Now, if you remember I also posted a theory that I kind of think that the Comics, Video Games and Cartoon are all separate universes, timelines etc:

Now, if this is true it would explain a few things better and further prove the different universe theory.
Look at these two pictures closely.

In all of the Sam and Max games, the two seem rather (intensely) protective of one another and in the very first Sam and Max game "Hit the road" there even seems to be some light heartedness between the two, with Sam saying rather romantic and personal things about Max, even Max chiming in saying that they take "long walks on the beach".
I feel that Sam and Max were young partners of the freelance police that also happened to be lifelong friends. And as cliche as it is, sometimes lifelong friends fall in love.
The Hit the road game strongly suggests that sometime after the events and adventure(s) within it, Sam and Max got married... Or... Tried to...
We can clearly see bullet holes in the tux that Sam is wearing. Traditionally the bride comes out last as the groom waits, so Max was not in the crossfire when this happened.
Who would want to shoot up Sam and Max? Anyone really.
-The Mad scientist from the beginning (probably had a robot double to torture the lady)
-Conroy Bumpus and his body guard (who says they didn't survive)
-Some other villain.
The point is if we stay within the LucTal Universe this would explain A LOT.
In Save the World, we famously see within Sam's subconscious that there is a wedding cake and Max.
Then in The Devils Playhouse Sam outright thinks of proposing to Max while running around happy about it within his thoughts.
Now if Sam and Max tried to get married in Hit the road then don't seem to be married or have a ceremony later in the TellTale or HappyGiant games within the LucTal Uni, why is that...?
Because they feel it would bring too much attention to themselves.
Sam and Max live VERY uncanny, chaotic and wild lives and along the way have made many enemies more than friends.
If the bad people knew that the two loved each other beyond being "buddies" or knew they were married then that could be used against them like what happened when the two tried to first get married.
Throughout all the games, Sam and Max seem noticeably more flirty and romantic when in private then around people but when the chips are down they both seem or are outright jealous of one another and would go on a literal warpath to save one another's lives. (Including making lukewarm pork with soda crackers).
So when Sam says "Nah", it's not that he doesn't want to, (get married) he and Max feel like they can't.
Within the Flance-97 universe however it seems like the two were able to get married, have pictures of their wedding, adopt a child and get super torn up when apart.
And it seems Sam and Max are the happiest within this timeline.
Side question...
What would cause the timelines or the multi universes?
Max getting shot in the Com-87/Parent universe.
Ironically it is the only comic that Steve has not finished.
As I said in my timeline theory I honestly believe that the Com-87 universe is the universe that birthed, LucTal and Flance-97.
We see how upset and depressed Sam is after Max gets shot.
Within Com-87 Sam and Max are known to go through time, so what does this have to do with Sam and Max getting married.
Plain and Simple.
You never know what you have until you lose it.
Sam thought of how much he actually cared for and loved Max then tried to change things...
Save Max from getting shot or at least make sure Max is ok...

I'm proposing that within the Sam and Max multiverse, that Sam from Com-87 was so very upset and depressed over Max being shot that he went through time to...
Try to save Max...
Causing/birthing the LucTal and Flance-97 universes.
And maybe adding meat to my much earlier theory of the Adventure ending being the true ending of The devils play house.
I just don't see Sam sitting comfy while there would be a chance to save his timelines Max.
