@peurdelune-blog
@peurdelune
so @peurdelune and i were talking about how (modern) sirius and james probably have an instagram account where they just post pictures of remus + remus things, call him a cryptid, and act like itâs for some documentary. thereâs also a youtube account but it mostly consists of 15 second videos of remus frowning at the camera while james/sirius/both scream and run off (blair witch style)

snufflesmajor:
As Remus spoke, Sirius tried very hard to listen. He tried so hard to listen, in fact, that the sheer level of focus seemed to be heating up his entire body. He wanted very much to move or rub his face or something, but found it impossible to do any of that.Â
What with all the focusing and concentrating.
It wasnât embarrassing or flustering, hearing Remus say⌠words. No, no and he supposed he very much wouldnât like it if Remus said those words to him. He wouldnât. At all. Not even a little, actually. In fact, he found the mere idea of it repugnant. Heâd write three letters to the Prophet about it just as soon as he remembered how to move and think and breatheâwhich he was only struggling with because of the effort.
  Serious business, all this concentrating.
At some point, Remus had stopped talking. This, Sirius knew, was the right time for him to say something. They were about to have another argument, so he knew it had to be somethingâsomething to stop that. Trouble was, he couldnât quite remember why he was upset.
Remus had said something, but⌠but then heâd said something.
So, Sirius cleared his throat. He did such a good job of it, he cleared it again. Then a third time, because he really was good at throat clearing and why shouldnât he show off?
âN-Not at all.â A fourth time, because heâd earned it. Wait, had Remus said something else? After⌠the thing? He had that look like he had, and Sirius suddenly felt very torn about getting in trouble for not listening when heâd clearly been focused. âLike it? NoâŚ. hm? I, uh⌠wasnât going to shake it, wasâŚâ This must have been what Remus had talked about. Hand movements. âHold it, butâbut thatâs⌠not at allâŚâ
A strange, heavy sort of feeling had settled over them, the type of electrical charge felt in the air just before the skies opened up and thunder struck. There was a dangerous sort of feeling to it, and yet there was something magnetic, fascinating, almost exciting--yet not in the ways Remus might have preferred. It was the type of feeling that often went hand in hand with butterflies, his nerves twisted into a knot of dread that settled in the pit of his stomach.
Why did Sirius always make him feel like this? Like he was experiencing everything all at once and yet nothing at all because he simply couldnât name it. They were meant to be arguing over something foolish, werenât they? Or at least doing something with proper labels. But instead they were stuck in some sort of bizarre otherworld and all the confidence Remus had felt before seemed to worry away to nothing.
When no words immediately came to him Remus cleared his throat, as though hoping to unlodge whatever had suddenly swallowed up his voice. Was it the look on Siriusâ face that had gotten to him, ultimately? Or the way his words were stammered, unsure, sort of...just really sweet? Why couldnât he just do this kind of thing normally? He always thought about things too much...
But then again...maybe Remus did too...
A long time passed in which Remus did nothing but watch Sirius and ignore the uncomfortable pounding of his own heart. There was no reason for him to feel so odd, none at all. This was all very normal when looked at it from an outsiderâs point of view; two people with feelings for each other, trying to understand and make things work. Romance wasnât such an unusual thing, and they both knew the things you were supposed to do.
So why wasnât it easier? It should be easier.
   It could be.
He didnât need words; not really. And he didnât need to think either, though the way his stomach gave a nasty somersault every now and then might have had a thing or two to say about that. Feeling slightly unsure and perhaps a little bit shaky, Remus reached out to take Siriusâ hands in his own, to stop their movement and pull him just a little bit closer, enough so that when Remus rocked forward onto his toes he could press their lips together. Â
Because Sirius wanted that, didnât he? That was what this had all been about. A kiss. Just a kiss. Â
And a lot of unsaid words with feelings that didnât have any names.
Obviously, Remus knew nothing about anything. Sirius huffed in a rather dignifying way, then turned and left. Only to return a second later--"I'll see if I can fit her into my appointment book."--smile a bit too broadly for such a remark, then take off down the halls again.
Though Sirius was already off (with whatever grand idea had taken him), Remus didnât hesitate to call after him.
âYou havenât even got any appointments yet, youâll be fine!â
"WHAT?" What. "WHAT IF SHE STEALS MY HEART AND PUTS IT IN BREAD OR SOMETHING? I don't think I've ever seen her eat human food, you know. All that--that protoprintersizing." Remus was lucky to have Sirius around to teach him muggle things. "You don't think she wants to--to, you know." He made a gesture that looked vaguely like a trumpet, but turned into something resembling a violin. He wasn't even sure what it meant. "I think it's a prank. A plot." Something. "I should investigate."
Remus knew Sirius well enough to know there was really no point in asking what he meant--about any of it. Sirius probably had no clue himself, and was just stalling for time, hoping some magical answer came his way. Well, it would be rude not to offer sound advice, wouldnât it?
Calmly, Remus picked up his mug of tea, taking a casual sip.  âOh, I daresay she does. But...are you ready for that kind of commitment? Can you even play the violin?â
"MOONYDORCASWANTSTOBEMYVALENTINEANDSHE'SUPTOSOMETHINGANDYOUKNOWILOVEAGOODPLOTWHATDOYOUTHINK"
Without missing a beat (or even looking up at Sirius) Remus answered.  âSheâs quite nice, I think. You should say yes, youâll make a lovely couple.â
snufflesmajor:
âAppointment?!â Sirius scoffed. âRegister?!â
Sometimes he really had no idea what to think when it came to Remus Lupin. He always acted like he never knew what Sirius was saying, which made no sense given the amount of books he insisted on reading. Unless, of course, they were dictionaries. Sirius had never paid too much attention to what Remus read (a filthy lie, but his current line of thought demanded such a thing to be said), so it was possible they were dictionaries. Or those other onesâthesauruses.Â
Regardless, Remus Lupin was downright offensive. And without provocation!
With unnecessary theatricality, Sirius looked around them. âDo you see anyone around here? Thereâs no line for me. And if I recall correctlyâwhich I doâI specifically used your name. I donât even have an appointment book.â
What sort of a person did Remus think Sirius was? Heâd never even been on a dateâexcept with Prongs, but that hardly counted. Peter was there, andâcome to think of itâso was Remus.
âI suppose this is projection. Youâve been running off to snog appointees whenever you have the chance, then?â Sirius scoffed again, then pulled a rather uncertain face. Remus wasnât, was he? Heâd say something surely.Â
He craned his neck to see if he could find a book-shaped bulge in Remusâ pocket, but his robes were in the way. With a very large sigh, he rubbed his forehead and closed his eyes. âMaybe Iâm the idiot then. Youâll forget about it, wonât you? Was just a bit of a joke.â
Funny how he didnât see this all coming. He always expected a storm, and yet he was woefully unprepared for the type every single time. But rather than get angry with Sirius or even with himself, he took a slow, centering sort of breath and kept his voice as calm and even as if they were only just discussing their homework.
âThatâs not what I meant, Sirius. Maybe you honestly donât know, or youâve gotten into your own head or something, but thatâs not how you go about being...well, romantic.â  If there was a hint of disappointment in his voice he was doing his best not to acknowledge it.  âWould you be all right with that? Me, coming up to you, very formal and stiff and saying ânow this is whatâs going to happen, Iâm going to kiss you, youâll shake my hand, and thatâll be doneâ? I wasnât saying youâve got loads of people lined up to snog you, nor have I got any--and thank goodness for that. All I meant was that it felt so awkward and cold that I might as well have begun filling out my paperwork to make it official.â
There was only a brief pause before he regretted his choice of words, groaning internally. The very last thing he wanted to do was send Sirius spiraling over the edge, but the harder he tried to pull him back the more Sirius pulled away. Would it be too much for them to handle things like adults?
   Or at least mature teenagers.
âDonât--donât go taking this all the wrong way. Look...you know how I feel about you, right? Youâd better, at least. But it just...itâs gotta mean something. You canât overthink these sorts of things...or...or itâs just...I donât know. A bit wrong.â
snufflesmajor:
@peurdelune just missed the OPPORTUNITY of a LIFETIME
âWhat?â What?
  What?
  What?
  Oh. Oh.
   âOh.â Sirius said. âOh.â
  Oh.
âUhâŚâ A brilliant start. âI haveâŚâ
No, no, Sirius thought, donât trail off, that sounds like you have.
âNO ITâS JUST A JOKE, REMUS.â Fantastic cover. Even Dumbles would buy it. âGOTTA LAUGH SOMETIMES.â
Sirius took a step backward and subtly checked how his breath smelled.
Fine. Little minty, little chocolatey, little⌠breathy.
âBut no rubbish.â He added. Just in case. âWhy? Have you?â
Sometimes he really had no idea what to think when it came to Sirius Black. Half the things he said sounded like they were meant to be true and were nothing more than a ridiculous lie, and yet the rest of what he said was so ludicrous it couldnât be anything but the truth. But there was always a gray area, an area that more often than not startled Remus and left him feeling more confused than ever.
It wasnât that he meant to be rude, or laugh or scoff--sometimes Remus just couldnât help the way he reacted. But to be fair, Sirius never came to him with any normal sort of ideas. How was he meant to react like a person when Sirius bounded over to him spouting whatever nonsensical words popped into his head?
â--No, it wasnât. Iâm not actually an idiot, you know. But have you ever heard the things you say to me? They range from absolutely off the wall to weirdly...mechanical. I mean, how romantic was that just now? Honestly? Should I make an appointment? Fill out a register? It just...â He trailed off with a soft, exasperated sort of sigh.  âNo, sorry. That wasnât very...very nice, was it? Sorry.â
For a few seconds he considered saying more, but seemed to realize pushing his luck would only make Sirius feel worse. His body relaxed, having grown tense without him even noticing, and though he watched Sirius with apologetic eyes he said nothing else. Letting Sirius get a few words in would probably ease things a bit.
   Probably.
"Right, Moony, I'm going to need you to stop mooning over me for a moment, because we're going to snog. I've practiced, right, so it's all good to go. I'll hold your hand through all of it, so no need to be afraid." Sirius wasn't. At all. Everything was fine? Totally fine. "Do you need a bit of a sit down after hearing that? Come on, you're in Gryffindor. Let's hop to it."
â--Have you been eating rubbish again?â
snufflesmajor:
Looking at Remus was hard, but Sirius dug deep and found the courage to do it anyway. There was just enough light to see the expression on his face, and Sirius suddenly felt self conscious. Had he reacted the wrong way? Was he⌠meant to do something else?
âItâsâŚâ He flapped his hands the same way he had earlier. Words were difficult, so he hoped his grin could be heard if nothing else. âItâs bloody brilliant, Moony.â
He took another two steps into the room, head slowly moving around as he tried to take the scene in properly. It must have taken an age to get the fires going properly, and another age to get them to stay contained. With no many, Remus must have been nearly run off his feet.Â
âI thought you were dragging me in just so we couldâuh, well, you really got me.â He looked back at Remus and smiled at him wide. âItâs⌠Itâs great. And your Mum does this? Merlin, sheâs a clever muggle, isnât she? Not even magic can say no to her.â
âThanks, Remus.â One last step closer, and Sirius pressed the back of his hand against Remusâ (just in case he really didnât like doing that). âYouâre going to have to do this every year now, even when weâre old men.â
The praise might have been enough to chase his anxieties away on a normal day, but he only felt more and more nervous as time went by.  His face felt as though it were going to actually burst into flames, but despite it all he felt himself smiling.
Sirius liked it.  Not only that, but he liked it enough to want to do it year after year, and Remus knew that they werenât just empty words to placate him.  As worried as he had been, the honesty did manage to boost his courage.
âItâs sort of funny you said that, actually...â
Still avoiding Siriusâ gaze, Remus began to reach carefully into his pocket, pausing only when he felt the otherâs hand brush against his own.  Surprised, he glanced up at Sirius, quickly forcing an awkward smile to hide his reaction.Â
âI need to give you your present.  See, this is why I needed a hand...â
Somehow Sirius had picked up on at least part of what Remus wanted.  He had initially thought he was being clever, but he often realized that he shouldnât underestimate Sirius--he had an uncanny knack for figuring things out.
Reaching back into his pocket, Remus withdrew something small and without giving himself time to think, he reached out and took Siriusâ hand, placing a small daisy ring in his palm.
âI mean...itâs only fair that you have one too, right?â
snufflesmajor:
   âOh.â
Sirius looked at his hands with a strange expression. It looked almost as if he were frowning, and while he was, he wasnât frowning at Remus. No, he was frowning at himself.
Though he might have been standing completely still, a violent and bloody war was raging inside him. Several embarrassing noises were trying their hardest to escape his lips, and his stomach suddenly felt all bubbly and floaty. His face must have been flushed red, but the skin of his face was too numb to tell.Â
Remus wasnât pretending to want to hold his hand then not; he was trying to get Sirius alone to hold hands. He wanted to hold hands in private. Which meant⌠were they going to link fingers? Hold both hands? Remus had said he only needed one hand, but Sirius would try to hold both. Probably. It would be fine.Â
It all made sense suddenly. Neither of them felt very comfortable being girly in front of other people, so Remus must have pulled Sirius aside so they could. They could sit a bit closer and talk about their day, and if Remusâ hair was in his face then Sirius could look at it without getting caught (one day he might even be able to move it for him, but he didnât want to rush things).Â
As the embarrassment and indignation had been driven away by pounding of his heart, Sirius found he felt light. And realised heâd been standing outside the classroom for too long. He pushed forward into the classroom with a pitchy âMoony,â but found himself stuck once again.
âWhatâsâŚâ Lightsâbeautiful, brilliant lightsâwere everywhere. The air felt thicker as he glanced around the room. suddenly feeling ten years younger and three feet shorter. It wasâhad Remus? Oh Merlin, he couldnât look at him. âIs this⌠was this you?â
God, Remus couldnât stand it.  The pressure was intense, and for a few seconds he felt as though he had made a mistake.  Sirius would think it was stupid, or childish, or just...
What if he didnât like it?
   What if he hated it?
More than once he began to speak, only to find that his voice wouldnât cooperate.  During the planning stages it had all sounded like a good idea, and he couldnât just let Siriusâ birthday go ignored.Â
--Why couldnât he just be normal?
After a while he couldnât very well stay silent any longer.  Clearing his throat, he forced his words out.  âWell, itâs not what I would have done normally, but...w-well I sort of wanted to do it like Mum--I-I guess.  I just wanted to do something nice for you...on your birthday.â
He paused awkwardly, wishing he had something a little more impressive to say other than adding: âHappy birthday, Sirius.â
snufflesmajor:
Well, that was just great, wasnât it? Remus was upset.Â
Heâd seen right through Sirius and, despite everything, was upset that Sirius had wanted to hold his hand. If he didnât want to hold hands, then he should have shoved his hands in his pockets. But he didnât, he just kept them out and hanging around and it was all too much of a tease. Remus was trying to torment Sirius.
Maybe that wasnât all that realisticâRemus was good, kind, and sweet; heâd never do anything to deliberately humiliate Siriusâbut it was the only explanation.Â
  It was not on.
âWaitâhold it!â It was a poor choice of words, and Sirius felt his ears heat up. Remus would think he was demanding to have his hand held, and while he hadnât been initially⌠it was too late to back out now.Â
  Sirius stuck out his hand.Â
âYouâve dug your own hole, Moony. You canât justââ Sirius flapped both hands, ââand expect me toâto not; itâs unreasonable! What would you tell Prongs if Evans did it, huh? So⌠so youâre going to do it. If you didnât want to then you shouldnât haveâyou could say you donât but this is all veryâRemus, you git. If you arenât going to then say it, but donât get all funny about it just because I try to! I wonât be insulted like this, itâs inhumane!â
He was sure at least part of that made sense, and if it hadnât⌠Remus was a smart man; heâd get it.
Just in case, he stuck out both handsâjust to give Remus a choice.
What on earth was going on now?
The more Sirius spoke, the less Remus understood, and for several awkward moments he wasnât at all sure what to do.  He looked from Siriusâ face to the flapping hand as though it were some bizarre appendage he had yet to be made aware of, and when both hands were suddenly thrust out he had to fight the odd urge to burst into near hysterical laughter. Â
Why did this always happen to them?
Swallowing the urge, he forced his expression into what he hoped was something neutral and shook his head.  âI only need one, Sirius.  I told you that.  Just...j-just come in here, wonât you?  I donât want to stay out here in the corridor where anyone--I mean--oh stop acting like a child.  Youâre too old for that.  Officially.â
Feeling as though he had made perfect sense, he turned on his heel and pushed open the door to the classroom, letting out a soft, silvery light from within.  It was a pure, soft sort of light, the type of light that had an almost shimmering quality to it that neither firelight nor electricity would manage to produce on its own, and, thankfully, it didnât highlight the pinkness of Remusâ face.
Several jars of bluebell flames sat scattered around the room, casting their ethereal light on the strings of small, iridescent silver bubbles that now lined the room.  Of course Remus would have quite liked a few strands of Muggle fairy lights, but as those were not an option (and wizard fairy lights much more difficult) he had had to improvise.  At least it was better than streamers and paper signs.
   He hoped.
snufflesmajor:
Perhaps it had only been his imagination, but Sirius had been sure Remus had been about to hold his hand. He hadnât though, not at all, and it was probably stupid to think he would have. Very out of character, it would have been. Not⌠not something that would have happened, and clearly only imagined by Sirius.
Dreamed up. Something conjured out of desperation.
To hold Remusâ hand? All right, maybe not. It was better not to go down that rabbit hole (Sirius mentally patted himself on the back for using a muggle term). Remus had obviously wanted to move past, or something. It made sense since he moved awfully quickly.
Very quickly, actually. In fact, Sirius felt he might actually lose sight of him should he not be careful. So it wouldnât be that odd to hold Remusâ hand. So they werenât parted. Which would be terrible as Sirius needed to assist Remus in something. And Remus had mentioned something about needing a hand.
He reached out slowly, fingers stretching toward Remusâ hand (which was just dangling there, and if he wasnât asking for it then, wellâwell he definitely was), when Remus turned back to him. And said⌠something.
Sirius looked at Remusâface, then at his hand, then at his own handâwhich he dropped nearly immediately. âSorry, what?â
Remus stared back at Sirius for a moment, an odd look playing across his face.  Part of him felt as though he ought to be insulted that Sirius hadnât been paying attention to him, but the other part began to wonder as to why Sirius hadnât been listening.  Was he just joking around and being stupid?  Or had his mind been elsewhere?
Well that was just perfect.  Sirius didnât even seem interested, so they were off to a brilliant start.  He would probably end up laughing in Remusâ face before the evening was through.  Why couldnât he have just gone the normal route, said âHappy Birthdayâ and handed him something from Honeydukes?
Another moment passed, and finally Remus shook his head as though he were coming out of a trance.  âNothing, sorry.  Er...just over hereâs fine, really.  In this classroom...â
Thereâs still time, he thought.  If he backed out now he could make up some stupid excuse and Sirius would never know the difference. Â
@snufflesmajor is definitely not getting into the Prefectsâ bathroom
There was great effort not to roll his eyes, and an even greater effort to keep his voice level as he replied.  âI donât need both of them...just one.â
For a moment he seemed to struggle with a decision, making a move toward Sirius as though to take his hand, but evidently thought better of it. Looking determinedly away from Siriusâ face, he slipped out through the portrait hole, making sure his sudden flush of color wasnât noticeable.
Thankfully his voice didnât sound peculiarly high-pitched despite his sudden exit, though as he glanced back to check that Sirius was with him he felt an odd sort of jolt that he hoped didnât show itself on his features.  Why did he still have to be so nervous?  Why couldnât he act like a normal person instead of a big, warm mess?
âWeâre not going to the Prefectsâ bathroom, Sirius,â he explained, attempting to sound as exasperated as ever.  âWhy would we?  Do you think you deserve something special today or something?â
Keep Me Warm In This October Night
Fandom: Harry Potter Characters:Â Remus Lupin, Sirius Black, James Potter, Peter Pettigrew, Lily Evans Pairings: Sirius/Remus, James/Lily Summary: October had always been one of Remusâ favorite months. The sky never seemed to be able to make up its mind, turning from a pale. cloudless blue to stormy, churning gray in a matter of minutes. On colder nights and mornings, a gentle, silvery mist clung to the ground, which, coupled with the blazing reds and oranges of many of the Hogwarts trees, gave the dazzling impression of a large, cozy fire. Even the seemingly ever-present chill could not put a damper on the way he felt. Instead of bemoaning the onset of an early winter, Remus was the type of person who delighted in layering on warm, comfortable clothing and did not at all seem to mind the constant commentary regarding his (rather well-worn) jumpers. Happy birthday @itsnotloveifitsjust !!! Â Love you ! <3
