly wouldn't do so for such a silly reason.

"Oh, erm, I'm sorry, I thought you were talking about something else," Roz stammered. "Carry on!"

Chief straightened up slow, heavy boots grinding against the dirt as he turned.

The hammer in his hand dropped to his side. His eyes squinted against the sun, dragging over Roz with a long, unimpressed sweep like he was sizing up a stray dog that wandered too close to his cattle.

"You always make a habit of interruptin' a man when he's workin'?" he drawled, voice low and gritty.

The stubborn line of his jaw didn’t budge.

He flicked a glance back at the birdhouse like it was a damn national monument and not a battered plank of wood. "’Cause unless you know somethin’ about migratory patterns in the southern counties—or hammerin’ a post straight—I reckon I’m doin’ just fine."

Normally, Roz would have just apologized and gone on her way. It really wasn't worth it to get into an argument like this. But she was already in a bad mood today, and the way the man spoke to her grated on her pride in a way that she was usually a lot better at controlling.

"You don't want to make the entry hole too big," Roz replied testily. "They won't feel secure that way. A snake could get in."

Roz was really trying to mind her business, but when she overheard someone say something she knew to be wrong (thanks to random knowledge she'd picked up in her years as an agent) or saw them struggling with one of those random skills she'd picked up (in her years as an agent), she couldn't seem to keep it to herself.

"I'm sorry, I really don't mean to be rude, but I just had to say something," Roz interjected.

Pepper was glad that her meltdown over an apology wasn't an issue for anyone. Including this older lady. She lifted up a little bit, curious what the woman might be working on. It was probably better than these measly attempts she was making.

She debated for a minute and then asked, "Ya any good at makin' amends with someone?" Why not? Maybe the old woman was more wise. Maybe she could give some good suggestions.

Roz didn't expect the question— she'd assumed they would both go back to writing their respective correspondences in silence. But in retrospect, it made sense. No one warned in advance about rambling unless they actually planned to keep talking.

Well, Roz's interest was piqued, anyway. "Do you want the truth? No," Roz said bluntly, though there was a hint of amusement to her tone, not dismissal. "But why don't you tell me the story?"

Dear….

Hey Linnet…

Pepper scratched out the three different ways to start up a letter. See, the thing was… after a run in the woods and a moment of clarity… Pepper was aware that she was kind of in the wrong. However, she didn’t really know how to apologize in a way that sat right with her and that would go well with Linnet. 

In fact, she sort of suspected Linnet might run if she saw Pepper coming. That was why she thought…maybe a letter? A letter could maybe be good. Or how else did people apologize for picking a fight with them and pulling their hair and going a little crazy? 

“Linnet… ’m deeply sorry for not likin’ ya…but in my defense ya’re kinda annoyin’,” Pepper thought aloud and then sighed. No. No that definitely wouldn’t work. “Well what ‘bout…my actions were not great an’ I…suck sorry.” She grumbled and scratched out each sentence she’d written. “Ughhhh.” She cried out and put her head down on the table she’d made her workspace in Hatter’s. She thought she heard some footsteps near her and sighed. 

“If ya need a seat, ya can have one ‘cross from me but I warn ya… I migh’ be ramblin’ somethin’ crazy.”

"Oh, I don't mind," Roz replied, taking out her stationery set. Roz had some of her own writing to do. The end of the school year was approaching, and Roz had thank you notes to write for parents and students who'd given her cards and gifts. Nice gestures that were never required, of course, but that Roz nonetheless appreciated. So she had to do the polite thing. "I'll just be writing too."

She couldn't help listening, though, as the other woman tried to write... whatever that was. It sounded like there was certainly a story here.

Confused Moms Club | Mooz

Roz was more real than Menodora. She was understanding in a way Menodora wasn't sure she would allow herself to be. Both of other people and herself. Is it not worth dwelling on? Perhaps that was Menodora's failing... that she was too absorbed -- too gripped -- by the past. If she were like Roz, taking life as it happened and looking towards the present, rather than the past, Moon might be a happier person.

"I'll do my best," Menodora says with a forced humor. "I wish things could be different, but you're right. I might be spending too much time wishing and not enough time doing. I appreciate you being so open, Roz. Please know you're able to come to me about things as well, I feel as if all I do is talk to you about my woes."

"I asked, didn't I?" Roz pointed out.

Of course, they were much different from one another. Roz had to keep reminding herself of that fact. But it still helped, oddly enough, hearing about Moon's troubles. It put Roz's own problems into perspective. And it was nice to feel like she was helping, in a way.

"But thank you," Roz added. "I appreciate that. I suppose my life's just a bit boring by comparison, really."

"Yes, you're right," Elinor said, smiling softly.

It was what friends were for. To be there for you, unconditionally. Elinor had never had friends like that. Or any relationship, really. She had spent her whole life in conditional relationships, knowing that a foot out of line would end the affection.

It made her value Roz even more. Even if she had been upset with her for not reaching out. Elinor's capacity for forgiveness was necessary to maintain a friendship between adult women.

"Thank you. I appreciate your support. Truly. I do. I know it isn't easy to align yourself with the maligned."

"It's not that hard, if you're me. I'm hardly a public figure. I'm not worried about my reputation, trust me," Roz said, waving a hand dismissively. "Anyway, it'll all blow over. There will be some new controversy soon enough, and then people will be talking about that."

No, Menodora couldn't help the world she was born in, but she wished she were brave enough to shape the world she lived in. If she were a stronger person, she would choose Stella over being Countess. If she were a better person, she'd choose Stella over everything.

"Perhaps, so," Menodora muses, thoughts downturned, much like the corners of her mouth. "I wonder if it's selfish to want more, or wish things were different. I live a charmed life, don't I? I shouldn't want for anything yet I do want for more. Or maybe it's something different. If you could do things over again, what would you change, Roz? If that's not too much of an imposition to ask."

Roz's knee-jerk reaction was to say "Nothing." You couldn't live your life with regrets, wondering what your life would be like if you did one thing differently, or everything differently...

If you'd spoken up more at agent training, if you hadn't been given the role of the agent who blended in. If you'd put a stop to that mission before it could go wrong. If you'd fought to stay in the field. If you'd left that night that Bob found you at the door with a packed bag. So maybe little left turns you almost made, but you stayed the course.

She couldn't tell Moon any of that, anyway. Confidentiality and all.

"It's not an imposition. But I don't know if it's worth dwelling on. I don't think we really have all that much control over our own lives," Roz mused. "Especially, I'd assume, if you have such an important job. I wouldn't be too hard on yourself."

She almost believed herself when she said it.
