Sometimes you don’t get the crazy sunrise or whatever else you were expecting but dragging yourself there in the cold, dark morning is often enough more memorable then any sunrise. Watching the light come out from behind clouds and paint the entire landscape another color for just a few minutes and then retreat back behind the clouds makes for an exciting evening! Also I don’t know about you but I think that tall, lone yucca looks like a cigar with that defined cloud being a smoke trail coming from the tip. Haynes Canyon Vista Overlook is a great place to stop and take in the views of the wooded Sacramento Mountains near Cloudcroft and the arid plains below. On a clear day you can see White Sands National Park from above. On this wintery day the view of White Sands was a bit obstructed by that fast moving storm which would bring a blizzard through the area shortly after this photo was taken. The first picture is how the drive started and the second is how it ended. Coming off the mountain in that blizzard with a line of cars with Texas license plates in front of me (no offense Texans).
