I read a speech a few years ago called The 4:8 Principle – The Secret to a Joy-Filled Life by Tommy Newberry. He came into town to speak about concept from his book for free so I went to learn more. He did a demonstration on stage that made his point click for me in a way nothing else had before. He had a chair and two volunteers. One person represented a positive thought and the other person represented a negative thought. The game was musical chairs and when the music stopped only one person could be left in the chair. That day when the music stopped, the two people fought, and pushed until there was only one person in the chair. Tommy Newberry used this, as an analogy to explain how there can only be one thought in your mind at a time.
Have you watched the news lately? It was filled with negative information because that is what our lizard brain responds to more. We are receiving too much information, how can we survive if we can’t tell the difference between a real threat and a perceived one. The scientific name for lizard brain is called the Amygdala. (Pronounced amigduhla)
How about a different kind of news channel called Abundance? [News announcer voice] Imagine a world where the news reported positive information. Progress over the past 100 years includes doubling the average human lifespan. Yes it’s true, 30 is the new 20. The average per-capita income, adjusted for inflation, around the world has tripled. Childhood mortality has come down a factor of 10. The cost for food decreased 10 times, cost of electricity down by 20 times, the cost of transportation down by 100 times, and cost of communication is down by the thousands. We are living during the most peaceful time in human history. And global literacy has gone from 25% to over 80% in the last 130 years.
We have it so good in America that we had to change the definition of poverty because the rich emperors didn’t have such luxuries. In America, people in poverty are still provided with electricity, water, toilet, and a refrigerator. Most have a TV, mobile phone, and a car with air conditioning. Is your lizard brain, the amygdala, feeling any better?
We can thank technology for this improvement. The rate that technology is growing is similar to compounding interest from your money in an interest bearing account. We have exponentially growing technologies. Moore’s Law describes future technologies coming are infinite computing, sensor and networks, robotics, 3D printing, synthetic biology, digital medicine, nanomaterial, and artificial intelligence. Through technology, our scarcity will be turned into being in abundance. Will you change your mind on the outlook of our world’s future now that you’ve looked at things from a different perspective?
Aluminum was originally discovered a thousand years ago was very rare and worth more than gold. Technology came along and made it cheap to create, now we throw it away there is so much of it. Abundant energy on earth from the sun and access to water is in our near future, allowing people all over the world access to abundance through technology. We live on a planet that is covered 70% with water. Mostly salt water, but right now there are technologies coming to the market through Coca-Cola to the world. The same thing is coming with cell phones; an average man in Africa will have a phone too. Imagine a gadget given to everyone that can diagnose you better than a board of certified doctors. Everyone around the world will have access and the Great Digital Divide will no longer exist. There will be 3 billion new minds who have never been heard from before who will all have Internet access by 2020 and will join in on the global conversation. What will they have to say and contribute to the global economy? The contribution capabilities will be extraordinary. As Peter Diamandis said it, we are ready to take on the grand challenges of our world. We are living into extraordinary times ahead.
