The sounds of Tron-

Something that is often looked over is the fact that Tron not only has a connection with early computing but with early gaming as well. Not just because one of the characters makes games and runs a arcade, video games are absolutely integral to the world. In fact they make up a good portion of how the system looks and functions!

For example most of the transport, ships, and weapons we see come from video games, mainly Flynn’s but extends into encoms catalog. In the vernacular it’s common to mention it as well “video game warriors” “Gonna make you play video games” “video game simulation” etc. but you didn’t need me to tell you this.

The way video games impacted and shaped the digital world of Tron absolutely plays a hand in how seamless it translates into the two tie in Arcade cabinets. Though heavy on the grid bugs they’re beautifully decorated and similar to the games as we see them on screen/would translate in real life. The music stings come straight from Wendy Carlos’s work for the film, to the extent the game contains the entirety of Anthem. [Listen]

Sound cue’s and combat-

Part of what makes the sound and style of the game so accurate to the movie is the sound design. Like in old games there is a sound for everything. Every movement has its own sound, it sounds silly as things in real life also have noise but if you’ve ever played any retro game you know what I’m talking about.

One of the best examples of this is when Flynn is tossed into the cell and stumbles around, there’s a metallic echo to his footsteps. In combat it’s the same thing —very distinct sounds to go with every action. A lot of what older games are is pattern recognition- both visual and audio, certain music loops or sound cues help you get better at the game. Another good example is Tron casting his disc, blocking throws etc- if you know what a disc sounds like you can better dodge etc. I also like how they have almost a ceramic sound when Ram plays with his.

Nothing is more video game than De-resolution itself! The death cry and slowly breaking into bits before getting reabsorbed. You can hear the noise off screen and know what happened, game over.

Apart from video game comparisons I do have such a genuine love for the sound design of the film and how much it fleshes out the world. The blips and bloops of energy flowing through the system. The sounds of a working computer. There’s a dial up esc noise when Flynn is beamed in and judging by the guards reactions it’s not different from a how a regular program would enter/travel between systems. Programs get to make funky little computer noises in my heart 💕(another inhuman attribute I think they deserve, they’re like us in so many ways but then… aren’t.)

I know it’s probably just because it’s older recording equipment but occasionally programs will get a grainy feedback/radio style grain to their voice. I’d like to think it’s intentional- especially considering Legacy does this too (going so far for it to be what some sound like all the time)

The way sound is utilized in the movie is a incredibly underrated aspect of what makes the movie so good.

"This ride made me absolutely terrified of elevators for a bit. xD Anyway, the bellhop cast members are hilarious. The hotel that is covered in cobwebs and was clearly abandoned in a rush after a terrible event is so cool. The Rod Sterling Twilight Zone intro is iconic. The basement is an interesting setting for the final part of the queue. The generators, lights, and floor indicator malfunctioning helps build your anticipation. The friggin elevator moving into the hallway and into a new shaft when the electrical ghosts make their appearance and you enter the Twilight Zone is so impressive. The dropping and rising of the elevator is such fun and I love the randomized events they added. I have to say, though, that ventriloquist dummy in the unloading room still makes me uncomfortable."

AITA for not being sad my dad died?

I (20's, F) is set to be wed to my fiancé (20's, M) but he hasn't shown up yet and I'm wondering how much is my fault. Several years ago, I met my fiancé. He was not of the same social station as myself, and my father was not happy about it. Well, he was always trying to marry someone "of my station" and "He won't let his little girl throw her life and his reputation away" and "He didn't found this town for me to marry someone like that." He never got along with my mother (they fought a lot and I'm pretty sure he was having an affair with our maid who was ALSO married) so when the earthquake came that ended up killing him and my mother I wasn't that upset. I was sad at the rest of the town dying - and destroying the mines that were the town's main income - but at least I would be free to marry my fiancee and leave this town. It doesn't need the founder's daughter to run it. I think it's stable enough it wouldn't die. Or if it does die, it may be more due to the ghosts that are haunting it after the earthquake. But now it's the day of my wedding and my fiancé hasn't shown up . Now I'm wondering if I've been too callous? Maybe the town itself is mad at me? Or maybe just the ghost I keep seeing, lurking. I feel like that ghost will dig my grave. I just don't know.

Dr. Nikola Tesla did not sign bad contracts. He signed an excellent contract with Westinghouse to bring AC power to America. Westinghouse was the big competitor against Edison Electric, which ran DC power. Thomas Edison was a massive prick and Edison Electric went around doing its best to convince everyone that AC power was dangerous, most infamously by electrocuting an elephant to death and developing the first execution-style electric chair using AC power. All of this cemented in the mind of the public that AC power was dangerous and deadly, while DC power was somehow safer.

By 1890, Westinghouse was in trouble. George Westinghouse went to Tesla and laid out the truth: if he honored the royalty contracts that he’d agreed to pay Tesla, he would go bankrupt. So Tesla tore up the contracts. He walked away from millions, maybe billions of dollars because he believed that wireless electricity should be free to the world. Westinghouse went on to bring AC power to homes across America.

Tesla wasn’t a bad businessman. He was an idealist who hated capitalism.

If you know me, you know how much I LOVE the 1.0 version of this ride and I really can't wait for you all to read it. SO please pre order if you can. And here’s the fandom I’ve been in the longest and the one I’ve made practically no content for XD! What do they call it these days? The ‘Disney Park Lore Fandom’? Who knows!

This said, I love this ride so very very much and I’m so glad those smart fuckers at Disneyland Paris are finally capitalizing on it with face characters and merchandise.

Not sure how I feel about the updated story of the ride since I haven’t got a chance to see it in person yet (In fact, I was supposed to go to DLP last month and had to cancel my reservation :<) but I’ve always had my own weird headcanons when it comes to the plot of this attraction so it doesn’t really matter to me XD

Since Worst Dad Ever™ Henry Ravenswood was confirmed to be the Phantom in the ride, I’ve also heard people saying he is the face character (that the fandom dubbed ‘glitter phantom’ as far as I’m aware XD) that appears in parades but mmmh… does that mean that the Phantom and the Ghost Host are the same character? I always assumed it wasn’t the case and I’ve had this funny little headcanon for a while now: what if the Thunderbird possessed the body of Melanie’s last fiancee?

Good old Henry can still be the Phantom and be a dick, but his lovely daughter is now dating a dapper and OP nature spirit and there’s nothing he can do about it :P Karmic justice!
