Okay for context the other rabbit is nanabozho! (Also called Wenabozho, Nanaboozhoo, Nanabush and Manabozho, they have a lotta names--) and he's a prolific and prominent character in many of my people, the anishinaabe (Ojibwe), stories!

I drew him interacting with el-ahrairah because he reminds me so much of nanabush-- they both have a connection to a higher power, their gods, both are tricksters, both are part of their respective creation myths, and both care deeply about their people!

Nanabozho is a shape shifter, while he takes many forms their most common is a hare! So that just made me think of them even more fjdndndn

(I posted this on insta a while back and the artist for the Watership Down graphic novel liked it and I still haven't recovered mentally from that--/pos)

Oh btw, nanabush is genderfluid, no I am not joking--

Nanabush!! He actually has a bunch of names so here is a little guide:

Nanabohzo (used currently)

Manabohzo (outdated)

Weniboozhoo (ojibwe variant from wahboozoonh which refers to when rabbit pelts change for the season)

Mishaboosh (great hare)

or just The Great Rabbit

boozhoo means 'hello/hi/greetings' in ojibwe. There's a theory that nanabohzho came first and then people started using boozhoo to mean hello ( a way to say you know the story of nanabohzhoo right? )

The ‘n’ in nanabohzo actually means ‘my’ and this is the name his grandma calls him. But when others speak to him it changes to either a ‘w’ or an ‘m’ giving us weniboozhoo and manabohzo.

I first learned about him while reading this outdated book titled Native American Myths and Tales. (It has a bunch of tales collected from the early 1900’s and the language has not aged well) I think the best part after reading his story is seeing him pop up as side characters in others tales. It’s kinda like hey! I know that guy! Since pretty much everyone can shape shift in these stories, Nanabohzo is often not a rabbit at all, but sometimes a man or a wolf.

Other characters people should know about include the thunderbird whose wings are so big and powerful their flaps create mountains and valleys. Coyote also has a bunch of fun stories, especially. Iktomi (Unktomi? Ikto? ) seems to be a repeated character but i’ll have to look into him more and see if those are all names for the same guy. Ok I just looked him up and he is a spider!! who can take any shape.

Some things to keep in mind when reading these stories is that, like fairy tales, animals and people can talk, shape-shift, and come back from the dead.

Pauppukkeewiss is also a reoccuring character but i don’t anything about him online. The only thing I can find is an objibwe chief with the same name. When it comes to these stories and native american cultures, you’re really on your own grasping at straws :/ I’m just happy to be able to find what i can.

Stories I really liked in no particular order:

The maiden who loved a fish (so cutee)

The legend of scar-face (also wholesome:)

The Star maiden ( i think of this every time i see a water-lily now :)

The Chenoo, or the Story of a Cannibal with an Icy Heart (this one is hard to find online??? but i really liked it in the book;;)

Snowbird and the Water-tiger (i would have called it a water-panther but i dont write the books ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)

Moowis (PLEASE READ THIS ONE)

The man-fish (i have theories about the man-fish and his “wife”)

The broken promise (a tragedy)

Coyote and the bear cubs: the death of wolf (nothing can prepare you for this one lololl)

Others you should probably read because they are well-known:
