He felt his face turn heat up when her eyes dived down and back, but was glad to answer her next question quickly. He opened his mouth to speak but his throat closed around the words. People couldn’t just know what he was. He’d been lying about it his whole life, and while a few people had stumbled across the truth like Bert, or were something Other and had taken a wild guess about Philip, he couldn’t chance Aggie being a dangerous something Other. He shouldered the cooler, following behind Agatha.
“Nahh, I’ve never really been scared of the ocean. It feels like home; just gotta respect the bigger fish,” he chuckled.
He held his free arm out for Agatha to take, and turned towards the beach. It was a pretty short walk, ten minutes at the most. If they wanted to move up or down the coast it could be a long walk to the lighthouse or lookout point, but Philip didn’t really want a setting, just the sand and the water and the girl.
“So, you have to tell me more about yourself; like where did you learn to dance like that?”
He could hear the waves crystal clear now; as soon as they got around the little flower shop the ocean would be in clear view. It was a New Moon, so while it’d be dark on the beach, the waves would be much calmer for Agatha, if she chose to get in the water.
“And here is our lovely beach. Careful on the stairs down, they’ve old,” he warned, letting her go down to the sand first.
A part of her wanted to ask if he needed help, she would gladly help him carry any of the stuff on down to the beach if he needed assistance. But like most men, he proved to be quite strong and seemed to have everything under control, or so that’s what it looked like.
“Is that so? Are you one of those big fish or just big in certain areas?” she asked, tilting her head to the side. With his arm held out to her, Aggie took it with a little bit of hesitance for two reasons; one, she wasn’t used to guys not trying to do anything and two, the moment she touched him was the moment she’d feel the energy radiating off his body. Not that it bothered her at all but it did irk the hell out of her that she couldn’t figure out what he was.
Hearing him question her dancing, Aggie choked a little on her words. It was a long story but Aggie decided it was best to give him the sweet short version, “I took ballet for many years but it didn’t pay the bills, a friend showed me all the ropes and strings attached to this job a while back and ever since then I’ve stuck with it” She shrugged and pressed up closer against him as she felt the first cool gusts of wind “Don’t worry sugar, I ain’t ever got too manhandled that I couldn’t protect… myself”
She stopped by the stairs with widened eyes, he wasn’t kidding when he said she should’ve checked out the ocean. His words of warning broke her from her daze and looking back at him, she kicked off her heels with a huge grin before taking off towards the shore, not at all listening to be careful.
“This place is beautiful!!” she yelled, doing a cartwheel easily before losing her balance and falling flat on the sand. Aggie sat up clearly unscathed and unnerved about the slip up, looking back at him with a huge grin “You wanted to know how I dance right? Well here’s a hint, I make sure not to do that in a show” She laughed and pushed her hair back, patting on the space next to her “Come, you can ask me whatever you want until I choose not to answer… then maybe we can go for a swim?”
“I hear you. Opening beer bottles and mixing cocktails barely covers rent.”
He laughed, watching her tumble to the sand. He picked up her shoes so no one else would, and made his way down to her. Her grin made him laugh more, and he returned the smile. He sat everything down and pulled out a blanket, spreading it across the sand.
“Sounds like a plan. So, where you from? What brought you to Stonewall?”
