Heyyo Tea, apologies if you've been asked this already but I'm supposed to be working so I'm typing this from my 11 year old phone and it's hard to search for things.. Where would you recommend someone start if they were interested in mod making? I don't have any ideas, mostly just would like to poke around and learn a new skill or two but no idea where to begin. Can you share some resources or tips? 😊 love seeing the mods you've been sharing lately!
Heyyo Moyokean :)
Ohh ho ho big question.
Start here with these 2 tutorials by @picknmixsims:
- Demystifying the SimPe BHAV Editor
- Unravelling the Spaghetti
PickNMix also has incredible resources on his website about EVERYTHING you need to know regarding BHAVs; stack objects, locals, temps, attributes, params, OIDs, NIDs... just, everything.
In terms of my other tips:
I actually recommend having something in mind you'd like to do. Why did I finally overcome the "learning curve" of BHAV modding and decide to just DO IT? - Because I'd had the idea for "Go Out for Tea" for SO long, I wanted it so badly, I made it happen.
Start small and simple (not like I did, LOL). Resolving mod conflicts would be a great way to start learning to follow the code, see what changes are happening, and work out how and why and when and where things are changing.
If you haven't already experimented with small things like tuning mods with BCONs, re-categorizing objects in SimPE, looking at TTAB (tree tables) and maybe adjusting autonomy, consider meddling with those and following some tutorials for those. The more familiar you are with different parts of a .package file in SimPE, the better
Talk to modders. Ask for help. Get into a Discord and say "I would like to make this mod. Here's what I've got so far. I've done this, this and this. Here's where I am confused" - and go from there. I had the best teachers in William, MorePopcorn and Gummilutt, and it was SO helpful to be able to lean on their knowledge while I learned.
One day - ONE day, I'll make a video about how I learned to mod and why lol.
Have you ever wondered why Bodyshop makes your PC work so hard?
BODYSHOP HAS NO FPS LIMIT
With limited frame rate, Bodyshop only puts a strain on PC when it loads CAS content. If your GPU fans go significantly faster the entire time you have Bodyshop open, then FPS is very likely way too high.
It's similar case for TS2 game - but FPS also depends on your system / PC /Laptop and the way you run TS2.
➤ To check FPS in the game, use a shortcut: Ctrl + Shift + S to bring up FPS HUD. FPS is displayed right in the upper left corner.
Tip: if FPS is changing too fast, take a few screenshots so you can read FPS from those
➤ If you set a limit to 60 FPS, that tells CPU/GPU to produce 60 game frames per second. This is the sensible number for TS2. Without FPS limit, your hardware is trying to put out frames as fast as it possibly can, heating up and using unnecessary amounts of energy.
The Sims 2 engine was not designed to run any higher than 100 FPS
➤ When you play The Sims 2 with TS2 RPC & borderless window, Windows Desktop Manager usually handles frame rates. Same for windowed TS2 Legacy edition. This is thanks to Vsync*, which forces desktop's default refresh rate on game window.
*In case of high-refresh gaming monitors / laptops, FPS limit imposed by Vsync may not be low enough for TS2.
*I showed a screenshot of my hood, but I recommend checking FPS in lot view, because in hood view, 'heavy' particle effects like clouds can dramatically slow down FPS even on a modern gaming GPU.
➤ On older gear, FPS may never go beyond ~70 even without the limit, but CPU / GPU still try hard to reach the unachievable frame rate.
Varying FPS numbers may be an indicator that the game is running uncapped, OR that the default frame rate is set too high for your system to handle.
➤ On modern gaming GPU, you'll have no problem telling the game runs uncapped - FPS in lot view usually oscillates between ~200 - 600.
➤ A few ways to set FPS limit:
Playing a game in windowed mode often solves high FPS issue. Unless you have a monitor with high refresh rate. But the general recommendation for old, uncapped DX9 games is: do not trust WDM, do not rely on Vsync, set a hard FPS limit.
If you use DXVK, you can set FPS cap in the DXVK config file, both for the game, and for Bodyshop (you pick the same 32-bit d3d9 version). *I've explained how I tweaked my DXVK's FPS in this post here.
If you don't use DXVK, and Windows Desktop Manager doesn't affect your game's FPS for some reason, or if you insist on playing fullscreen, you can set FPS limit for TS2 with driver-level GPU settings: Nvidia 3D program profile* / AMD adrenalin. Same applies to Bodyshop.
*Nvidia's global FPS cap may not work in fullscreen mode, often it's required to set FPS limit for TS2 exe specifically.
➤ In case of laptops using "Mux-less" or "Optimus" technology, the integrated Intel/AMD graphics card may be forcing FPS adjusted to screen refresh rate, ignoring Nvidia 3D profile's FPS limiter settings.
If so, you may need to use DXVK with FPS limit, or an external tool like Riva Tuner Statistics Server. RivaTuner apparently can make FPS feel smoother ;) It can be used along DXVK, too (but in that case you set limit with RTSS only, ofc).
TS2 game actually has the option to adjust screen refresh rate, it's in the middle of the graphic options tab. I was told that in the Legacy Edition, the Refresh Rate box is blank and permanently locked, meaning you cannot fix FPS inside the game menu.
I have Mr Dj's repack, and this box was always greyed out for me because I always used FPS cap. When I uncapped FPS, the refresh box became active, game allows me to switch between 59 and 60 mhz refresh options, but these do nothing. FPS stays at 80 for a while, then it goes uncapped.
Some say the Refresh Rate setting is broken in Legacy version, but ,more likely, it got disabled cuz it doesn't work anyway on modern systems.
Also, I need to clarify that TS2 Legacy edition has Vsync, unlike older versions, and it's on by default (so it doesn't rely on WDM to manage window refresh rate).
Did you know sims in this game are supposed to autonomously tease eachother for their bad memories just like how they congratulate their good ones? Unfortunately they broke the teasing feature in a patch at some point.
To be exact, the teasing was broken with Nightlife. It never worked anymore after as the error they introduced was never caught in any patch after that.
A while ago I have released a mod that fixes this as well as issues with the Congratulate interaction where Sims could congratulate each other on bad memories. Here’s the link. Look for “Stupid Congrats and Tease Begone!” :)
For anyone wondering what went wrong: Firstly, Maxis changed the Guardian BHAV in a way where the game would never recognise a memory to be negative because the wrong Temp value got checked.
And secondly, they also reworked a large table with all sorts of constants for each social interaction, likely switched some places around and accidentally gave Tease the “Kiss of the Vampire” values, which of course are all wrong (e.g. leading to Teasing increasing the Attraction Score, or unintentionally locking the interaction from children).
Here’s something I couldn’t upload in time for the previous @gardenofshadowssims bimonthly theme. I understand this might be pointless to most, but hopefully I’m not the only one who appreciates having their cc properly decustomized and organized, without that ugly cc-star.
That’s why I’m sharing my edit of the lovely necklaces that NichelleRJ extracted from Maxis outfits and pinned each one of them to their respective EP/SP. You can see some pics with lovely Maxis ladies wearing them and how neat the necklaces will look in CAS below the cut.
A collection of 6 frames that let you choose between taking an instant photo or picking an image from paintings folder.
This project started when my friend @trofysisters needed frames that could have the same functions as in Sims 4, to have the ability of making gallery walls and especially have photos from important events and vacations. I then combined code from several photos by Lucas from Aussie Topenders, mainly his Customizable Vertical Photo (these are not direct clones) and used meshes and textures from Sims 4. I've already made several picture frames based on his code (2 from here and other 2 from here) but these frames are different.
They let you choose between taking an instant photo (just like the Luminous Pro Antique Camera, artist career reward) or choose a picture from paintings folder in your sims 2 documents (same one as custom paintings). I made it so that vertical frames take vertical pictures and horizontal frames takes horizontal pictures. Again, all credit for this functionality goes to Lucas and Maxis.
The set includes 2 standing frames (1 vertical and 1 horizontal) and 4 wall frames (2 vertical and 2 horizonal ones, normal and bigger versions). They are found in electronics-misc as they are supposed to be digital frames.
"Modern Photo Frame Landscape" and "Modern Photo Frame Portrait" are V2 versions of these frames, you can't have both in your game so you'll have to choose, to keep older or get newer version (I recommend newer one from this pack).
Compressed, clearly labelled, picture included.

UPDATE 29/11/2025
Made frames shiftable. Previously they would shift only with Lamare's Shiftabe Everything mod.
i haven't received any donations in almost a week and i am struggling really badly. i have bills that are going to get cut off and i need benadryl and food, as my food stamps are out.
if you can help me, i would really appreciate it. i'm sorry for making so many posts but i am floundering and my mental illness is getting a little out of control. my MDD is acting up and i'm unable to function very well.
you can commission me to do ts2 cc. i can do 4t2 hairs, f2m and age conversions of hair, retextures, recolors, handpainting clothing textures, converting clothing to bodyshapes, and other cas things.
saw this today on their website, and i'm honestly at a loss for words. they put a deposit on our account because we haven't been able to pay it on time recently, so this amount is non-negotiable, i've already tried. i may be able to get an extension but that's about it. please help me, any amount helps. it all adds up. i don't want to be without electricity in november because we use mostly electric heat.

Try it
What's this: an online tool, which helps to randomize some common things in TS2 (works on mobile devices, yay, but you have to start it from horizontal screen orientation).
Why: You probably know how much stuff in the community rely on random number generators: townies creation, random events, in-game teen aging, etc.
I'm aware that there are a handful of similar tools online. Initially I made this for myself, since I wanted everything to be in the same place. For a long-long time this was just a text on white background.
But recently I decided I want to start to contribute to the sims community, which I was silently "stalking" for years (for decade?). I booked a weekend to make an interface, it's ugly thought, since my UI skills are negative :D But at least it's functioning, so...
Use cases
Randomize CAS sims personality, genetics, chemistry (known issue: sometimes you might receive a sim with 10+ nice points, on my list to fix, but treat it as a sign to create super sweet bun for your hood)
Randomize sliders clicks to create sims in Bodyshop, based on this tutorial by Pooklet (generates randomized clicks in one list, you can adjust amount of face templates and sliders according to how many you have, up to 35 each)
First 250 out of 500 random events, based on this list by @lavender-noire (really appreciate I got permission to use it <3). And I kinda like how it turned out ^^'
Last, but not the least...
It started as personal project, but I'm happy to listen to community's suggestion what else could be added there!
I am considering pets rnd, specific legacy related rnd, adding adequate randomizer for townies skills and badges. Background music? Dark mode UI? Sometimes random events require additional 1dN randomization, so i might add this as well.

Once more, @lavender-noire for marvelous random events pool
Blank recolors of Maxis cork boards from University, Kitchen and Bath Stuff, and Teen Style Stuff.
You can use them as is, or place objects on them with cheats. First picture shows an example of this using instant photos taken with episims and pforestsims's Camera Overhaul.
This project was meant to be an add-on to @platinumaspiration's huge project of converting all beds from Sims 4. I asked @lamare-sims for help with these and she agreed! So here they are - all the pretty sleeping bags from Sims 4.
But wait, there's more! 😏
Our edit is based on a leaf pile converted from Castaway Stories by Pescado. It comes in a version for adults and a version for kids. The default mesh state is folded and sims will perform kind of unfolding animation before going to sleep:
The bag looks nice and puffy and sims will have random sleeping animations (2 variants):
Adults and kids can unfold only the bags suited for their age group, but adults can additionally fold kid's bags:
Adult bags (1 mesh, all the recolors):
Kid's bags (2 meshes):
Thank you once again @lamare-sims for making all these cool edits! 🤗
Compressed, clearly labelled. Picture and Lord Crumps' shadow file (needed for shadows) are included.
More overlays? More overlays! Specifically, 40 (40!) correlated body hair overlays for teens to elders of both genders, brought to you by the wonderful @episims and a little help from myself. There are different hair textures for each part of the body (arms, underarms, chest, stomach, back, cheeks, happy trail, pubis and legs), and you can combine them as you like. There are a lot of possible combinations!
Textures were made by Epi, based on Inky-Fish's textures (aside from the happy trail, which was stolen from @platinumaspiration). They come in the five natural colours, and will have the colour of your sims hair/eyebrows. Body hair goes grey when sims age into elders. The box is a 4t2 bath basket by Veranka, found in Misc/Dressers for 0§ (right next to this box by Nikki and my edit of Inky-Fish's box).
Besides making 200 textures, Epi cleaned unnecessary code from the "add/remove overlay" BHAVs, and also made an universal remove option for each part of the body, so you don't need to remember which specific overlay you've applied (*standing ovation*). Cute preview is also by Epi!
Download SFS | Dropbox
Credit goes to Epi, Inky-Fish, PlatAsp, Veranka and Morague. As usual, I only did the copy-pasting in SimPE. You can use the body hair textures for whatever you want, but DO NOT credit me! If you do, I will break into your house and kill your sims 💀
Since 40 overlays is a lot to go through just to get an idea of how they look like, here's a catalog that shows all of them:
See the image
Contains uncensored pixel butts and barbie fronts! You've been warned.
Feel free to save that image for yourself if you want to use it as a reference. Some additional explanations for those who might care:
Numbers follow Inky-Fish's original set names (their 4a is changed to 4 and 4b is changed to 5 in this system). They're meant to mark which of the overlays used to belong together and make it easier to rebuild the old overlays with this box.
Some parts of the different overlays in Inky-Fish's box were identical, which is the reason for those 1&2 combinations.
A and B options show additions, with A being the original and B being a new overlay we added.
Exceptions are Chest 2 Covered Dense and Back 2 Low, which are new overlays but marked to belong with Inky-Fish's set 2. That set had the most gaps.
Oh and the overlays in group 6 were only available for teens in Inky-Fish's box. We wanted to have them as an option for everyone.
These are some edits that I've made for my own use. I'm sharing because they might be useful for someone, but here's the deal:
⚠️ I won't make other versions/offer conflict support for these mods.
If you experience problems with them and HCDU+ doesn't report a conflict, please let me know. I've tested these mods and I use them in my own game.
If you find a mod conflict or feel like these edits aren't quite what you're looking for, please don't message me about it. The easy solution is to opt out of using these.
Thanks for understanding!
Visitor Controller Edit
An edit of the visitor controller version by @midgethetree.
Incorporates this trait mod by @hexagonal-bipyramid, so Loners show up on community lots and as walkbys less often.
There's a new a blocker object found under general/misc. Put this object into the inventory of any sim, and they won't show up on community lots or as walkbys at all.
Enables children and teens to visit community lots even when there aren't playable children/teens present.
Download (SFS) (alternate)
Requires: the trait_MAIN from 3t2 traits project (as the blocker object uses its mesh). Doesn't require using any of the traits.
Towel Mod by Color Traits with Inappropriate Behavior
A further 3t2 trait edit of my color trait towels mod.
Makes inappropriate sims change into naked instead of the towel after a shower/bath.
As a side effect, inappropriate sims might stay naked in some other situations where the game usually pushes the sim to put the clothes on asap.
Download (SFS) (alternate)
Requires: the easy inventory check and sauna towels by color traits.
Higher Relationship Requirement for Dining Groups
Not really an edit, but there's only a point in using this with simler90's dining group mod, even though this is a separate mod.
Raises the short-time relationship needed for visiting sims to dine together from 5 to 40.
Download (SFS) (alternate)
Requires: the dining group mod.
Committed Polyamorous Relationships Without Engagement Requires Steady
An edit of the committed polyamorous relationships mod by @palominocorn.
Proposing doesn't require sims to be going steady first.
Download (SFS) (alternate)
Unconventional relationships hurray
Polyamory Friendly Go Steady Wants/Fears
An edit of the go steady want/fear restrictions by @lamare-sims.
Adults who are engaged/married to someone can still roll the want to go steady with another sim.
Download (SFS) (alternate)
Requires: A mod that allows adults to go steady (look at the previous mod in this post) and the go steady wants being enabled for adults from want trees.
I’m about to go set up a beta-testing page for my newer mod(s), but someone requested this of me and since it’s a small edit of an existing mod and it looks like it works in my game I’ll just put it here.
It’s TwoJeff’s visitor controller, now set up to allow sims to wear togas (or PJs) to toga parties!
UPDATE 12/15/18: Replaced it with @crispsandkerosene‘s version with added options to ban sims based on personality, since that was requested and I figured there wasn’t a need to keep both versions.
UPDATE 12/16/18: Now with less lag when toga party attendees arrive.
UPDATE 12/16/18 2: Applied the same fix to TwoJeff’s Seasons/BV/Ft version, for those without Apartment Life.
UPDATE 1/12/19: The version compatible with AL has been updated so as to not conflict with Squinge’s “watch kids enabled” (previously, if you had both and got a sim to nanny for you on a residential lot the nanny might try and leave, causing an error). Have visitor controller load last.
UPDATE 1/14/19: Fixed a typo from the last update that was sometimes causing errors.
UPDATE 2/9/19: Now doesn’t force sims out of their work uniform, doesn’t ban the matchmaker NPC/gardening club members/Crumplebottom by default, and text strings have been edited to call the matchmaker NPC a matchmaker instead of using a slur.
There is a BCON named “Annoying NPC Group”. If you change the “# in group” to a value larger than 0 and add that many values following it, you can make the VC ban certain NPCs by default. The values (in hexadecimal) for different NPCs are:
1 = garden club member
2 = matchmaker
3 = crumplebottom
4 = newspaper delivery
5 = mail delivery
6 = professors
7 = cheerleaders
8 = cow mascots
9 = llama mascots
a = coaches
b = streakers
c = grand vampires
d = charlatan
e = head witches
UPDATE 2/17/19: There was some talk at MTS about the visitor controller making sims arrive at community lots dressed in their casual wear even if they left wearing something else, which led me to discover even more places where the visitor controller tried to change people’s clothing than I’d known about. Now I think I truly have them all, and if you don’t set a clothing preference for a lot sims’ clothing choices should be left alone by the Visitor Controller. You can go ahead and redownload, your VC settings will stay intact.
UPDATE 11/18/19: For whatever reason TwoJeffs didn’t add any room flags to the FT/BV version meaning it didn’t appear in the catalog on residential lots. This has now been fixed.
UPDATE 2/10/20: The visitor controller’s adjuster now is properly linked to its catalog description, and fixed how community lot tokens are set up so that all NPCs in the ‘annoying NPC group’ BCON will be properly banned from community lots by default as they are in residential lots, instead of sometimes just the last one in the list being banned.
UPDATE 4/25/21: Reworked how the mod checks for Inge’s colored keys. Should perform a lil better and hopefully fix issues with the visitor controller not recognizing key colors properly.
UPDATE 5/2/21: Fixed an issue with the check hobby flags BHAV that caused OTH-less sims to cause errors.
For those of us who play Open For Business in The Sims 2, cafes left a lot to be desired. Sims could come in and "shop" for food which would go into their inventory, but then they'd have to take it home... instead of sitting down and eating it.
The only other option was to run a full "restaurant" with a menu, host, server and more... And we all know that restaurants in The Sims 2 are hard, lol.
But what if there was another way?
Introducing my "Cafe Mod".
This is similar to the idea of "Pay To Play", but instead, its "Pay to Eat". Sims will take a plate of food from a display, pay a certain amount of money either to the business owner or to the ether, bypassing the cash register, sit down and eat it.
That's it, that's the mod 😂 Well, plus a little bit more.
Food does not need to be set "for sale" - if you do that, sims will buy it as normal. Thus it also cannot be "restocked", you need to manually do that (sorry).
The cost of the food has been tuned by me to make a nice little profit over what it costs for the sim to make the food, especially if you make group servings, however this can all be tuned inside the 'Maxis Foods update' in the mod.
To mark a lot as a 'cafe' (or any other venue where you want sims to pay to eat a plate of food) you must place my Cafe Lot Marker:
Which will trigger the mod to activate. Without this, sims will eat free on a community lot as normal. This is found in Misc/Misc for $100.
The lot controller has a few extra functions which can be enabled with the pie menu -
"Toggle Object Model" will toggle through some different models for the object. I converted this item from The Sims 4 cos I liked it (and added deco slots!!), but I've also included a bunch of vanilla Sims 2 meshes -
Cos Teapot!!!
There's also the ability to ban pets from coming to the cafe, unless you want a pet friendly cafe of course -
and you can also toggle a feature called "Eat or Go Home", which will force sims to leave the lot if they're not hungry.
In addition to this, I'm uploading separately some Food Business Improvement mods, which will tie into another upcoming project.
Should you download this mod, it will do a few things:
1. More customers will appear on your lot at every business rank
2. More customers will appear on a non-owned food venue that has the cafe lot marker
3. You'll be able to get away with under-paying your employees a little bit easier 😏 lol
I also highly, HIGHLY recommend to use THIS MOD in tandem with my cafe mods, or barista machines are crazy.
To use this mod, you cannot use the default Sims 2 Decra Chill, as sims cannot interact with food inside of that unless it's "for sale". I have created a custom Decra Chill, Repo'd to the original:
This will keep the food fresh, stop it from spoiling, and sims can pick up the plates to eat. It will also automatically set food to the "served" state if you bulk-make meals with the "make food" option on the fridge, as usually this food still has to be "served" by a sim in order to interact with it (lame).
I added a bunch of slots; 8 on each shelf. The 3 at the front and back are designed for small plates, whereas 2 in the middle row are designed for larger plates to go side-by-side.
There are 3 decorative slots on top; be aware if you place food up there, it will not be kept fresh!
I also took @veranka-downloads's 3t2 Deliciously Indulgent Bakery displays and tweaked them:
I added more slots to the shelves, removed the glass on the front and added fake sliding glass doors to the back instead to simulate how an employee would place food inside, and it won't look weird when a sim walks up and grabs food to eat.
Similarly, I took @jinxxsims's 4t2 Get To Work Baker's Cousin Display and did the same thing -
With cleaner more modern look handles on the back.
I've re-used the GUIDs from the original conversions cos my mod makes them more functional anyway, but yeah you can only have one version sorry.
All displays are found in Surfaces / Shelves.
As I said I have updated nearly all Maxis Foods to have a cost, and included a spreadsheet detailing the cost to make versus cost to eat.
I have also included resources and instructions for how to update custom foods to work with the mod. If a food hasn't been updated, it will simply cost $0 to eat at a cafe.
VERY IMPORTANT: If you have default replacements for the Maxis foods, they MAY not work.
This is because in testing it came to our attention that some defaults have not been created as true default replacements which only override the Mesh and Textures, but rather are a custom food that simply overrides the GUID of the Maxis food.
This will break the Cafe Mod.
If you'd like to use your defaults, you must update them the same way you'd update a custom food.
For my own game, I have updated some of Jacky93's food defaults to actually be true defaults which only override the required resources and will therefore work by default with my mod, which you can download if you want them.
I think that's all I have to say for now, lol.
As always, please report any bugs / problems / conflicts and I will try to solve them!
