Just a reminder that with Percy in btl and tlo it’s not just the possibility of dying, I think he would be ok with that, but it’s the whole deciding the fate of Olympus that has him question staying and distancing himself. Throughout the books Percy has almost no fear of dying, in fact he sometimes wishes he would die. But the choices, being a hero of the prophecy that’s the scary thing. Even Thalia went to be a hunter, partly because of the prophecy, to escape it. So how can we be upset with Percy for also wanting to escape it. With calypso thing, that was about escaping the prophecy, not choicing between Annabeth or calypso. Since the titan’s curse he had this pressure of being the hero, a leader, which something he never wanted. Dying is easy, but living? making a choice knowing it will change the lives of your loved ones forever? That’s the scariest thing I can think of. His mom, Annabeth, Grover, Paul, his dad, every demigod, every god, every person, every being would be affected by his actions and choices. So can we please move on from this conversation, and give this kids some slack because yes it was his decision not to pass it down to Nico, but does that not give him the right to not be scared? to want to run away? he would never let someone else suffer in his place, but that doesn’t mean that he wants to face that decision.. And when on the island, he had no doubts about leaving. It wasn’t until he was told that half a million people got evacuated and he exploded a mountain that he started to question whether he should go. And after he was told that Annabeth is alive and would be told what happened to him after his choice.
