Odera Igbokwe is creating Illustrations, Drawings, and Paintings: Melanin Mythologies

Patreon is empowering a new generation of creators. Support and engage with artists and creators as they live out their passions!

I am SO excited to share a new project with you all, a dream project if you will. I’ve started a patreon called Melanin Mythologies.

For this project I’ll be creating 2 illustrations a month celebrating black resilience, intersectionality, magic and myth.

They will be in the same vein as my Sailor Moon redesigns;

Patreon is a platform where you can give a dollar amount per month, in exchange for different rewards (access to the illustrations, process/tips/tutorials, customized drawings, etc). The first tier starts at $1! Supporting this project will allow me to spend less time on freelance gigs that continue to exclude black people, people of color, LGBTQ people of color, etc. And more time creating more inclusive representation.

I would truly love if any of you could support, whether that’s becoming a patron, or simply liking and sharing this post!

For my submission to Angelica Alzona & Odera Igbokwe’s “Pepper Breath” zine, I made an illuminated spread about what Digimon meant to me and my relationship to my brother. It was so much fun to work on and I was continuously close to tears at getting to submit work alongside such wonderful people.

The Digimon Zine Pepper Breath  is finally out and available for order if you didn’t pre-order! It’s a whopping 68 pages of comics and art by 40 incredible artists. I drew this piece while re-watching both the dubbed and subbed versions of 01, which are such different shows but both dear to my heart.

I’m incredibly excited to share the illustration I was able to make for the Digimon Zine, Pepper Breath! 

I chose to draw Antylamon and Willis, out of nostalgia and love for the characters in Digimon: The Movie. 12 year old Michael was obsessed with Antylamon’s design, and may have also had a crush on Willis.

Willis and his partner Digimon Kokomon have an intense story-line, centering on the unknown, negative consequences of a single childhood decision. For a 12 year old, it was emotionally provoking to watch their relationship and its conflict unfold.

So here are Willis and Antylamon, in a better place.

Also, thank you thank you thank you and so much love to Odera Igbokwe and Angelica Alzona for the opportunity!

DI-GI-MON, DIGITAL MONSTERS~!! I created this piece for the wonderful fan project, the Pepper Breath Zine! Digimon was my bread & butter as an angsty preteen. And these eight objects are burned into my memory forever.
