My tumblr is a shit show lol
One day, I’ll find a man who
Inspires me to be the best I can be...
Helps me love myself as much as I love him...
Pushes me to expand myself, while understanding my boundaries...
Seeks adventure and learning in everything he does...
Respects my mind and body, as well as his own...
Loves his family as much as I love mine...
Never stops trying to win me, even when he has me already...
Appreciates sentiment and romantic gestures...
Supports my goals...
Believes in me...
Breaks up my dull routines with spontaneity...
Admires my passion for what I love...
Tolerates my unusual habits...
Shows pride in me, even when I’m not around...
Surrounds himself with positivity and people who respect him...
Works hard for what he wants...
Challenges me without being overly assertive or aggressive...
Faces problems with a cool head and accepts them for what they are...
Shares with me, whether it’s food, the tv remote, or just conversation about what’s going on in their life...
Embraces the beauty in all things...
Always finds ways to make me smile...
Makes the distance never feel quite as far...
Patiently stands by my side through my struggles...
Takes my advice and opinions seriously...
Adores animals as much as I do...
Manages their time wisely...
Treasures our time together...
And I’m going to marry him.
Dear Tumblr
My life has been a real drag (to put it lightly) over the past year. Not only have I been tasked with trying to figure out who I am by going to college and starting my life, but I’ve lost some very important people in my life who I really wish were there to help me through it. The good news is that I’ve made new connections to family and friends, but this last blow to my life has really left me in a slump. Ever since my grandfather passed last week, there has been a weight in my chest. More so than when my aunt, who was like a second mother to me, passed. It’s not so much sorrow for our loss, I know he is in a better place. I have been so frequently surrounded by death and loss lately that I no longer feel the need to grieve. Death is natural and the only way to cope is to hope there is something better for them after life. It’s a general sorrow that burdens me. A sorrow for everything that has happened lately - for the loss of five family members and a teammate, for the chaos that my family has turned into because we haven’t had time to adjust, and for the lack of sunshine amidst the clouds following me. The stress is unbearable. It’s always one thing after another after another.
Don’t worry, this isn’t me giving up on life. I just wish life would throw me a lemon.
Anyway, I have never been less motivated to do things. I have never been so stressed over the small stuff. And boy have I never been so afraid of commitment. But there is hope. There is at least one lemon in my future. Granted it’s 10 months away but it’s a pretty good looking lemon. My cousin is getting married to the guy of her dreams, they’re going to be so happy. And yes, it’s one of my cousins I actually like. She’s been the closest thing I have to a sister and she has asked me to be her bridesmaid. I’m going to put off fretting the fact that the wedding is the weekend before spring finals next year and just continue to be excited that things are at least looking a little up now, even if it isn’t exactly for me.
Fingers crossed that lemon stays yellow until we get there and praying there might be some other little lemons along the way. Here’s to hope and a little bit of sunshine.
Lol at that attempt to revive my tumblr...
You know you're in college when you apologize for wasting cheap old booze
The Summer I Learned Not to Care
I have this problem where I tend to care too much when my boyfriend is up to no good (aka under the influence). It’s a problem because it stops me from being able to enjoy the things I want to do, especially when I’m not even with him. I guess a lot of it springs from how I grew up; my mother was always strongly opposed to drug use and we have a family history of alcoholics. But I didn’t really know myself before I came to college. Now that I’ve had more experience with those things and I can tell myself and my own values from the things I was raised to believe in, it should be easier to let his usage not bother me. It is, a little. More so than it used to be. But it still really gets to me when he’s off with his friends, getting crazy, and I’m home with my parents watching television. I used to think it was part jealously but honestly, those hobbies are something I’m proud of not being apart of all of the time. Part of me believes that I still don’t trust him, for some unknown reason, for religiously dedicating himself to being under the influence all of last year without my knowledge (while we were together). But he’s grown so much since then, I don’t know why I can’t shake it. Why can’t I spend my own time being happy instead of worrying about him? Is it because I’m worried that smoking and drinking influence his depression? A little, but I know he has control around his good friends so I don’t understand why I can’t get on with my life. But this summer, that’s going to change. I’m going to learn to take care of myself first because it’s something I often forget to do. I’m going to learn that he has a life of his own and it’s not my business as long as stays out of trouble. This summer is about figuring me out. Hold me to that, tumblr. A couple months from now I better have my shit together and you can hold me accountable. It’s time I took control.
My biggest pet peeve
When I have to get up before someone for class and I'm trying to get as much sleep as possible but they have two alarms that go off before I even get up. Don't fuck with my sleep, man.
You know what would make me really happy right now?
When I went to prom last year, it was kind of a mess. We ended up having a good time, but overall the day was just kind of a disaster. I was running later than I planned, it started to downpour, I forgot to text my friends who were going to meet me for pictures (who then were all really mad at me), and my boyfriend was really upset because he didn't have a car to pick me up and my mom offered to bring him her car and he took it the wrong way and he just gets easily very upset (he's super hard on himself and can sometimes be pretty insecure). So I had a crying and angry boyfriend, some pissed off friends, I didn't get to take the pictures I wanted, and I spent the 20 minutes before we left pulled over in the car arguing and crying and saying I didn't want to go anymore. (Huge shoutout to my cousin for the makeup that survived that mess). We had met at his mom's olive oil store to take pictures. If I didn't point it out, you probably couldn't tell how upset he looks in them. Anyway, we ended up clearing up the issues and going to the dance anyway. Outside of that messy beginning and the shitty music they played at the dance, we had a good time. I got to see a lot of my friends dressed up and looking stunning. My boyfriend looked really good and I loved my dress. I just wish I could redo it to avoid the disaster that preceded it. What I would love right now, since I asked my boyfriend to prom, is if he would (even though we're in college now) mock ask me to prom again. Go all out and do something fancy and elaborate. Just for kicks. And then we could get all dressed up again and play real dancing music and just kind of relive that night for ourselves. I don't blame him for getting upset the night of our real prom, but I think we both deserve to relive it. It would just be kind of cool if he did that though, then maybe he wouldn't feel so bad about not being able to drive me and do the traditional thing. Then we could take really nice pictures at a place of choice without having to worry about crowds or rain getting in the way. Plus he looked so handsome all dressed up and what are the odds of that happening again. Just a thought. The likelihood of it actually happening is slim to none, but I can dream, can't I?
The Truth About Suicide: A Tribute to Sam
Last semester, I was throwing the frisbee around with maybe three or four other guys from the team. We were on Hansen football field and it was sort of chilly out. We stopped to take a break and get some water. I sat down next to Sam and he looks at me. “So you know how on Windows, the Facebook app has an icon with people’s profile pictures on it?” I was new to my Windows laptop but I knew exactly what he was talking about because every time I would open my start menu, Goose (Jonathon Helton)’s muscle-y profile picture would pop up. “Well, your picture keeps showing up on my computer every time I open it and it doesn’t change. It’s literally every time.” I thought it was really funny because we hadn’t known each other for long but he just brought it up like it was normal. Another time we were out there, he looked up at me from where he was sitting on the ground and had my recent Instagram picture pulled up on his phone. He asked if I had been wearing any makeup when I took it. I told him it was only mascara and he said, “good, girls really shouldn’t wear makeup. It just doesn’t look good. They should be natural.” It was sweet the way he felt. The other times I got to hang out with him I really got to know how funny and caring he was. He was open with us all about his struggle with depression, but he seemed really comfortable around us. He bragged with Cam about who had cooler running shoes. Even if they weren’t up to any good, he loved spending time with the other guys on the team. When he told us he wasn’t coming back for a second semester, we were all devastated. I tried to think a ways I could help but I guess I just really didn’t know what to do. His family just didn’t have the money to send him back. Even at our last tournament in Champaign, he played with our team and hung out with everyone after. That was two weeks ago. Yesterday I went to his wake.
We really weren’t sure if the rumors were true last week when we saw the news on Facebook. None of us knew what happened or how or why, but it was gradually confirmed that Sam was gone. I have a hard time coping with death as it is so it took a while to actually soak in. But it was true. We later found out from his dad that Sam took his own life. We just saw him. The team just played with him. His recent messages still pop up in the group chat, his picture a hard reminder that its over. As hard as it is for all of us here, I can only imagine what his family is going through. To find that your son has lost his battle with depression - someone you created and raised and believed in. To lose your brother, your nephew, your best friend. It's a pain that cannot be even remotely illustrated in words. To walk past his bedroom every day. To see all of the videos and photos of him hanging on the walls in the house. It’s an emptiness that can never be filled.
I felt awkward at his wake. Don’t get me wrong, it was a beautiful service in a large space. So many people were there. So many crying, heart-broken people who had just lost a star in their life. Sam helped a lot of people. He had a gift for cheering everyone up. I didn’t need to know him long to believe it. But it was hard to walk into a room of those closest to him. I was terrified to approach his family because what do you say to someone who just lost their son? What do you tell someone who had just lost 18 years of their life spent loving, nurturing, and growing their child into such a wonderful human being? “I’m sorry for your loss” and “my condolences” just don’t feel right. Telling them how wonderful their son is and how much he cared for them is only going to poke at that irreversibly tender spot of their hearts and make them cry more. I wasn’t there to make them cry. I don’t handle it well when people cry. But I have been on their end. I have been told “I’m sorry for your loss” and looked at with sympathetic eyes. I have been told how much she cared for me and how I was a huge part of her life. There is nothing you can say to someone who has gone through such a traumatic loss to ease the pain or make them feel any better. I just felt out of place and it was so surreal to see my friend laying in that casket. The makeup was overdone, but there he was, in his beanie as always, with a Mass Hysteria disc signed by our team propped up in the back of his casket.
I didn’t go up to him. I couldn’t. The closer you get the more real it becomes and it’s just hard for me to face the fact that he’s gone. A kid my age took his own life. Someone I talked to and lived in the same building as. I remember first meeting him and noticing the tattoos he had on his ankles: Hermes wings. They were so cool and the more I hung out with him, he just talked about how much running meant to him. How he loved to clear his head by just heading out on a late night jog and running for miles. His desire to beat his depression was inspiring, yet you could always hear it in his voice how much it weighed on him.
The hardest part is that we all thought he was okay. It’s so hard to notice when we’re so far away but the weekend they played with him, he was all over it. He seemed fine, even talked about playing with us in the tournament this upcoming weekend. It was so sudden. I just wonder what his last words were, who he talked to. I know deep down he didn’t want to do it. He couldn’t have. There were so many people who cared for him and he had to have known it. But depression is a wicked downward spiral and he just couldn’t fight it anymore.
Don’t ignore the cries for help from your friends and family, even yourself. If you notice any signs of depression or suicide, seek help. Too many sons, daughters, husbands, wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, best friends, teammates, and classmates are lost every day to suicide. Just because you may not be depressed or suicidal or have anyone close to you who is depressed or suicidal doesn’t mean it can’t happen. Be aware of the signs and seek help before it is too late. http://www.suicidepreventionlifeline.org/
If you are suicidal or depressed, know that there is hope. Don’t let your loved ones lose the light you bring to their lives. You matter. There may not be a permanent cure for depression, but that is not a reason to give up. Fight for your friends, fight for you family, and fight for the life you deserve because there are so many things to live for. I know it’s hard to see sometimes. It’s okay to be sad. But don’t let depression rule your life. Seek help from someone if you haven’t. I know what it’s like to want to suffer in silence, to feel like a burden, but so many people out there are willing to listen to you and help you see that there is a future for you.
My boyfriend is a suicide attempt survivor. Before we really got to know each other, he tried to end his life because he didn’t want to fight any more. I couldn’t thank God enough for an unsuccessful attempt. and I think he would say the same. A little over a year into a committed relationship and I couldn’t imagine not having him in my life. It has its ups and downs since we both have our own battles to fight, but he is my inspiration to keep going. Even if it ends up not working out, I will always be there for him and he will for me. So fight for that someone. Even if you haven’t quite met them yet, keep fighting because they might be right in front of you. Life has a lot to offer, don’t sell yourself short. As much as you want to fight me on this, there are people who care, so let them care about you and let them in.
I saw a shooting star on the way home from Sam/s wake. It was the first time I ever saw one and it was beautiful. I’m not really one for religion but I’d like to think it was a sign from Sam letting us know he’s still with us. He’s always going to be with us because he was an amazing person. Sam, wherever you are, they’re sure lucky to have you. Keep an eye on all of us, will you?
I’ve decided to reignite the fire that is my blog (lol that’s a joke) with the shit I learn in college. I’ve done blogging for a class before and I enjoyed it, I just kind forgot that blogging used to be Tumblr’s main purpose (now it’s mostly memes). Anyway, this year has been quite the adventure so here’s some exciting (or depressing) tales from the heart of WIU. I’m probably not going to filter most of this so be prepared. That is all.
The Geology Department and I got off on the wrong foot...
So about a month ago, I’m chillin in the grass behind some trees pretty much in the center of campus. I was just doing homework, trying not to draw attention. A few guys walk into some of the bushes next to me and I can see what they’re doing behind the tree line. They were very nonchalant as they wandered over to the sewer cover. I instantly thought they were up to no good. “Oh my god, they’re hiding a stash,” I thought and I got all giddy because I’m that awkwardly normal kid on campus who doesn’t really deal with drugs and that sort of stuff a lot.
I just sat there watching them and they didn’t seem to care that I knew. Not a lot of other people were around and there was a break in the treeline that people walking through campus could easily look through to see what they were doing. I saw them open a plastic baggie and took out a pill container. Weed, had to be weed. But why hide a stash in public and in broad daylight? (well sundown) They shifted over a little so I couldn’t see what they were doing after they opened the container, but I heard chuckles and lots of hushed conversation. About ten minutes later, they close up the container, place it back under the very edge of the sewer cover and bury it with some dead grass and leaves. As they walked away, I started to pack up my stuff to meet my boyfriend. I casually walked past where they were to get a closer glimpse, thoroughly convinced it was a weed stash.
I told my boyfriend about it and how I contemplated stealing it just to be an ass. He wanted to check it out, too, so I took him over there. He picked it up, trying to hide it from anyone who may look over. We wanted to know what was in there before we just walked off with it so he opened it. He pulled out another plastic baggie and with something inside of it.
All I have to say is fuck the geology department. I felt so invigorated by adventure and being a delinquent only to be absolutely devastated to find out that in the capsule was a log for the secret society of the geology department. Why.
Life is so different
I hate making big decisions
When someone insults your favorite band:
It's like quitting cold turkey in a room full of smokers
Never thought this would be possible
But Christmas music is actually making me majorly depressed. Please turn it off. Can it be next august yet?
I hate feeling this way.
I hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate it.
