All the times Cassian or Nesta could have been feeling the mate bond on page:

1. LITERALLY ALL of Wings and Embers seems to hinge on this possibility. Cassian’s instincts are in overdrive, Nesta ACTUALLY ASKS him if he used MAGIC to make her feel things 2. When Cassian swears to protect Nesta and her people. Nesta lets him TOUCH HER FACE IN PUBLIC, and then we’re told Cassian won’t leave her side for the rest of the Court of Dreams time there.  3. All that agony in Hybern. Cassian is UNCONCIOUS and in a puddle of his own blood and is still trying to get to Nesta. Feyre thinks that he’s instinctively trying to pull himself awake to protect her, the promise he made or something more. MATE BOND 4. We don’t get to see it, but some serious agony clearly went down between them while Feyre was busy fucking up Tamlins shit in the Spring Court. We know that before Cassian was back to full strength, but could fly again, he started flying to the House of Wind EVERY SINGLE DAY. How healed was he before he tried to get to Nesta? How many times did he pick fights with her just to try to gauge how she was handling the hell she was put through? How many offers of training did she turn down?  5. This fucking moment: “You come between a male and his mate, Nesta Archeron, and you’re going to learn about the consequences the hard way.” Nesta’s nostrils flared. Cassian only gave her a crooked grin. Does anyone actually think they’re still talking about Elain and Lucien here? Nope? Good 6. The crazy sexy intense eye contact scene before they leave for the Dawn Court. EVERYTHING ABOUT IT 7. After the first High Lord meeting, when Feyre and Nesta have left, Cassian just shows up? To ask about the badness NESTA IS FEELING, that wasn’t mentioned to him?  8. With no outward physical signs that Rhys or ANYONE else notice, Nesta knows Cassian is hurt and where. AND THEN SHE TAKES CARE OF IT  9. Cassian helps Nesta center her power to track the Cauldron. He’s both offering her physical support despite being recently stabbed, but also seemed to have some sense of what’s happening psychically/magically? 10. Literally EVERYTHING that happens between them in that final battle. Cassian impossibly hearing Nesta call and call and call for him despite being in the middle of a battlefield. Cassian’s promise to Nesta, kissing her with what he thought were his last moments. Nesta covering his body with hers, Cassian holding onto to her AND WAITING TO DIE TOGETHER

No but guys that whole part in The Lightning Thief where Percy and Annabeth are talking about what will happen if the gods fight and Annabeth is like “I don’t know what my mom will do. I just know I’ll fight next to you” do you understand what a big deal that is to Percy?

Besides the fact that it seems like Annabeth dislikes him up until that point, its obvious that her mom means a lot to her, so the fact that she’s saying she’ll fight against Athena to be on his side is serious. Annabeth’s also a winner; she strategizes and picks the best options that lead to decisive victories in her favor, so she's implying that Percy’s side would be the winning side if it came down to a fight. She believes in him.

Percy is so stunned by what Annabeth says that he can only blurt out “Why?” like why would you want to stand next to a loser on a losing side like mine? And Annabeth, unaware that she is one of the first and only people to ever offer Percy support in his life, calls him stupid for not understanding that they’re friends because she doesn’t know that Percy doesn’t have friends. She doesn’t know that he made his first friend last year and that he isn’t used to people being nice  to him and helpful, let alone someone he met not even a week ago. He can’t comprehend why she would because he grew up alone believing he would always be alone.

But she calls him her friend. Someone she would fight beside.

And suddenly he’s not so alone.

the quickest way to fix HoO is to reduce the amount of povs.

TLH: remove Piper and Leo’s povs. the narrative centers around Jason, since he’s essentially the Roman/CJ counterpart to Percy, so it makes sense to give him perspectival authority. i know the prophecy is about all seven of them so i understand the rationale behind giving all of them their own pov, but i think it’s better to be more conservative with this, esp considering it’s the first book in the series. besides, it allows room to flesh out Jason as a character, which is vital because, again, he’s supposed to be an alpha character in this series.

SoN: this one i’m most irked about lol because SoN is the book in which we are properly re-introduced to Percy. it should’ve just been him narrating, like a pjo book except it’s third-person, because after TLH the reader will understandably be disoriented with the new characters and new plotline (esp since we spent the previous 5 books in Percy’s head), and it would’ve been nice to be taken back onto familiar ground. it would’ve been more strategic, too, since it would be a good primer for the rest of the story. it would’ve provided contrast with Jason’s pov as well. maybe Hazel or Frank could’ve had a pov, just so we get an outsider’s perspective of Percy, but i don’t think it’s necessary tbh.

MoA: Annabeth’s pov (duh) + one member of the seven. i would say Percy, but it might be a little selfish at this point to continue telling the story from his pov lol so someone else w a more or less pivotal role would’ve been fine. i think restricting each book to at most 3, even 2, povs would be best bc 1) the cast is too big—if u want to give each of them a voice u would have to sacrifice something else equally essential, like consistency or nuance/depth, and 2) the plot is complex; adding multiple povs into the mix is only going to dilute the narrative and make it feel fragmented and cursory. as we’ve seen.

HoH: either Percy or Annabeth and one member of the rest of the seven. i think for HoH specifically, 2 members from the seven could also work since we’d be getting more perspectives on the same issue.

BoO: Reyna, Percy, Leo (bc he’s pivotal in the climax) or Piper.

ppl might think this is robbing the supporting cast of a voice, but reducing the perspectives works—just look at pjo. and other books in the same genre for that matter. for 5 years we were only privy to Percy’s thoughts & feelings, and we did perfectly fine. just because we can tell the story from multiple povs doesn’t mean we should, and that’s not bc they aren’t equally as important as, say Percy or Jason or Annabeth, but because the way rick wrote them didn’t really value add to their characterisation. if giving Frank a pov improves our understanding and appreciation of him as a character in a substantial, meaningful way, then by all means give him a pov, but honestly it didn’t make much of a difference and frankly (pun unintended lol), it might even have been better (at least, more economical) to see him from, say, Percy’s pov. it’s less about fulfilling the need to be democratic w the povs and more about being strategic w them in a way that allows the storytelling to be optimised.

one of the things i like best about percy is that he’s not petty. like he just refuses to be bitter. it’s a sign of emotional maturity, especially refreshing to see in a character of such a young age, in this genre, when you’re kind of expected to be bratty and on edge.

he likes people until they give him a reason not to, and he can detect strengths and admirable qualities in everyone he meets without even knowing much about them. he’s willing to forgive, provided you prove yourself worthy of forgiveness, and he doesn’t like staying in a bad mood. he doesn’t judge people; in fact his first instinct is to relate to them and empathise with them. he doesn’t complain, even though he has every right to, and he’s kind of a pacifist when it comes to conflict and... life in general. he fights because he knows he has to, and it’s the right thing to do, but he‘s not particularly eager about it. his impulse is to resist power and even reject it, which is why he‘s lowkey, but it’s counterbalanced by his willingness to take initiative and his empathic capacities, which make him fit to be a leader.

not all YA dystopian heroes have to be chaotic good and rebellious to be interesting. in fact, you’re making it easy for yourself when you decide to characterise them like that. whereas i’m 100% here for hufflepuff!percy, an absolute legend.

annabeth’s mother, athena, a brilliant engineer with roxxon, drove off a bridge directly after the explosion - annabeth was in the backseat

percy’s father poisedon was a fisherman, and the two of them had just returned to the wharf after a long day fishing when poseidon was brutally murdered by a police officer, falling into the murky water below

percy jumped in after him, which is were he had his first encounter with annabeth, as her car sunk slowly into depths, athena at the wheel

after the morning after the roxxon explosion, the two did not see eachother for nearly a decade

after the respective tragedies, the two children and their families had to cope… they coped in VERY different ways

percy’s mother, sally, began immediately rebuilding her and her son’s life. a few years after the roxxon explosion, sally met paul blofis, a teacher from the st. ignatious preparatory academy, and the two raised percy together

annabeth was not so lucky. her father frederick, a professor from tulane also rebuilt his life - with annabeth on the outside of the walls. frederick married a woman who he had previously been involved with, and annabeth was shut out. at age eleven, she ran away from home.

luckily for annabeth - or maybe not so lucky - annabeth was quickly taken under the wing of luke castellan and thalia grace, two homeless teenagers/petty thiefs

so, although still traumatized by his father’s murder, percy grew up in a loving home, and attended st. ignatious where he was the star of the basketball team and had a lovely sort-of-girlfriend rachel elizabeth dare

I will fight to the death over the fact that Percy should have never lost the curse of achilles 

however what should have happened when Percy did lose the curse is the very first fight he encountered after the fact he gets just straight up stabbed. He was a walking shield and literally has not fought on defense in like a year and his instincts would be completely jacked up. We should have seen the consequences of that.

Like two seconds into a fight and he has a sword sticking out from him and he’s like “hmmmm” because oh yeah, I guess I need to start blocking attacks again
