ATLA Martial Arts: Spear Hand Training
You know that one part of the Toph and Aang training montage where Toph tries to teach Aang how to stab into rock with his fingertips? This is based on an actual technique for strengthening your “spear hand” jab in martial arts. You fill a bucket with pebbles or uncooked rice and continuously stab through it with your fingers. The idea is to strengthen your hands by creating microscopic fractures in the bones that will heal up and allow your fingers to become denser and sturdier. Since Toph is a hard-nosed Earthbending teacher, she makes Aang do these exercises on solid rock.
If you want to see a demonstration of this training method, click here. If you want to see Toph’s version, click here.
Learning about this exercise got me thinking about how Avatars typically struggle with the element opposite to the one they grew up in. A lot of it relates to the differing mentalities behind each bending art, but I also think it might be a physiological challenge as well. Toph grew up Earthbending so her build is literally thicker and denser than Aang’s build. She’s strong, but probably not very flexible or agile. Aang is Mr. Twinkletoes so he starts off as all grace and no force. Compare the difference in body type on their character models:
Going from air to earth is probably a bit like going from gymnastics to power lifting. It also makes me wonder if part of being the Avatar means never being the best bender in one element. You can’t optimize your body for one specific style when you’re expected to master four very different ways of fighting.
Like what I’m doing? Tips always appreciated, never expected. ^_^

Please help a stan out: where have you found so much of Tenoch's work? Because I am struggling! TY.
OMG, YES!!! I love pointing fellow stans in the direction of content. I want to give you my complete list broken out by where the movie/show/etc. can be found. I'll need until tomorrow to pull stuff together so hope that's ok. 😊
As requested, here is a listing of where I’ve been able to watch Tenoch’s works, in no particular order. My access is US-based and may not be accessible in other countries. A good number of these, particularly on Latin-based streaming services, don’t have English subtitles. My (unrealistic) goal is to see ALL of his credits listed on IMDb, but that’s my slight OCD kicking in. The film, “SEMANA SANTA,” is the one I’m truly jonesin to see, so if anyone knows of a way to catch that one, you’ll have a friend for life! Titles in red with an asterisk (*) are my recommendations. I bought, "VIVE POR MI," on DVD which is one I also recommend.
NETFLIX
*Narcos: Mexico – Tenoch is only in Season 1 as a regular and has two brief cameo appearances in Season 2 (episodes 4 & 9).
*Güeros – My absolute favorite Tenoch performance. Offbeat, witty, and pitching the typical narrative structure of movie making out the window, this film had me locked in from start to finish.
*The Motive – Tenoch's character was introduced pretty far into the story. Solid story with an interesting twist at the end.
Dark Forces
El Silencia es Bienvenido
AMAZON PRIME VIDEO
*Blue Demon (Included with Prime membership) – Sixty-five episodes and Tenoch is in every single one! This is an ensemble production and although Tenoch plays the title character, there are multiple storylines happening in each episode. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE how he and his leading lady play off of one another. It is hands down my favorite romantic pairing.
*El Mas Buscado, aka Mexican Gangster (Included with additional subscription to FlixLatino) – OMG!! This film is the PERFECT example of Ryan Coogler’s statement about Tenoch having “rich eyes” and being a “chameleon.” His facial expressions and delivery in this are amazing. Master class level.
*Madres (Inlcuded with Prime membership)– Awww…Beto is the hubby of my dreams. Some scary/creepy content, but nowhere near as graphic as other films from Blumhouse Productions.
*Los Aparicio (Available for rent/purchase only) – Recommending this one based on Tenoch’s hotness level. Let’s just say if he were a chili pepper, he’d be a Carolina Reaper. The storyline isn’t horrible, but nothing extraordinary either. My man dodged a bullet in this one (I will say no more to avoid spoilers!)
*Mozart In the Jungle (Included with Prime membership)– Manu, Manu, Manu!! Tenoch only appears in 2 episodes. Season 2 episode 5 is a MUST see. He’s only in Season 3 episode 8 briefly, but still manages to steal the only scene in which he appears.
Get The Gringo (Included with Prime membership)
Camino aka Hunted (Included with Prime membership)
Ciudadano Buelna (Inlcuded with additional subscription to FlixLatino)
Casi Divas (Included with additional subscription to Pantaya)
The Load (Available for rent/purchase only) – On my list, but I haven’t seen this one yet; can’t say if I’d recommend or not.
Chicogrande (Inlcuded with additional subscription to FlixLatino) – On my list, but I haven’t seen this one yet; can’t say if I’d recommend or not.
HBO MAX
*Son of Monarchs – Oh my! This one holds a special place in my heart. And Tenoch as a scientist is sexy as HELL. His understated, cerebral performance is just…mwah!
*The Forever Purge – I’m suggesting solely because Tenoch is part of the cast. He has significant screen time, and his performance is more than worth the investment of a couple of hours. I’m just not a fan of the franchise. Not my cup of tea, but not hating on anyone who might enjoy it. Movies should be made for ALL tastes. 😉
Capadocia – Tenoch appears in Season 1, episode 3 & 7.
VUDU
(all for purchase only)
*Deficit – This is probably the most difficult Tenoch movie for me to watch. And precisely why I think it should be mandatory viewing. I saw it before reading the opening pages of his book. And I can say that after reading those passages, it was even MORE difficult to watch. It almost seems autobiographical in nature given some of what Tenoch has shared about living as a dark brown man in Mexico. Your heart will break and you’ll want to slap a bitch (or three), but hopefully we all come out the other side of viewing this with greater insight.
*Tigers Are Not Afraid – Tenoch’s screen time is very minimal, but this film is SO amazing. The kids in this one just blew me away, and I typically don’t watch movies where children are the main focus. (EDIT: Now also available with AMC+ subscription. Thanks for the heads up @brujxrio!)
*Sin Nombre – Even with Tenoch’s face completely obscured by tatoos, I couldn’t look away. He always manages to give us something different with every performance.
The 33 – Too many of the casting choices in this one were inexcusable. I will leave it at that.
Escobar: Paradise Lost
APPLE TV
(all for purchase only)
*Nesio – WOW! Tenoch was soooo young
Sleep Dealer
TUBI
(free, but these titles, except, "Colosio," can be purchased at the platforms above if you don’t want to deal with commercials, like me)
*Days of Grace – Whew! Talk about a layered character that goes through a major transformation. I see why Tenoch said he truly felt like an actor after this project. He does not get nearly enough accolades for his sheer talent as an actor. Thank you, papa Huerta for pushing your son into taking that acting workshop.
*Bel Canto – The overall movie was just “meh” for me, but Tenoch as a professor turned freedom fighter is a must see. His presence is commanding, and he just has the bearing of a leader who is steadfast in his principles, even without saying a word. He gave a speech towards the end that was subdued in delivery, but powerful enough to smack you in the face.
*Nomads – I liked this more than I expected. This isn’t heavily plot driven per se, but it attempts to tell a story through everyday interactions. It’s a quiet movie that does a decent job of showing how the lives of people with varying backgrounds intersect. It’s about human connection and all that stuff. Tenoch is cute as a button. Just watch it.
*Stand Clear of The Closing Doors – Tenoch shows up pretty much at the end of the film, but this story is soooo good. This one got me in my feels. In typical Tenoch fashion, he absolutely maximizes his limited time on screen and leaves an impression. There is a scene between him and his wife that is one of the MOST tender and beautiful interactions I’ve seen between a couple—despite their circumstances.
Colosio, El Asesinato – This one is actually found on Vix or Canela.tv streaming services but it seemed silly to start a whole category for just one entry. Although it doesn’t rise to the status of a recommendation, Tenoch is wearing glasses and his hair is slicked down like it’s class picture day Basically a hot nerd who could still get it. For that alone it’s worth a looksee even if you just fast forward to his parts.
VIMEO
*Malamados de Pedro Ramirez – Full length feature film. This has the look and feel of a student film. Low production value and pretty rough all around. But recommending because it’s his second oldest credit on IMDb—and he’s adorable. I feel like I've said that before.
*La Banqueta – Short Film
*Mercy – Short Film
*De Tierra (Out of Earth) – Short Film
*Rebirth. The Mexican Film Industry – Short Film
*¿Como Has Estado? – Short Film
YOUTUBE
*Colorformo – TV Miniseries – There are a couple of playlists on the site for this show, but not sure if either are complete. I’ve seen clips that are from the show that I don’t recall seeing in the actual episodes I watched. (EDIT: There are two playlists and the one posted by "OficialChubbyBunny" appears to be the most complete. The other playlist doesn't include the first episode.)
*Exiliados de James Joyce - Stage Play
*Café Paraiso – Short Film
*Penumbra – Short Film
Cristeros y Federales – Short Film
*Poder Prieto by Jere Caelum – Music Video
*Se Me Va A Quemar El Corazon by Mon Laferte – Music Video
*Nunca Es Suficiente by Natalia Lafourcade – Music Video
Reblogging to add a primo video found on YouTube by @cutelatinagirl -- EXILIADOS de James Joyce. Can't wait to start this one. 😁

Aemond makes a decision about his impending marriage to Alys Rivers, and it's not without its consequences.
You wake slowly, drifting peacefully into consciousness, the haze of dawn pouring into the room, your lover still asleep beside you.
Aemond. He is on his side, one arm slung over you, keeping you close. His face gently rests on your shoulder, and his lips are parted in slumber.
Those perfect lips that traced every contour of your body last night.
Seven hells, I love you.
