Seems my progeny cut his hair. I am not pleased.
âSlaves in antiquity, as in modern times, were generally allowed to earn some money on their own,â says Ryholt. However, he concedes that we are rarely told how they generated income, though he does mention one example of a literate slave called Ptolemy who made some earnings working as a âdream interpreter.â
This quote from House of Wisdom the blog associated with Nature Middle East wasn't the inspiration for Kezi's backstory as a slave tasked with recording the dreams and visions of a Persian prophet. It does, however, make that detail, which was totally made-up on the fly at the time much more plausible making the character more realistic.
The young priest in training came to me at sunset just as I had risen for the night. The fluttering of his heart was a most delicious sound but the reprimand would be great should I defile another of the clergy. I kept my distance even as he eyed me with equal measures of terror and intrigue. I...
Interesting...can't wait to read the hunt...
How did he....
How the guards had lost @KingFelipeTB, she would never understand. He was, after all, human. And he'd only been human a matter of hours. He couldn't have possibly mastered the skills needed to disappear so quickly and so completely. Yet, it seems, he had.
@Kezaiya was tempted to dismember the security detail that let him get away. And not just because they let him slip through their fingers. She wanted, needed to destroy something. Preferably in the messiest way possible. It just didn't need to be her guards. Their loyalty was unquestioned and she really didn't care to have to break in a new team. Perhaps she could find a human to maul.... she had the perfect one in mind.
Amazing pic of @tygerquinn
@KingFelipeTB was furious. He should have been frightened, sharing the room with a couple thousand years of vampire cunning that had demonstrated she did not wish him well. For better or worse, Felipeâs anger was too raw and overwhelming for common sense to assert itself. Besides, he was King.

A Moment's Pause
After the ceremony, Kezaiya and Felipe descended from the dais, and began making their way through the assembled vampires to towards the door. A dinner dance was planned, of course, but first they, and their guests needed to vacate this ballroom and make their way to another. Kezi realized that short trip might take longer than she thought when she and Felipe were promptly surrounded by well-wishers.
As they moved through the crowd, Kezi noticed several vampires eyeing the new couple speculatively when they thought no one was looking. It was possible that this union was not as protective as Felipe thought. Unfortunately, Kezi wasnât willing to wait to find out. Sheâd had more than enough of Felipe and hi political maneuverings despite the fact that they had been wed less than 5 minutes. They reached the door at last and Kezi whispered to Felipe that she was going to go freshen her makeup.
âTake your time,â Felipe told her indulgently. âWe can make a grand entrance once everyone else is in the ballroom.â
âI wonât make you wait too long,â Kezi smiled and teased before turning and signaling Gem with a nod.
The two females made their way to the Ladies Lounge. As soon as they stepped inside, Kezi sank onto one of the floral sofas that Ladies Room were too often adorned with. Gem hurried over with a concerned look in her eyes.
âAre you all right?â Gem asked, even though she knew it was a stupid question. Vampires donât have variable health.
Kezi raised her head and caught Gemâs eyes.
âI am fine,â Kezi said, effort creasing her brow.
Gem started to speak, then stopped, perhaps thinking better of asking why Kezi had agreed to be bound to Felipe when she obviously didnât want to be. Kezi wondered whether her dislike for Felipe was that easy for others to see. Rather than commenting the girl smoothed some errant strand of hair back into Kezaiyaâs updo then dug into the small bag now hanging from her wrist for lipstick and blush. Kezi glanced in the mirror as she rose to her feet and had to admit Gem managed to make her look totally refreshed with just a few touches. She smiled in approval, as the girl secure her train to the back of her dress so she could dance more easily.
They emerged from the Ladies Lounge a few minutes later. Gem fell back as they approached the King. Kezi held both hands out to her new husband with a smile. Taking them, he raised both to his lips before drawing her into his arms for a far more sensual kiss. Clearly the King was looking forward to the sensual side of their bonding. It made sense. They had been lovers in the past and both had enjoyed it. There was no reason they should not do so again.
âYour perfume is exquisite,â he whispered.
âThatâs because it isnât perfume,â Kezi told him cupping his cheek with her hand. âI have a very special gift for you this evening,â
Felipeâs smile widened as he contemplated the possibilities.
âThen let us not delay any longer,â turning he offered his arm to Kezaiya.
Taking his arm, Kezi answered his smile with one of her own. Gem stepped forward and opened the double-doors allowing the couple to make the first grand entrance of their union.
@KingFelipeTB wasnât nervous. He didnât get nervous. The frisson of electricity coursing through him was a byproduct of getting everything he wanted. After tonight, he would be secure. @Kezaiyaâs age and connections, combined with his ruthlessness, meant few would even think of challenging him and...

Drinks
The Guards greeted her as she stepped out of the car. Clearly, @KingFelipeTB wasn't taking any chances with his safety. Or hers, it seemed. That was both good and bad. Good because if he had his own security, @VinnyT_BD couldn't be blamed for any lapses. Bad, because it would be very difficult to throw suspicion anywhere but where it belonged. Kezi kept such thoughts to herself as the Guards hustled her inside. She wondered who or what they were afraid of out here in the middle of nowhere.
It was difficult to tell, surrounded as she was, but she thought the plantation house, and that's what it was, had an air of genteel decay. She half expected Brad Pitt, or preferably Clark Gable, to be waiting on the porch for her. Instead, she was whisked inside without ceremony and left to wait in the foyer.Â
Looking around, Kezi realized Felipe had not just purchased the property. There were signs of recent renovations, but nothing that could have been accomplished in the few days time since she had agreed to marry him. The place had been equipped with a state of the art security system, in addition to the guards. And unless she was very much mistaken it had also been fortified and undoubtedly made light-tight. Not that she would trust her existence to anyplace with windows during the day. Knowing Felipe a warren of light tight underground rooms had also been added, meaning the construction was the product of months, even years. That did not bode well for her plans.
"Kezaiya, querida, you look ravishing as always," Felipe's silken tone fell like a noose around her neck.
Kezi lifted her chin, forcing a smile to curl her lips.
"Greetings, King Felipe," was all she said.
If her cool response gave him pause, he didn't show it. He embraced her, his cool lips brushing hers, without missing a beat. Kezi froze, caught off guard. In Nevada, even when they had been lovers, such displays of affection had never been part of the deal. By nature, Kezi was private, she knew it made her appear haughty and uncaring but it was her way. Felipe, so far as she had ever been able to tell was just honestly uncaring. Except, here he was, kissing her almost ardently without an audience. Confusing her.
"You will call me Felipe," he told her. "Allow me to show you around our Louisiana home."
His arm around her waist steered her smoothly and swiftly through the house. As she had suspected, many improvements had been made to make it vampire friendly and Felipe obligingly pointed most of them out to her. Finally they settled into what she supposed might be called a family room on the second floor of the house. Smaller than the formal reception rooms downstairs, this room also boasted a wet bar, state of the art electronics and furniture that appeared to be meant to be used. Felipe took a seat on the sofa and drew her down beside him. She'd been right about the furniture. The sofa's embrace was far more comfortable than the King's.
"What do you think," he asked.
"You've accomplished a great deal with the place," she told him, smiling. "It still feels like a southern plantation however, just waiting for the South to rise again."
Felipe laughed.Â
"Good. I was aiming for something very different from Las Vegas. I know you are not comfortable there," he said, his gaze catching every nuance of surprise that escaped her iron control. He wanted to keep her off balance. Not so much so that others would notice it but enough that he would have the upper hand.
"It is the noise and the crowds," she admitted honestly. "Neither are to my liking."
"No wonder you like it here," he smiled. "Louisiana is a nice place to visit, but I couldn't live here, not permanently anyway. But you could, couldn't you?"
Kezi considered the question carefully before replying.
"Yes, I suppose I could. For a while," she smiled. "Swamps and bayous are very different from the desert but similar in many ways."
"Fewer people," Felipe guessed and she nodded.Â
"The nights are not as quiet, however," Kezi said and it was Felipe's turn to consider his reply.
"Not as quiet as the desert, perhaps, but certainly quieter than the Strip," he said.
"Indeed," Kezi laughed "Although the clubs can rival Vegas at times."
"I am sure they can," he smiled. "You've done as excellent job here. The Vampire's Kiss and Fangtasia are both turning healthy profits."
"It was a simple matter of appealing to different crowds," she told him. "Victor was going head to head with Fangtasia, when the novelty wore off, his profits would have declined. It is difficult to beat the blonde duo when it comes to edgy sex appeal. I remodeled the Kiss and took it in the direction of elegance and as sophisticated as the market would bear."
"A wise choice, though I am not sure I wold have made it," Felipe replied. "Vegas is not known for subtle elegance."
"No, it is not. The same cannot be said for you."
Her flattery surprised him, more so because he sensed it was an honest opinion of him. For a moment Felipe seemed unsure what to say.
"Thank you."
Kezi inclined her head, a small smile playing on her lips. Felipe watched her in silence.Â
"Once we are wed, Louisiana is yours," he told her abruptly.Â
"Mine?" she repeated questioningly.
"Yours," he agreed. "We will divide the profits of both states according to the marriage contract but otherwise the state is yours to do with what you will."
"I do not know what to say," Kezi began then fell silent.
"Then say nothing until the gift is formally made after our vows," Felipe suggested.Â
Kezi nodded, her mind working furiously. There would be a catch, of course. With Felipe there was always a catch. She just had to figure out what it was and whether it affect her current plans.
Felipe turned to the butler discreetly entering the room.Â
"Ah, it seems dinner, or drinks, have arrived," he intoned jovially. "Shall we go look at the menu or live dangerously and have something sent up sight unseen?"
"I've always been fond of danger," Kezi purred, "and there is little excitement enough in willing prey."
"True," Felipe said nodding at the butler.
Moments later they were joined by a pair of young women. Kezi suppressed a smile. Both were excellent examples of the rural south. Comely and with easy smiles and healthy curves. @GemRoux would be quite the contrast which would make her all the more appealing.
"Ladies first," Felipe whispered, sotto voce.
Kezi tilted her head, studying both girls before beckoning one closer. She wasn't particularly thirsty and doubted either girl would offer exceptional taste but it would not do to appear unwilling before the King. A soft touch brought the girl's startled gaze to hers and Kezi glamoured her easily. Generally speaking,m a human's personality mirrored there taste, so Kezi didn't expect much when she set her fangs into the girl's wrist. She wasn't disappointed. The blood was rich and healthy but scarcely memorable.Â
As Kezi drank, Felipe approached the second girl who was watching her companion with wide eyes. Though Kezi hadn't done anything to enhance the girls fears, Felipe had ordered only those who had not previously been tasted by any vampire be served. He liked their fear. Even this small amount sharpened his appetite, especially when she almost screamed as he sank his fangs into her throat from behind.Â
Kezi rolled her eyes to watch Felipe feed. She hadn't missed the fact that he liked fear, which might pose a problem. Gem wasn't prone to fear. Her time in the castle had seen to that and Kezi inwardly cursed her luck. Perhaps the girl could be glamoured....she'd never tried glamouring Gem. Couldn't think of anyone who had, in fact. That didn't mean it couldn't be done. And even if it did turn out that the girl was immune, there were other ways of frightening her. Kezi had a few ideas.
Raising her head after sealing the unnamed girl's wrist, Kezi smiled and licked her lips. Tonight hadn't turned out as bad as she feared. In fact, the night had some definite possibilities....
Time to Plan
âIâm sorry, Kezaiya, the King has agreed to all our terms. His only condition being the wedding occur publicly by the end of the month.â
The lawyerâs polished voice held a hint of emotion that probably convinced his other clients of his empathy. Keziâs wasnât fooled. The only thing he was sorry about was that he would be losing the billable hours he and his firm had been accruing throwing wrenches in Felipeâs matrimonial plans. She didnât begrudge him the money. His legal maneuverings had delayed the inevitable for nearly six months. No one else could have managed that. But even he had run out of tricks, eventually.
Kezi hung up while the lawyer was still grasping at straws. Appearing desperate to avoid marrying Felipe would not suit her plans. Up the this point, she merely seemed a strong negotiator and indeed, she had gotten far more than even she had expected. All she had to do was plan a Wedding fit for a King in less than two weeks. And marry him, of course,
Reclining on her chaise, Kezi picked up her iPad. She had already contact Quinn, hopefully they would meet soon to discuss the particulars. In the meantime she had gowns to select and a venue to find.
It was going to be a very long two weeks.
So the question is, just where is @WereDavidWilson? Iâve called and messaged his number with no answer Iâve kidnapped this new chick heâs been seeing, she donât know anything So I started to call the guys that Dave recruited. Holy fuck, they hadnât heard from him either. Did that mean he had...
Serves them right... *purposely ambiguous*
Information, please
The file was woefully thin. It seemed not much was known about @JakePurifoy_BT. Considering he worked for E(E)E, that was, as far as Kezaiya was concerned, an unacceptable state of affairs. one she was planning to rectify immediately with a call to @TygerQuinn and @VinnyT_BD. Of course she wouldn't tell them why she wanted more information. The last thing she needed was to tip her hand to the Were. Not that Vinny would betray Kezi's interests but she wouldn't put it past the shifter. No, Vinny's complication was his daygirl, @GemRoux. From what Kezi had overheard, Jake and his mysterious lady friend were plotting something that involved Gem. She didn't think the girl was aware she was being targeted, which meant she wasn't part of the plot. Letting her, or Vinny in, on that secret might not be the wisest thing to do. In Kezi's experience, cornered wolves fight and she wasn't prepared to fight a wolf born into a fighting Pack without more information. What little she knew didn't raise any flags. It didn't reassure her, either. He had no living family. He had been engaged. In fact, he should have married @AbbyMasonBT this past week but something had happened and the wedding, planned through E(E)E had been cancelled and not rescheduled. His current address was the same as a @TrayDawsonBT . Since it was not quite the same as Gem's and someone named @TineByrne she assumed the two men shared the house she had seen while the women each had their own apartment. That was unusual. Though perhaps not. Women these days prized their independence and Gem probably clung to hers more than most given the years she had spent in the tender care of vampires. Kezi massaged her fangs with the tips of her fingers, replaying the conversation from the previous night in her head. Purifoy and his companion had mentioned using Gem to get to Kezaiya herself, something which was patently impossible. Kezi had no attached to Gem beyond business and even that was tenuous. Besides, they seemed to have no real connection with Gem. Oh they were acquainted but Kezi hadn't missed the fact that Gem was eating alone and didn't seem to want to discuss business in front of them. More troubling was their plan to use Dawson to get to Gem. Kezi had no idea whether that would work and wasn't interested in waiting to find out. She reached for the phone.
The more things change....
Standing on the dock in New Orleans, Kezaiya watched the private yacht sail into the sunset. The irony wasn't lost upon her but she couldn't deny that it was somehow fitting that Elizabeth was sailing into the first sunshine she would see in centuries. The time it would take to sail across the Atlantic and then the Mediterranean would give her time to adjust to being human once more. Kezaiya doubted it would be easy or comfortable. She just hoped her friend would survive it and the next few years. The guards fell in behind her as she turned her steps back to the City and the compound. She wasn't thrilled to have them and didn't trust them but it was the concession she had made in order to send Roya home. Kezaiya knew her companion had summoned her replacement from her village and made other arrangements as well but so far only the official black-clad guards had manifested. Kezaiya hoped she would be happier with Roya's other choices. She wasn't in any particular hurry as she wandered through the streets of the French Quarter. The weekend crowds of humans, sprinkled with shape-shifters and vampires barely registered upon her as they parted before her. Now and again, there were flashes of light indicating someone had taken a picture. She let the guards handle that. She didn't care one way or another if her image was captured walking along Bourbon Street. New Orleans was known for attracting vampires and now that Elizabeth was safely away, Kezaiya saw no reason to hide her presence or that of her guards. So long as no one got too close, that was. As she walked Kezaiya considered what Gem had done. Not usually one to give much consideration to the humans around her, she felt sympathy, perhaps even empathy for the strange young woman caught in a situation she neither created nor control. Gem's willingness to help Elizabeth had not surprised Kezaiya. It was the obvious fact that no one had ever asked Gem, for her help or even her consent that had shocked her. If all her encounters with the Authority and vampire royalty were like the emergency later that night, Kezaiya didn't begrudge the girl or her guardians wariness and ill-manners. A reluctant smile curled her lips as she thought of Vinny's anger and useless hostility towards her and the circumstances. Anger she had shared. Perhaps she should share the fact that the fool responsible was no longer a problem. She had met the True Death at Kezaiya's hands within an hour of Vinny taking Gem away. Kezaiya frowned. The girl had not looked well. The more pressing need had been to get control of the newborn vampire who had sprung at Gem's throat more like the beast he was than a vampire meant she had not had the time to finish the meeting she had called. And if she was not mistaken, neither would be all that happy to come speak with her again. She would go to them, Kezaiya decided. There was no reason she could or should not. Especially since Gem had taken rooms from a Were in Bon Temps, which was part of the state Kezaiya needed to keep an eye on. Without consulting anyone, Kezaiya reached for her personal phone and quickly typed out a email to Gem informing her that Kezaiya would be stopping by to see her on night...very soon.
~Tiger Counseling~
I woke up to see @WereQuinn sitting on the corner of the bed. When did he get here? HOW did he get here? How did I end up in bed?
I sat up slowly, my head pounding painfully.
âHey JohnâŚâ I watched him move closer, grabbing a bottle of water from behind him.
âDrink this. The whole thing. Iâm not playing, Abby.â
Quinn looked pretty serious, so I took the bottle and drank it as fast as I could. He talked while I drank.
âSo yesterday I get an e-mail from Jake. Just says, cancel the wedding. Thatâs it. No calls, not a text. I thought at least Iâd have heard from you. Then last night, you called me. Drunk. Saying no wedding, weâre going to the Bahamas instead? Abby, what the hell is going on? You wanna explain to me?â
He watched me down the bottle with a steady glare. I honestly didnât know if it was angerâŚwhether at me, or ⌠or if it might have been the inconvenience of having to cancel a very small, elegant wedding with almost no refund.
âIâm sorry I caused you trouble.â
Apparently it wasnât inconvenienceâŚ
âAbby?! God damn it. I wanna know what happened. I donât give a shit about the wedding.â
I leaned back and put the empty bottle on the night stand. The pillows felt good behind me. But they made me think of the warm, living pillow Iâd grown accustomed to over the last year. I leaned forward again.
âQuinn I just donât want to talk about it. Things didnât work, and thatâs all that matters.â
His eyes narrowed and I assumed he was guessing. And he was probably guessing right.
âAbby⌠you need to. Just deal with it and let it go.â
I looked deeper into those odd lilac colored eyes. Just deal with it? I gave this man EVERYTHING. I changed for him. I went through hell to forget him the first time and it didnât even work. I changed into a wolf. I was cursed with this voodoo ora I wanted nothing to do with, really. Every relationship I tried failed because I compared everyone to Jake Purifoy. And I was supposed to justâŚdeal with it?
âAre you out of your damn mind? Have you ever been in love Quinn? Have you ever went into a situation KNOWING this was the best youâd ever get and then lost it?â
He looked even angrier, if that were possible. He rose to his feet and pulled me off the bed by the arms, shook me.
âAbby Mason. You are a strong, funny, beautiful girl. And if you think heâs the best thing thatâs gonna happen to you, youâre fucking wrong. A man that loves you doesnât run off for weeks with no word. He doesnât hide things from you. He doesnât lie to you. He adores you. He lets you know how much you mean to him, in his own way. He sure as hell doesnât leave you two days before your fucking wedding.â
I felt my body weaken in his grasp. Quinn held me up by my elbows. He was right. Jake had done all of those things. And more that Quinn didnât know of to list. Whether it was the time he spent as a vampire, or Tine, or just the hole in his heart Iâd punched in it two years ago, he wasnât the same man.Â
Jake had changed. And I was in love with the Jake that took me out on my birthday. That made love to me for this first on a beach in Savannah. That looked at me with no glaze over his eyes. Wasnât always calculating his next move.
I nodded weakly, and Quinn set me back on the bed, taking the place beside me. I leaned on him without knowing, and his arm slid around me.
âIâll be here as long as you need me, Abby. For whatever you need.â
I felt slightly more whole again. I had a great friend in Quinn. Another out moving around in the kitchen in Galina. I was blessed. Even if not in love.
The broken pieces of my shattered soul would find their way back together again. Even though it didnât feel like it right now, Iâd find a way to live without Jake Purifoy.
I had to.
