Introducing Minho & Valerie.
These two original characters have been in my head for a while, and i wanted to start sharing them. This is a slow sapphic, character-focused story — mostly about connection, presence, and everything in between.
First post of many.
Mindful Disruption.
Chapter 1: 'The room that breathes
The apartment didn’t look like a studio.
It looked lived in.
A low couch pushed awkwardly to the side. A thin woven rug. A quiet air purifier humming like a second heartbeat, releasing a faint trace of eucalyptus into the air. The windows were cracked just enough to let the city breathe in without being loud about it.
Near the door, a row of shoes sat in disciplined pairs.
Inside, people moved differently.
Slower. Softer. Like they were trying not to disturb something invisible.
And in the center of it all—
Valerie.
Back straight. Eyes half-lidded. Presence sharp, like she could hear thoughts before they turned into words.
“Leave your phones on silent,” she said quietly.
No one argued. No one ever did.
A soft knock. Late.
Valerie didn’t turn immediately. She just inhaled once… and then—
“Come in.”
The door opened.
And the room shifted.
Minho stepped in like she didn’t realize she had entered a different world.
Nifty jacket. Hair slightly messy like she forgot to fix it after thinking too hard about something else. Her eyes moved too quickly—taking everything in, not settling anywhere.
She paused.
Looked at Valerie.
Then, instead of speaking—
She raised her hands.
Gestured, awkwardly.
Where do I put my shoes?
A few clients blinked.
Valerie stared at her for a beat.
Then, flatly—
“I’m not mute.”
A pause.
“The rack is right there.”
A couple of people suppressed smiles.
Minho nodded like that made perfect sense. No embarrassment. Just… adjustment.
She slipped her shoes off, placed them a little off-alignment compared to the others.
Sat down.
Cross-legged. Immediately started fidgeting.
“Close your eyes.”
Valerie’s voice softened the room again.
“Let your breath fall into its natural rhythm.”
Everyone followed.
Except—
Minho’s knee bounced.
Her fingers tapped lightly against her thigh.
Her shoulders shifted every few seconds, like her body didn’t trust stillness.
Valerie noticed.
Of course she did.
But she said nothing.
Minutes passed. The room settled.
Except for one person who seemed louder the quieter everything else became.
Finally—
Valerie opened her eyes.
“Is something uncomfortable?”
Minho opened one eye.
“…I can’t shut it off.”
“Shut what off?”
“My head.”
No hesitation. No filter.
Just fact.
Valerie studied her.
Not annoyed.
Not yet.
Just… measuring.
“We’ll talk after.”
Time passed slower for Minho than the most, but it wasn't her first time being the odd one out in a room feeling how times moves differently for her.
The room emptied in soft goodbyes.
Shoes slipped back on.
The air shifted back toward ordinary.
Minho stayed.
Of course she did.
She was now walking around the apartment like she had forgotten why she came but was curious about everything anyway.
Her fingers brushed the edge of a shelf. She peeked at a plant. Looked at the purifier like it might be doing something important.
Valerie watched her. Arms crossed. Already a little tired.
“You said your mind doesn’t stop.”
Minho turned.
“Yeah.”
A beat.
“I do fine. Like—life is fine. Good, even.” She shrugged. “But it’s never quiet.”
Her eyes flicked to a closed door down the hallway.
Then back. “And when I sleep… it’s worse. Dreams. Constant.”
She said it casually.
Like she had never really explained it before.
Valerie exhaled slowly.
“Sit.”
Minho did. Immediately. No resistance. No ego. Just… compliance.
“Don’t try to stop your thoughts,” Valerie said, sitting across from her. “That’s the mistake.”
Minho leaned forward slightly.
Focused now.
“You just… let them pass. And return to your breath.”
Valerie demonstrated.
Slow inhale.
Slower exhale.
The room softened again.
Minho watched.
Then copied.
Messier. Faster.
Valerie reached forward—
Not touching.
Just guiding the rhythm with her hand.
“Slower.”
Minho adjusted.
Again.
Again.
Something… almost clicked.
But not quite.
Minho’s eyes opened.
“…nothing happened.”
Valerie blinked.
“…it’s not supposed to happen.”
“Then how do you know it’s working?”
Valerie paused.
That question didn’t annoy her.
It lingered.
“We’ll keep going,” she said instead.
As Minho stood, she glanced again at the closed door.
“You always keep that locked?”
Valerie’s tone changed slightly.
“Yes.”
A beat.
“…okay.”
No pushing.
Just curiosity… parked.
“Next time,” Valerie added, “practice the breathing.”
Minho nodded.
Already halfway distracted by something else.
“Okay.”
And then—
“I’ll pay you extra if it works faster.”
Valerie closed her eyes for a second.
There it was.
The annoyance.
“You’ll pay what everyone else pays.”
Minho tilted her head.
“…okay.”
No offense taken.
Just… recalibration again.
That night—
Minho sat on her bed.
Trying.
Inhale. Exhale.
Inhale—
Her foot tapped.
Her mind wandered.
A memory. A plan. A question. A random image.
She opened one eye.
“…this is impossible.”
But she tried again anyway.
Because something about that room—
And that woman—
Felt like it should work.
they are just like in those memes and it's peak.

[playing spin the bottle]
Bolin: Okay, Korra, it's your turn to spin.
Korra: *very drunk* Haha, okay, fine. I'll kiss Asami.
Bolin: Korra, you're supposed to spin the bottle first.
Korra: I can't believe it's Asami again, fourth time tonight...
Bolin: Korra, the bottle...
Korra: Haha, me and Asami.
Bolin: Korra...
Korra: *moves bottle and points it at Asami*
Bolin:

Bolin:
Korra: Asami.
Asami: Are you fucking kidding me?
Asami: *has three hickeys, is already halfway onto Korra's lap, plans on using tongue*
Korra: I’m gonna do something dangerous.
Asami: Oh hell no.
Korra: Hell YES!
Asami: No!
Korra: Yes. You can’t stop me.
Asami: Alright, I’m coming with you.
Korra: Oh hell no.
