It was another day at that haunted mansion, and Janet had told you you'd be cleaning the library.
Michael's library was massive shelves stretching high toward the ceiling, filled with books of every genre imaginable.
Some looked brand new, others worn with age, like they'd been read a hundred times over.
Janet had mentioned it was inspired by his old home, Neverland. That it used to be something brighter... something meant for joy.
Now, it felt more like a memory frozen in time.
You moved slowly between the shelves, collecting books people had left out and returning them to their proper places.
This room was different. Which made it more unsettling. Because it didn't match the rest of the house.
Your fingers traced along the spine of a book before pausing when you noticed a small handwritten note tucked between the pages.
Curious, you pulled it out.
The voice made you jump slightly.
You turned—and there he was.
"Michael—" you stopped yourself quickly.
A faint, almost amused look crossed his face.
"Oh—uh, yeah," you said quickly, putting the book back. "I remember reading it when I was younger."
His gaze lingered on you for a moment longer than necessary.
"I have all kinds of Peter Pan books," he said softly. "If you want to see them."
"I do have work to do," you replied.
"It's fine," he said simply.
He turned and began walking and you followed.
He led you deeper into the library, to a section that felt older than the rest.
The air there felt cooler, like it hadn't been entered in years.
"These are my favorites," he said, running his fingers lightly across the books.
You watched him carefully now.
It looked like he was almost gliding instead of walking.
"You read a lot?" you asked, trying to ease the tension in your chest.
"When I can't sleep," he replied.
Something about the way he said it made your stomach twist.
"When you can't sleep...?" you repeated.
Something darker flickered behind his eyes.
"Come," he said, gesturing toward a small sitting area tucked between the shelves.
You sat slowly, unsure why your heart was beating so fast.
He sat across from you but not too far.
You were able to look at him properly now and he was absolutely beautiful in a way that didn't feel real.
Sharp features. Pale skin. Dark but Bambi eyes that seemed to look straight through you.
It made your chest tighten but you couldn't look away.
"You're staring," he said quietly.
Heat rushed to your face. "I'm not—"
"You are," he interrupted, but there was no anger in his voice.
It sounded amused. You swallowed, looking away. "You just—look different in person."
That was the safest thing you could say.
A faint smile touched his lips.
"Different," he repeated softly.
You nodded, still avoiding his gaze.
Your fingers tightened slightly in your lap.
"Why does this place feel so..." you started, then stopped yourself.
His eyes stayed on you not blinking. Then he leaned forward slightly.
"Maybe," he said softly, "you're just noticing things others choose to ignore."
You shifted slightly, suddenly aware of how close he was.
Too close, but you didn't move away. His gaze dropped briefly to your neck.
Then he leaned back again, like nothing had happened.
"You should get back to work," he said calmly.
You nodded quickly, standing up, trying to steady yourself.
By the time your shift was over, your body felt heavy with exhaustion.
You made your way back down to the locker room, eager to change and finally leave that place for the day.
The room was empty this time.
You brushed it off, moving to your locker and opening it.
Then you saw a small folded note sitting neatly inside. Your brows furrowed as you picked it up.
There was no name on the outside.
Stay. And met me on the balcony.
Your first instinct was to leave.
Everything about this place was weird. Your fingers tightened slightly around the note. You didn’t put it down.
A few minutes later, you found yourself walking through the quiet halls instead of heading for the exit.
You told yourself you’d just look. Just see if he was actually there. That was it.
The balcony doors were slightly open, a soft breeze slipping through.
You pushed them gently and stepped outside.
The night air wrapped around you instantly. And above you was the moon. It was full and bright.
With a faint blue tint that made everything feel almost unreal.
His voice was softer this now. You turned and he was already there.
Leaning lightly against the railing, dressed in black, the moonlight catching against his pale skin.
“I almost didn’t,” you admitted.
A small smile touched his lips.
You walked a little closer, stopping a few feet away.
“Why did you want me to come out here?” you asked.
He glanced up at the sky.
“When’s the last time you saw a blue moon?” he asked instead.
You blinked, caught off guard by the question.
“I… don’t know,” you admitted. “I don’t really pay attention to stuff like that.”
He nodded slightly, like he expected that answer.
“I haven’t seen one in a long time,” he said.
You stepped closer to the railing, standing beside him now.
“It’s nice,” you said softly.
He didn’t feel like this untouchable, strange figure. He just looked like a man.
“You don’t seem like yourself in the house,” you said before you could stop yourself.
He didn’t react right at that exact moment.
“I’m always myself,” he replied.
You shook your head slightly. “No… I mean—”
You hesitated, searching for the words.
“You feel different here.”
“And how do I feel?” he asked.
Your heart sped up a little.
“Normal,” you said honestly.
For a second, something flickered in his expression.
Gone almost as quickly as it came.
“Normal,” he repeated quietly.
You leaned against the railing, exhaling softly.
“I feel like I’m actually talking to a person right now,” you added. “Not… you know…”
“A celebrity?” he finished.
You gave a small, awkward smile. “Yeah.”
He gave you a quiet laugh and it completely threw you off. It didn’t match the version of him you’d seen before.
“I don’t get that very often,” he said.
“You can, you know,” you said. “Act normal.”
His gaze softened slightly.
The wind picked up gently, brushing past you.
You shivered without meaning to.
“Are you cold?,” he asked.
“I’m fine,” you replied quickly.
He had already stepped a little closer. Close enough that you could feel the shift in the air again.
“You should head home,” he said.
You blinked. “Oh… yeah. I should.”
Neither of you moved right but then finally, you stepped back.
As you walked back inside, you couldn’t help but glance back one last time.
And he was still there watching you.
