Turn a simple drawing into a 3D printed model.
1. Make a simple drawing or even write your name and then take a photo of your drawing. This process works best with black and white. You can also send a link to a monochrome photo, as well.
2. After I receive the photo I can use software to convert that image into a .stl file that is basically the outline of the drawing. Once I have the drawing in the form of a .stl model I convert it into a .skp file so it can be easily manipulated.
3. This drawing was placed on a token but any drawing or signature can be placed onto any model to be 3D printed. The lines for the face can also be cleaned up but most small imperfections will be cleaned up in the printing software.
4. This is the print preview. It allows me to see exactly where all the plastic is going to end up. I can look at each individual layer and determine whether the print will be successful, or whether it’ll end up in a mess. I can also see how much time and plastic will be used during each print.
5. If the print preview shows that there are no issues with the model then I continue with the printing process. If I ever want multiples of the same thing printed then I can simply duplicate the model and print many at the same time.
6. This is the end product, a simple token about the size of a quarter with a simple face that I drew. This is in red PLA plastic, which happens to be biodegradable.
7. With a little more work this token could be printed completely flat with two different colors. This PuttSkee print that you see below was made with green and white PLA plastic, but this can only be done on dual head printers.
