It wasn't a glamorous part of town, none of it was, but humans have always been able to adapt to basically anything.
Daily Fix Bakery, nothing grand, but run by ever kind Mr. Lessow. Plus the bread is cheap.
Mr. Lessow's little shop became a popular spot ever since the war broke out, attracting all kinds of people. "I'll take two sourdough loaves and one pack of rye bread."
Which was good, since his wife was expecting. "Hrmg."
"Good morning Mr. Lessow! Can I get the usual?" The usual was whatever was left behind. Burnt loaves, stale and hard as rock, misshapen and hideous, but it was worth its weight in gold to us.
"Good morning Thomas, right away! I have them right here, give me a second." I've always had a good eye for people. Observant, one might say. Even back then I was certain, he burned a few on purpose. Especially on the days when he was in the back for longer trying to 'find' the bad loaves. He was great like that.
"Here they are! The oven has been fussy lately, so there's a bit more for you to take home! Tell me how much money I owe you, and you can get it half off." It was a regular game Mr. Lessow had come up with, a thinly veiled attempt to teach me how to do math. Eternally thankful for that, especially since there's no way I'd be able to afford the bread otherwise.
I remember staring at those thin metal coins and just hoping that they'd mysteriously add up in my head. Luckily whenever I got stuck, Mr. Lessow would help me.
"7!" He was a good teacher. Even though I couldn't read, I was well on my way to understanding numbers and basic mathematics. A very useful building block.
"Good job! You're such a fast learner!" He gave me something much more valuable than that though, he gave me stability.
"Thomas! Thomas! C'mon! Let's go home!" "Yes yes, don't run too far though, stay where I can see you ok?" "Ok ok!" Mary was always bursting with energy, really the fact that she and Sophia were twins was like comparing night and day.
Wish I could say the same about home. Entering through the bedroom window was usually the best bet, you never knew what was happening in the living room after all.
Well, it was a bedroom in the sense that it was there we slept. Mary and Sophia in one, me and Anthony in the other. That's the plan at least. "Hey guys! We brought back bread from the Daily Fix! Let's eat!"
Even if it wasn't much, I still loved my family. We were there for each other. No where was safer than home.
That was the idea. I only wished that was how it worked in practice.
