I wish I could write like my boyfriend: he writes seemingly without a care in the world, with abandon, and without caution, as if no one, not even his own eyes, would ever see his entries.

I’m not like that. Maybe the reason I hate my writing is because, as he said, my words were “insincere.” Cookie-cutter words + cookie-cutter ideas = cookie-cutter articles. If I can even call them articles. Maybe the several months I had spent freelancing and churning out words for strangers ruined writing for me. I can no longer write like I used to, back when writing wasn’t a means to earn money and my words were mine, and mine alone. Maybe I’ve subconsciously hated my writing all this time because I had known my writing could be more free.

Now, the only times that I feel my words are “sincere” are when I write with strong feelings. Anger, sorrow, and regret - so far, these three have been my favorite homes in which to write in.

I have never been able to write happy; my entries had always sounded hollow and incoherent when I had tried.

I wonder if there’s something wrong with my psyche.

Ask Ethan: Can We See Our Galaxy’s Supermassive Black Hole?

I understand that our galaxy has a massive black hole in its center, but how close would you have to be to actually see it? I’m guessing you wouldn’t have to be close to the event horizon, but given all the stars surrounding it, and the dust and debris being sucked into it, it seems unlikely that you could see it from any appreciable distance, even if you were directly above or below the plane of the galaxy.

One of the great discoveries of the past few decades was that of a supermassive black hole at the center of our Milky Way. No longer was it mere conjecture or unverified theory; observations in the X-ray, infrared, radio, and of stars orbiting a central, non-luminous point all indicate the presence of a 4 million solar mass black hole at a location known as Sagittarius A*. At a distance of 26,000 light years, an object as small as this black hole’s event horizon – even at 23 million km in diameter – would be unresolvable to a telescope the size of an entire country. But thanks to the very clever technique of very long baseline interferometry, the proposed Event Horizon Telescope has the capabilities, for the first time, of imaging a black hole’s event horizon directly.

When I was in college, a teacher once said that all women live by a ‘rape schedule.’ I was baffled by the term, but as she went on to explain, I got really freaked out. Because I realized that I knew exactly what she was talking about. And you do too. Because of their constant fear of rape (conscious or not), women do things throughout the day to protect themselves. Whether it’s carrying our keys in our hands as we walk home, locking our car doors as soon as we get in, or not walking down certain streets, we take precautions. While taking precautions is certainly not a bad idea, the fact that certain things women do are so ingrained into our daily routines is truly disturbing. It’s essentially like living in a prison – all the time. We can’t assume that we’re safe anywhere: not on the streets, not in our homes. And we’re so used to feeling unsafe that we don’t even see that there’s something seriously fucked up about it.
