@philburbank
reblog if you've made a good friend on tumblr.
Have you all taken a look at the new Jesse? Trim and handsome.
Head on over to my other blog, focused on the Pedro Pascal/Ethan Hawke short (30 minutes) ‘Strange Way of Life’. This year’s gay cowboy offering that has the festivals in its sight. The blog dedicated to this movie is ‘another-gay-cowboy’.
Ahead of accepting Aotearoa’s highest arts accolade, Dame Jane Campion talks about a life of creativity, and bringing women’s desires to scr
Some insight into TPOTD.
A source tells Page Six that the pair, who have been dating six years and have two children together, said “I do,” last weekend in Jamaica.
Bit of happy news.
Still not over Oscar’s choice in both Best Picture (they choose a safe TV movie) and in Best Actor. How? HOW? It beggars belief. Shows how warped the voting system is. Ben clearly was Best Actor, and that’s not just me, it’s all the Critic’s Associations.
Still we have the performance on film and just like Brokeback Mountain, it will outlive other films that won over it in the years that come.
Just a real travesty on so many levels. (Don’t get me started on the disrespect to Kodi!!!)
The awards just keep on arriving!! We all know who Best Actor was really. And Best Supporting, not to mention Best Picture. The Academy needs to stop giving awards on basis of totality of work ( that’s life time achievement) and give the awards to the years best.
Just an fyi: I started another side blog. It’s on a new gay romance about to be filmed this summer called The History of Sound. Set during WW1, we meet Lionel and David who start with a passionate one night stand. They then proceed to travel the US recording folk songs for a music conservatory and fall in love.
The lesson is that you never know when you are with ‘the one’ till you look back in retrospect. I’ve put a link up on the page to the short story, it’s rather beautiful as are David and Lionel.
I plan to document any news of the film set, going all the way through to release. My blog is @thehistoryofsound and I hope to see you there.
Honestly, I’m actually kind of glad TPOTD didn’t win that many Oscars because this year’s ceremony was quite possibly the worst one ever and I don’t want it attached to it anymore than it already is. History will vindicate it anyway and we know what a masterpiece it is.
I agree, well said!
Lack of love from the Academy for TPOTD was not unexpected. In the interim between BAFTA awards & the Oscars it was clear CODA was the more ‘acceptable’ choice & had momentum. Like Brokeback Mountain before it, TPOTD deals with a subject Hollywood isn’t ready to face; gay cowboys. Maybe Sam Elliott was speaking for the Academy? We still have a long way to go.
No matter the result of this years Oscar’s, TPOTD was the Best Picture, Benedict and Kodi should have won Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor. Ari Wagner too, was robbed.
If I may, just a comment on toxic masculinity: Will Smith, for his angry language alone, should forfeit his award. However the violent hit he delivered to Chris Rock was totally wrong. No matter what jokes Rock may have said that were insulting and insensitive, the answer isn’t violence. Shame on The Academy if they fail to act.
Finally I want to thank all my followers on this blog. I started this after reading the novel and wanted to memorialise the journey from page to screen. My friend Jenna contributed a lot of the content, and kept me focused, my gratitude to her as always. TPOTD will join Brokeback Mountain as representation of gay men of the West. Fingers crossed we bring more of their history and representation into the light for all to see and make it impossible to ignore.
The Power of the Dog: SPOILER REVIEW
A book could be written deconstructing the film “The Power of the Dog”. This spoiler review is only going to scratch the surface of the film as I don’t have time to write that book.
Good review and on point with the true essence that drives the narrative. Peter is on the edge of psycho horror movie murderer, Phil is alive because Bronco died. Good points you honed in on. There really was no option for a gay or effeminate man in that era and location, both are doomed by heteronormative Christian culture imposed under threat of death.
The "Power of the Dog" director was praised and criticized for remarks she made at awards shows over the weekend.
I hope not!
