One reason to watch the winter Olympics …
Olympian Chris Mazdzer is sexy as fuck. Omg.
The olive tree of Vouves Hailed as one of the world’s older trees this amazing specimen is still producing olives many lifetimes after it was first planted. Found on the Greek island of Crete its age is hard to determine as the heartwood has long since rotted away, meaning that a tree ring record is unobtainable, though the existing rings make it some 2,000 years old. Scientists estimate its true age as double that, meaning that it was sown during the bronze age some 1,200 years before Homer is thought to have written down the older oral tradition we now know as the Iliad. The trunk perimeter is 12.5 metres and its diameter is 4.6. the tree was declared a protected natural monument 1997 and has a nearby museum displaying traditional olive growing equipment. The tree’s branches were used in the weaving of the victory wreaths for the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games held in Athens and Beijing respectively. Loz Image credit: Olive Tree Museum of Vouves
