I have so many PLANS for Percy and Oliver for the rest of my fic (I'm Standing Here With This Awkward Smile). But wow is it HARD to write them having separate lives during the last four canon book years. I spent so much effort evolving them together as friends at school for like, 100,000 words. So Percy and Oliver being apart for an extended period of time is... rough. It's rough to write and I'm sure it's rough to read. It's a writing challenge for sure! I hope anyone who is reading this story doesn't get discouraged by these chapters of them separated. Because I promise they will find each other again and we'll spend time with them when they do.

James Potter losing both of his parents to disease at age 19 is devastating. He probably felt like he didn't get to spend enough time with them during all those years he went to Hogwarts. Lily also lost both of her parents prior to that, and she probably had similar regrets. James and Lily shared that painful connection of being orphans at a relatively young age, and having to go on with their lives during a war that they knew was very likely to make their son an orphan as well. It's painful.
