Working With Anarchists
Introduction to “Working With Anarchists”
My last entry was published here quite some time ago, March 2017, when America was in a “let’s see what happens?” mindset about its newly installed regime. “This Is Club Theatre” passages were then acquisitioned by Palgrave MacMillan as a book on a generation of obscureAmerican theatre. Recently, the new editors urged me to offer up a memoir, so this…

On Competing Playwrights
Welcome Back to the “…Club Theatre” Blog. Sorry it has been a long time since the last entry, there have been many items that should be addressed from our end as American society simply changed overnight and demands contemporary art on its walls, screens, and stages, but I’ve been busy authoring a book  on the “club theatre” movement and working on a new contemporary play that must be staged in…

Another Fiddler...
It’s almost complete - this is the official “Rewind” journal documenting the creation and writing process of this unique collaboration with musician and Burren co-owner Tommy McCarthy. As a playwright, I’ve had many unique opportunities, but this is an ultimate club theatre experience, as the play and the music are written explicitly for a particular stage and club as well as to fit into the “Burren Backroom Series” in Somerville, MA and broadcast weekly on Brian O’Donovan’s “A Celtic Sojourn” on WGBH Radio. The program airs every Saturday afternoon and presents Traditional Celtic and Gaelic music, as well as comedic performances from the Emerald isle.Â
I will document the rehearsals through text, music, and photos beginning Wednesday, February 16.
Sunday, February 14

Theater, Live Music
Tommy McCarthy and his fiddlers return to the remote isle of Inishbofin to find Liam in different circumstances than where they left him several seasons ago. In this scandalous sequel to "The Fiddlers of Inishbofin", which is again filled with beautiful traditional & contemporary Irish music, we find Liam abandoned by Fiona as her sister, Enya, returns to bring Liam and the other fiddlers a big surprise! This romantic comedy introduces new music and musicians, as well as some new blood to the Fiddlers' sessions. Playwright Peter Holm, puts Tommy McCarthy's story & music to stage in a premiere that's just in time for St. Patrick's Day. All proceeds to benefit Lahey Cancer Care Center.

This Wasn't Club Theatre
This Is Was Club Theatre
It was March of 2009, almost fourteen years since my play, Hootchgods, premiered in Boston at The Lansdowne Street Playhouse. My friend, Chuck, who had been a playwright as well before abandoning that path to establish his name as a Culinary figure, had granted me the “privilege” to work for him and his girlfriend at their new restaurant. I was training a new hostess (i.e. Maitr’d, Seater, smoking-hot-aspiring jazz singer working a floor plan) when I went into an instant shock.

"This Is Club Theatre"
Beginnings-July, 1995, an article appeared in "The Boston Phoenix"-Before it was a free publication-This was the first time that my work and our projects were referred to as "Club Theatre".
In fact, the journalist, Theresa Regli, who covered the production of Hootchgods at The Lansdowne Street Playhouse wrote "...move over dinner theater, this is club theater."
The feature article entitled "Young Blood (Theatre for the club set at small change and Lansdowne)", appeared in a weekly series that followed the Boston Theatre Scene in The Phoenix called AISLE HOPPING. Though the season at Lansdowne only lasted for two shows that summer, and Mama Kin and the Lansdowne Street Playhouse has long been replaced -currently it is the new House of Blues. Even with the efforts of club impressarios and one of the most influential rock and roll bands of our time couldn't convert the clubset into the theatre set.
We do survive, though.
