"I hereby grant you top secret clearance to all information pertaining to Project Hail Mary."
Eva Stratt. Head of the Petrova Task Force. Chair of Project Hail Mary.
“You seem… out of place.” Omen tilted his head just a little, trying to gain a better understanding of the other. ( @omenthegylph )
@omenthegylph
Clad in mostly black, away from the crowds, was a single soul on a park bench, quietly observing the scenes unfolding in front of her. A quiet shadow in the midst of all the people.
Underneath the weak sunlight, families in the distance were playing with their children in the slowly thawing snow. The sounds of kids laughing and doing snowball fights echoed across the park. People in pairs, perhaps couples, friends, or strangers, talked casually as they trudged through the slowly thinning layers of snow.
Eva Stratt knew it would be a long, long time before people would willingly spend their days outside again.
The gentleman's words snap her out of her thoughts. But she doesn't look towards him. Her eyes are still focused on the people in the distance, as she replies back.
"Am I?"
Eva Stratt adjusts the black trenchcoat collar around her neck, bringing the fabric closer to it. She also fixes the navy blue beanie on her head, letting her hair fall to cover her neck (and her tattoo). She fiddles with the gloves on her hands, adjusting them slightly in an attempt to keep her hands warm for longer.
"It's a little chilly today."

"Y'know, I only eat fresh fruit and veggies when the lunch ladies - and one lunch guy - slap 'em on my tray?" Ryland stirred his cup noodles absent-mindedly with his fork. "So much for my five-a-day, huh?"
Eva Stratt knocked on the door where he was at and signaled with her head to meet her at the entrance.
"Dr. Grace. Let's go. We're leaving."
It doesn't matter what he's doing.
She's taking him with her.

I'm coming home...

"You’re a long way from home," said Dark quietly, almost sympathetically before he continued, "I'm a long way from home too." ( @omenthegylph )
@omenthegylph
The first sensation that came back to Eva Stratt was pain. Her arms, legs, and back hurt. Opening her eyes, she realized she was on the floor. Her head was in pain. She forced herself up to her feet and pushed through it, as she took stock of her surroundings. Nothing seemed familiar.
She should've been greeted with the stone gray of prison walls or the white cold expanse of Earth's frozen over oceans. Or... something... something else.
Beep, Beep.
The residual beeping sound came to her mind as quickly as it left, barely registering in Eva's mind. The piercing pain in her head made sure of that. Flashes of Earth's scenery came to mind as she tried to piece together where she is or might be. Nothing seemed to fit.
"You’re a long way from home,"
The nearby voice cut through the pain in her head, but it took a bit longer for the words to sink in.
She's a long way from home?
Her first thought was that, this person might be referring to the fact that they're a long way from her home in Germany?
But the second thought that came to mind, was honed from years of work on the Petrova Task Force and Project Hail Mary. Her mind was trained to prepare for the worst possible scenarios, no matter how unlikely. With the discovery of Astrophage and countless stars like Tau Ceti, could it be that what the stranger meant was that she's a long way from Earth?
She took a deep breaths until the piercing pain dulled into something more manageable.
She really didn't want to entertain the second one. It was easier for her to believe that perhaps she was taken to some place on Earth she's never seen before. Maybe one of those places she's flown over when she's had to take meetings. Even she knew the second one was a bit too far-fetched. Probably the product of her mind trying to make sense of everything by jumping to conclusions. Besides, she would've remembered taking an intergalatic journey.
But this speculation doesn't help her.
Perhaps Occam's razor would have mercy on her, but then again, maybe not. She couldn't take any chances.
She needed information. She needed answers. Then she could figure something out.
"Do you know where we are?"
@laikalike continued from here
Ever since Dr. Ryland Grace came back of his own volition to work with the Astrophage, Eva Stratt seized the opportunity. While she needed him in case things went wrong with the examination of the Petrova line samples initially, he managed to puzzle out answers to her most pressing questions, even without help from additional scientists.
But more than that, the fact that he came back voluntarily was not something she took lightly. If there's one thing that Eva Stratt knew from working with people in governments, it's that they were full of sycophants. People who wanted nothing more than to use the efforts of others and their reputations to cause their own star to rise. She's seen how power and ego can corrupt even the most innocent of intentions and efforts. She's seen it in how the nations of the world treat her when she's making decisions regarding resource allocation and supplies.
Reading his paper: An Analysis of Water Based Assumptions and Re-calibrations of Expectations for Evolutionary Models and talking to other people in the field, it was clear that Ryland Grace was an outsider in more ways than one. His background showed as much as well. No one in the academic community wanted anything to do with him. No immediate family. No pets.
He was an independent voice - someone who wasn't working on behalf of another government. But he was also dedicated to the project to make sure humanity survived. Once he showed his dedication, giving him Top Secret Clearance was next on the list. This way too, she wouldn't have to play telephone. He could hear for himself the status of the project and where it was - both in terms of the science and engineering aspects. For six weeks, she took him with her - had him distill down the complicated science jargon, get his view on what was said, and discuss next steps.
As she sipped her coffees and scrolled through her tablet, Eva Stratt felt eyes on her. She addressed him directly, thinking he had something to say, but instead he turned away and apologized.
At Dr. Grace's question, she looked up from her tablet. 'Hanging out' was certainly a choice to describe what they were doing, though she didn't quite agree with that particular word choice. But if that's what he thought, then far be it from her to correct him about it, especially since he was still going along with her and wasn't giving her any trouble about it.
"Yes, Dr. Grace. I eat. I wouldn't be here if I didn't."
Eva delivers her response with a flat affect. It's quick. it's casual. And also very awkward. She's not any good at jokes, after all. But Grace's question was odd. Something she'd mentally note for later.
Honestly, she couldn't remember the last time she sat down for a meal and could just focus on the meal. Ever since she was given her title as Head of the Petrova Task Force, and then Chair of Project Hail Mary, and then the powers vested in her by the governments of the world, there was always something to be done. Something to be thought about. Contingency plans to be made.
It didn't help as well that ever since she was given this newfound authority, Governments tried to wine and dine for her favor. Something she didn't see a point in doing - her job was solving the issue of the dying Sun and the Petrova Line, and allowing humanity and Earth to survive. Nothing they did could change that. Plus, when she worked for the government, doing things like that would be cause for termination - ethics and all. So she often declined those types of invitations, preferring her meetings with officials to be short and to the point, if possible.
She'd eat later, usually something small, as she read through the stacks of reports on her tablet or the requisition reports on her desk.
Eva Stratt took a few more sips of her coffee. She looked at the tablet in her hands, and then back up to Dr. Grace.
"What are your thoughts on the ideas proposed for the centrifuge mechanism on the Hail Mary?"
One thing I really like about movie!Stratt is her leadership style. Which, I think, is pretty distinct from her book counterpart.
Because, basically, I'm not sure I find it realistic that a woman (or man) appointed to this role would last long if she was terribly abrasive or confrontational. It would be counterproductive and distracting for everyone involved. (It serves a purpose in the book, but I prefer how the movie did it.)
Movie!Stratt creates the appearance of being very consensus-oriented. She doesn't even acknowledge the concept of power games or sexism for that matter. Authority doesn't live in confrontation or visible status markers but in the visible support and deference of everyone around her, because she made sure they are all pulling in the same direction to begin with.
She's absolutely has a lot of power but she's keeping it understated. Nothing flashy. Business casual, always moving, flat shoes, calm voice, always questions, honest answers. She's consulting the room (while leading the conversation), she is to the point but reasonably polite, she works in tandem with others, creates a sense of shared experience. "Applause!" Carl knows exactly when to jump into the conversation while deferring to her authority, "Talk to her", "Just answer the question", "I would take the three". He clearly really knows her and can pick up his end of that game. The "We don't know" chorus. The "What's the alternative" centrifuge discussion. "Thank you so much" to the underling with the coffees. Seemingly flat hierarchies.
She lets people talk and then gleans what she needs. She gives credit.
Her job is to make the decisions and take responsibility, to keep the momentum going. People are unsurprisingly okay with handing it off. She points, they march.
No one considers opposing her because they all trust her. Because they feel involved in the process. It's not hard to ask, after all, when everyone knows what it's for.
Even in the end, she has the entire team on her side when confronting Grace with his choice. Because none of it is about power or ego. Only about the mission.
The lack of future international cooperation gets her most emotional utterance out of the entire film. "Which they won't."
At every point she is pulling for a team effort. And it works. (Except one time.)
I just thought that was really well done.
