a translation from greek on the occasion of seeing artemis
to Reid Wiseman and Victor Glover and Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen
Much is awful, but not much more awful than man, over the grey sea with the stormdriven southwest wind, withdrawing beyond the selfswallowing swollen waves. This eldest god, Earth the deathless, tireless man grinds down back and forth with the plow year after year overthrowing her with the sons of mules. Man carries home lassoed the lightminded race of birds and the nomad nations of beasts and the submarine nature of the sea coiled in meshwoven nets, this devious man. Man entraps the meadowliving cliffroaming goat and the shaggymaned horse man battens with a yoke athwart the neck and the tireless mountain ox. And voice and squalling spirit and cityordering passion man teaches to man, and to evade hostile frost in the open and the storm's skybolts. Man flows through every channel. Never without an exit, man tunnels into the future. Out of Hades alone there is no manhole, but away from inexplicable pestilence man finds flight paths.
