Sometimes it is very clear that a writer does not how (f)MRI works, or how human subjects consent works, and that really wasn't the point of this particular piece of fiction, but it sure is making it hard to enjoy
Mostly I like where I live, but occasionally people feel a need to show off their speakers when stopped at the gas station, and someone just went by with a subwoofer powerful enough to shake all of my windows like that annoying action movie sound effect
if they're gonna remake The Princess Bride, it should open with a kid sick in bed scrolling on his phone. his grandpa arrives with a gift--it's a DVD player with a disc already inside. grandpa hooks it up to the TV and presses play. and we all just watch the original 1987 film again.
always funny to remember darth vader is anakin skywalker. the adrenaline junkie chucklefuck who used to dive head first out of speeders and built a pod racer in his yard when he was like six is now upper-middle management for the evil empire. half of his appearances in the original trilogy are Meetings. vader spends like 80% of his time dealing with bureaucratic bullshit. status updates. team meetings. holo-Zooms. budget rundowns. anakin betrayed the jedi and caused the fall of the republic and his punishment is being CC'd on every email forever. and you know what. he would hate that. the punishment fits the criminal
i get a $250 million production budget to adapt beowulf into a summer blockbuster and at the end beowulf is contemplating his reign as king in his old age and the passing of time and we hear some kids say something he doesn't quite understand and he says stoically "it's as if the English i speak is becoming old..."
as a lover of historical fiction and art about women and horny art and silly art i am so so into this premise. everyone can't stop being like "ohh his is dick made of wood too" it's magic dumbass. i am obsessed with how this sounds like an obscure medieval european folk tale. peter dinklage plays a basketmaker with the power to bring life to inanimate objects for an spinste's sexual pleasure. suspend your disbelief about his cock and have a little fun
and the leading lady is played by a woman whose gay man. perfect movie perhaps
for those who haven't seen the trailer.
#I assume his dick is ribbed for her pleasure and well-lacquered#like yes I assume the wicker guy who is ostentatiously 100% wicker everywhere we can see also has a wicker dick#I also assume a basket-making wizard who can make a whole-ass articulated dude out of wicker in one month#while *also* keeping up with his bill-paying day-job baskets#knows how to make a dick where none of the pokery is anywhere near the jiggery#sorry to everyone who's only seen shitty big-box store baskets that are made out of spite and neoliberalism#his dong is wicker and also perfectly fit for purpose#wicker? I hardly knew her! etc.

minutes can happen with any sort of meeting, so the condo context t-rex insisted on supplying is entirely unnecessary. these minutes truly DO feel like hours

Teenage me might be very confused by my current music taste, but on the other hand I'm not sure they'd actually dislike any of it?
I love seeing people gush about Hadestown.
I was once a teenage boy, at a Rufus Wainright concert. I sat there, with my mom and a bunch of gay couples waiting for Rufus, when this skinny little girl in a flower print dress comes out on stage, with her guitar; and in her reedy, insecure voice, she tells us that she’s written a musical. It’s a retelling of a classic Greek myth, she says, voice like a twig; a retelling of Orpheus, set in a kind of Great Depression Mining Town setting.
It was Anaïs Mitchell, creator of Hadestown. The album had only just been pressed; there was no stage production, of yet. It was just a dream, still.
The stage was utterly bare; no backup singers or other instruments, just her and her guitar. She picked it up and performed both sides of the call-and-return of Why We Build The Wall. She sang Our Lady Of The Underground; without any of the confidence or sex that later singers would bring to that song; just her and her tiny, unsteady voice. She sang the Wedding Song, and Flowers; shifting her weight from foot to foot, clearly full of nerves.
I was moved. I’d just spent a year in a classical theater conservatory, and I knew intimately how terrifying it was, to stand in front of a great crowd of strangers with expectations and taste. I wanted to get up on that stage and wrap her in a tremendous hug, and tell her I hoped everything worked out like she dreamed. That wasn’t appropriate to do, though, so I did the less creepy thing and bought one of her CDs. Told her she did good.
I listened to it over and over and over again.
I sang the Wedding Song to girlfriends. I belted Our Lady Of The Underground in the car, to and from work. I played Why We Build The Wall while drinking and reading the news.
It’s been nearly 20 years since that concert. Now Anaïs’s baby has a run on Broadway, or so I hear. There’s a Proshot, and people writing essay-length examinations. There’s analysis.
It warms my heart. I feel like, I dunno, not an uncle, but maybe like a friendly neighbor; excited to see that kid Anaïs take her wacky dream and actually succeed with it; actually make it all the way, and not wash out. It’s beautiful. I love it.
Thanks for making your quirky little musical, Anaïs; wherever you are. Your music has been a delight to me for coming up on 2 decades now, and it truly is so lovely to see so many others also appreciating your work.
Glad it worked out.
How would you describe a dragon to someone who has never seen a dragon?
"Horse but make it a lizard and give it bat wings and horns"
didnt know how to interpret "make it a lizard" so i wrote lizard and drew an arrow pointing to the horse so people know its a lizard. Also didn't know what bat horns were so I gave it a horned bat nose
"A body like a big cat but completely covered in scales, the head of a crocodile with the horns of an ibex, and the wings of a bat on its back"
On it boss o7, ive mashed all these animals together and threw scales all over it. This the dragon you saw?
"Take a lizard, extend the neck. Add a pair of bat wings to the back. Add horns and sharp teeth."
Seems like we're onto somethin' boss! Though idk how it'd be so fearsome bein such a small thing.
"Big-ass lizard with wings" "big lizard" "Giant lizard" "Big fucking lizard"
don't seem too special?
"Imagine a winged alligator that was 70 feet tall and aware of its existence"
i dont know if this is a dragon but it could definitely be some kind of god
"Dinosaur with wings and horns?"
Dunno which dino you were talkin about so i just picked a random one. Stegosauus :}
"Big snake with legs and horns that can breathe fire"
Ah. Hm.
"A dragon is like a tree, in that it's a made up category for a broadly similar type of mythological creature that has no relationship to other dragons, but you know a dragon when you see one the way you know a tree when you see one."
it's a sad song, but we sing it anyway.

Diné Weaver Venancio Aragón
"From researching historic twill patterns in museum collections to dyeing wool with Kool-Aid, Diné (Navajo) weaver and instructor Venancio Aragón interlocks research and experimentation to expand the visual and technical vocabularies of Diné weaving. Working on the Diné upright loom, Aragón is part of a generation of Diné weavers who reinterpret ancestral knowledge through experimentation, carrying the medium forward on their own terms. As he stated in our interview with him, “I am not a purist.”
Based in Farmington, New Mexico, Aragón is trained in cultural anthropology and Native American and Indigenous studies, currently teaching at Diné College, the Navajo Nation’s tribal college. Before transitioning to full-time weaving and teaching, Aragón worked as an interpretive park ranger at the Mesa Verde, Aztec Ruins, Bandelier, and Petroglyph National Monuments, where he led tours and developed public education initiatives. He was born to the Tó’aheedlíinii (The Water Flow Together People) clan and born for the Naakaii (Mexican people). His maternal grandfather is of the Tsénahabiłnii (Sleeping Rock) clan, and his paternal grandfather is of the Naakaii (Mexican people)."
