“I had the week that came from hell and yes, I know that you could tell. But you’re like the net under the ledge, when I go flying off the edge, you go flying off as well.”
[TW: Physical abuse, sexual abuse]
Growing up in New York City, New York, Peyton James was born into a troubled family, but you would of never known. Walking down the streets of New York, she always had a smile on her face and helped as many people as she could. Being the eldest of three, she always had her eyes on her younger brother and sister. By the age of 10, she grew to have a huge protective feeling over them. If anyone came close to touching them, she would be in front of them in seconds. Her love for them was strong and she loved her mother the same, but her father was another story.
Starting at the age of 13, Peyton was being molested and raped by her father. This lasted for four years. Her sister, brother, and mother were all being abused by her father. During these four years, her father made her do things she wasn’t ready to do. Doing these horrid things to her father made her think this was normal and every family had this same situation going on. Her father hit her mother, sister, and brother while she was his sex toy. While this was all happening, she and her siblings and were going to school and getting a good education. School was her seven hours of freedom. She hated leaving school, her teachers, friends, and teammates.
At the age of seventeen and almost done with her sophomore year of high school, Peyton couldn’t handle being beaten anymore. She wanted to tell her best friend about her situation, but her father knew her best friend’s dad was a police officer. He demanded she’d never see her best friend again. After a few weeks, she told her best friend what was happening at home and her best friend learned that her situation wasn’t normal and she wasn’t safe. It had to be stopped. She joined a local child advocacy center and they helped her. In the matter of days, her father was arrested and it took her three trials until he was put in prison.
Now a senior in high school, Peyton decided to speak in front of all her classmates and tell them about her powerful story. When this happened, it felt like her community gave her a huge hug. All the support overwhelmed her and she finally felt free. Her mother was divorced from her father, her brother and sister were safe, and they were to never see their biological father ever again. Graduating from high school, she was on the honor roll and was elected as the valedictorian. She told her story in front of 6,000 people and knew she wanted to be a public speaker for all ears.
Attending a community college, Peyton majored in communications. Two years later, she got a full-ride to the University of Washington and became a certified public speaker. At the age of 22, she graduated with her bachelors degree and her proud family by her side. Traveling around the country, she told her story to millions of people and thousands of high schools. She was an icon and a role model to many teenagers struggling with her same situation. Wanting to settle down somewhere new, she moved to Frey, Maine. Now age 27, she’s been living in Frey, Maine in Harbor Point for a month and is settling in very well.
