This year has been weird and hard and isolating but it’s also been the year that I’ve had to face my demons and fears. I’ve learned a lot, I wish I could have learned sooner because in some cases I care about I learned too late.

My intentions were good, my actions were not. I’m sorry. I’ve learned a lot in the past weeks. Just want the best for you and want you to be happy, whatever that means for you. If it means moving on then I wish you the best. I’ll miss you and deep down I’ll always care but I know now that I need to step away. I’m sorry I couldn’t realize that sooner. What’s meant to be will be.

Your impact on other people is bigger than you think. Someone still giggles when they think of that funny thing you said. Someone still smiles when they think of the compliment you gave them. Someone silently admires you. The advice you give has made a difference for people. The support and love you've offered others has made someone's day. Your input and opinions have made someone think twice. You're not insignificant and forgotten. Your existence makes a positive difference, whether you see it or not.

Tbh I wish I could believe this.... having to essentially teach yourself that you matter is hard. Logically I know I may have made a positive impact on someone but on low days it’s hard to see it or even fathom that anything I did could really change anyone.

i don’t think people really get how little feedback fanfic authors actually get? like the effort to reaction ratio is so abysmally skewed here that a fic nearly 50,000 words long takes an entire year to amass like. 16 comments. someone reblogged a fic i wrote at 4 am and tagged it with a 5-word compliment and i can’t stop thinking about it, not because it was so nice but because half the time you post a fic you’re going to hear nothing and anything feels like so much

fandom culture is so, so good about giving artists the credit they’re due, but we gotta start doing that for writers too. you’ve got no idea how much people put into their stories and get maybe a handful of reblogs and a dozen-odd kudos. that’s not enough. writing is an endurance sport and y’all need to start giving fic writers a reason to endure it and improve their craft. encourage writers like you encourage artists. reblog fics, leave tags, leave comments, acknowledge that these stories do not just spring into being for your entertainment. 

every single damn writer i know feels like half of their readers see them as a machine. that’s gotta change.

 As someone who both creates AND consumes fic, honestly it means the world when people kudos and comment. Be generous in your enthusiasm. Try not to let your anxiety stop you from being unabashedly exuberant about something. Leave kudos. Leave comments (it doesn’t have to be anything big– just ‘Loved this,’ or whatever.) Create that fic rec post with all your faves on and share it around, people love fic rec lists (I swear 90% of my tumblr followers come from that). Screw your courage to the sticking place and message that one author who wrote the thing that you fucking loved and TELL THEM. I promise NO ONE is gonna be going– god how annoying, someone liked the thing I spent hours creating. No. ALL fan fic authors WANT you to tell them you liked their shit. You could write them a goddamn essay detailing the stuff you loved and they’d print it out, get it framed and hang it over their bed.  And when they’ve done that you know what they’re gonna do– WRITE MORE.

Everything here is accurate, but that last paragraph is gold. I’ve basically given up on writing for Sheith because I get virtually nothing in the way of feedback except from my beta readers. It tells me almost no one cares about what I produce, and putting the effort into writing it is a waste of my time.

If you want more content from your favorite authors, let them know you love what they’ve already put out there. Don’t just expect them to keep producing fics for your enjoyment when you can’t be bothered to tell them you enjoy it. If you can’t take a minute, or two, or five, to write a nice comment, why in the world should we put hours/days/months/years into creating something for which we’ll get paid with silence and indifference?
