Dear listener, firstly, thank you for joining me for more music this year. I’m going to make this audio installment a bit of a mini-entry because I can never manage to find a hell of a lot of info on SPYDER550. Its SPACE ART WEEK 25’ on my page, and I had to reach for an appropriate musical vibe to go along with the motif. Just wanted to acknowledge my regulars (you know who you are) for coming by and dropping likes on the materials and for tuning in to my personal radio station here on Tumblr. About three years ago I moved to North Carolina after my divorce and since I’ve been down here, I’ve been subconsciously taking in a lot of music that is prominent in the US South. I’ve immersed myself in lots of jazz, blues… and plenty of southern-style hip hop. I was truly blessed to come across phonk; a gritty subgenre of hip hop which originated in Memphis, TN, which is a mere ten-hour drive to the west of me. Since its inception, phonk has become a worldwide phenomenon as it is easy to produce due to its chopped and screwed nature, allowing your average Joe or Jane to simply use samples and clips from various sources on top of a beat of their own creation. Out of any of the phonk artists I’ve come across online, SPYDER550 is my very favorite. I enjoy his low and mysterious profile, his flow and style, and how emotionally resonant his repetitive but mesmerizing beats are to me. I wish I could offer you more information on this artist, unfortunately all I’ve come across is extremely vague nonsense, much of which I suspect is utter BS or a smokescreen to keep his identity masked. Do yourself a favor, crank your speakers or headphones ALL THE WAY UP for this one, smash play, and enjoy! It's called Spring Kushing. Way more music to come this year…
