First and foremost, I would like to thank our English 2 professor, Ms. Carla Vee Ababbon for updating our class in the news events and giving triviaās of what is happening in the outside world, because to tell you frankly, we donāt have televisions in our dormitories. Fortunately, Maāam Ababbon has been giving pop quizzes concerning new reports and information that are roaming in the whole world recently. So now, I will share some of my knowledge and give some thoughts regarding Global issues.
I donāt know if you guys are aware of the most popular virus that currently spreading in United States of America especially in Brazil, the Zika virus. When I first heard it, I was shocked. It was near impossible. Imagine, because of a bite of an infected Aedes mosquito, an innocent baby can lead to birth defects, called Microcephaly; a disease in which new-borne babies abnormally formed small heads and small brains.
I thought that this virus was just recently observed, but according to my research, it was isolated for the first time on 1947 in the Zika forest in Uganda, it was originated in Africa and now expanding to different places like Easter Island, where the virus continued to be detected until June 2014. Last May 2015, the public health officials of Brazil declared that the transmission of Zika virus was spreading in the northeast of the country.
Zika is a serious illness. It is a member of the Flavivirdae family and is transmitted to humans by mosquito. It is almost the same with Dengue and Chikugunya, in which all of them shows similarities in symptoms like headache, high fever, skin rashes, and sometimes conjunctivitis.
The said disease was declared as an international emergency, and the doctors and scientists are busy finding a cure for this epidemic illness. They have been searching for the reason why most of the countries with Zika produces birth defects in babies, called Microcephaly, while in others are only few. Drug maker Sanofi Pasteur gives full effort for the Zika vaccine to happen.
El Salvador, one of the countries with some victims of the virus, encourages the woman to at least hold back on having children until 2018 as much as possible. One viral joke came from them was āInstead of using a condom, use a mosquito net! That should at least keep the mosquitoes from biting your privates.ā This sounds funny and offensive at the same time. I pity those who have been affected by Zika, so please at least donāt make fun of them.
I also read one super offensive suggestion of preventing the circulating of Zika. It was said that pregnant women with the virus should take abortion as an option or solution for decreasing the numbers of people with the disease and prevention of having a baby with small heads. Like, seriously? Yes they have prevented the spreading of the disease, but they killed babies with an innocent mind, to think it is not their fault to be unfortunate being one of the few people that bears the effect of Zika. Unbelievable and unkind people, tsk.
There are two factors why rapid transmission of the virus is happening according to PAHO (Pan American Health Organization); first, since this is a new virus to Americas, the entire population is susceptible, lacking defenses to Zika virus, second, the Aedes mosquito is widespread in the Region, given the climatic conditions temperature, and humidity in tropical countries.
The main target of this disease are those pregnant women. So as an advice to you, not only to preggy mom but all of you who are wasting your precious time reading my blog, please do take care of yourselves, our life is a gift of God so might as well love and protect it just how He loves and protects us. According our health care professionals, avoid allowing standing water in the outdoors like flower pots and bottle, also cover domestic water tanks so that those evil mosquitos cannot get it. Avoid accumulating garbage, use screen and mosquito nets and please keep your surroundings clean, because one of the main reasons if you will going to have the virus is because you lack care for yourself.
To those who have virus, please always pray and donāt let any diseases destroy you. Remember, you are human with a God who will do everything to make you a better person and has better plans for you; also your family and friends who will not leave you. Remember, they (Zika) are wicked. KEEP FIGHTING!!
Lastly, to those scientists and researchers who give all their time and knowledge in this, I know all of you are really doing your best to find a cure for this, but please make it fast because the longer it can be, the more people will be destroyed by the virus. I challenge, all the medical professionals out there, to be a hero and assure all of us to not lose hope, because you are near to completion. *winks*
