Dennis has a past he dances around, vaguely refrences his college years with a quick deflection. Santos tries to get it out of him but she can't ever get him to budge. She has her theories. She and Mel and even Victoria all have heard about this weird and almsot distant thing he sometimes will reference before shutting himself away with an awkward laugh.

He dodges it and eventually it comes out when everyone's drinking and he blurts it like its his most well kept secret.

He was in a frat in Nebraska.

Dennis Whitaker was a frat boy.

when Trinity first moved into her two bedroom apartment in Pittsburgh, she had, so sillily, figured that if she were to acquire a roommate it would be a woman (because in what world is she inviting a man to live with her?). thinking this, she bought matching toiletries for the bathrooms.

then, Dennis, who is notably a man, moves in with her. the first night, Trinity kind of laughs it off, saying, “this isn’t really a situation i was prepared for, we can go get you some 3 in 1, or whatever it is that you use, in the morning.”

not wanting to be a bother, he replied, “no, don’t be ridiculous! i’ve always wanted to smell like…” picking up the shampoo and body wash, he continued, “lavender and roses.”

a few days later, they’re standing around the nurses’ station with Victoria and Mel when Mel, sensing something, leans in close to them and breathes in their identically scented hair. “why do you guys smell the same?”

Trinity and Dennis had taken every precaution so that no one would suspect them. Trinity, not wanting anyone to find out about the circumstances that led to them living together (out of respect to Dennis), tries to answer, “well-”

“it’s what she had.” he, accidentally, interrupts with a shrug, completely oblivious to the possible implications of sharing shampoo with Trinity.

then, Mel asks, “you… are using her shampoo?”

Trinity is just a second too late to stop him from absentmindedly replying, “i mean, i’m staying at her place.” she just looks at him, telepathically saying, what is your issue???

Victoria, ever the gossip seeker, asks, through a grin, “you’re staying at her place?”

finally, it seems to click for him, and he cringes, “oops.”

Trinity just throws her arms up, “‘oops’ he says,” and rolls her eyes.

Neither one of them remembers what the context was anymore, but at some point, Dennis texted Trinity that she was his best friend. Trinity keeps a screenshot of that message in a private folder on her phone for nights when her bad thoughts get too loud. Because sometimes, the only thing stopping her is the thought that she can't do to him what her old best friend did to her

Dennis and trinity who snuggle up in dennis's bed after a long shift because they cant stand being alone right now. Trinity holding dennis to her chest so she knows that hes still with her and thats hes ok so in turn shes ok. While dennis needs to be held or he feels like he might just fall apart into a million pieces. He likes knowing that he has someone finally in his corner no matter whats happens or what sort of person he is.

theatre kid Trinity gets caught by Dana trying to steal some of Dennis’s snacks from the hidden stash in his locker. walking away with her arms raised in surrender, she mutters, “gee, officer Krupke, chill. i bought those snacks.”

whenever trinity cooks dinner, she always takes a bite out of dennis’s food before giving him his plate. the first time he receives a grilled cheese with a suspicious chunk missing resembling that of a human mouth, he awkwardly laughs and says, “umm… i think this might be your plate…” and she just replies, “nah, that’s yours. didn’t want you to think it was poisoned.”

She tells him everything is fine and essentially to fuck off, yet doesn't take her eyes off him for a second as he's walking away. She wanted him to stay so bad, and he did, in the moment she was slipping and needed someone most. The moment he sticks around, she allows herself a second of vulnerability in such a stressful shift. He affirms and comforts her, something she hasn't been able to get a lot of today. Their dynamic is genuinely so everything to me I can't :'(((

on occasion, dennis whitaker will ground himself with… the ground. growing up with hardwood floors, it wasn’t uncommon for him or his brothers to splay out on the floor to try to escape the summer heat. nowadays though, he just drops to the carpet of the apartment whenever he feels homesick.

the first time he was a little nervous, turning to trinity and asking, “hey, is it cool if i like… lay on the floor?”

“umm, sure? i don’t care, man.”

it becomes one of those behaviors of his that trinity deems slightly weird. eventually she gets used to it, and doesn’t even bat an eye when she has to step over him, sprawled across the kitchen floor, to get to the fridge. sometimes he falls asleep, most times it’s just for the comforting familiarity.

baran, however, does not have the same knowledge, and one afternoon, about 2 months into dating trinity, she opens the apartment door with trinity in tow carrying groceries. that’s when she finds dennis inexplicably laying loose-limbed along the living room floor.

immediately considering the worst, a habit she’s picked up since working at the pitt, she braces herself to face whatever may be wrong with him. looking back at trinity, she whispers, “don’t go in there… let me take care of this.” locking the door behind her, baran anxiously creeps towards dennis’s slack body.

confounded and worried, trinity sets down the bags and searches for the spare key under the mat. then, she cracks the door open to peek inside and sees the scene playing out. silently laughing to herself, she sneaks up behind baran, who’s about to check for a pulse, and gently tosses a loaf of bread at dennis. it lands right on his sternum, and he’s suddenly resurrected.

simultaneously, baran and dennis sigh out the words, “what the fuck.” baran out of confusion, dennis out of annoyance.

unable to hold her laughter back anymore, trinity starts heading to the hallway to get the rest of groceries, “we got white bread for the white boy!”

dennis groans out a thanks, and baran, trying to regain control of her breathing, flops down next to him on the floor.

trinity always walking around compeltely shirtless at home, and at first dennis will always really dramatically slap his hand over his eyes whenever she does it and stay like that until she puts a shirt on, until eventually shes like, 'dude, if you can walk around without a shirt on, why cant i?' and he actually cannot think of an answer.
