It’s that time of year again! Here is the yearly Faces of Forsythia redraw, which has taken place over 6 years!

As per tradition, I redraw all the ‘Faces of Forsythia’ and try to show off my improvement in art. The TL;DR of the lore is that Forsythia is the Celestial Being of Maths, who shares her face with numerous girls across various alternative dimensions. If you’re wondering why Sorcha is here, she shares the same face as Aodhamair, who you can consider as the old appearance of Forsythia. If you want the full low down, I’ll have to sit you down for 2 hours and whip out 1000 Power Point slides.

I first started this series of drawings in 2020, however I only started posting them on this account in 2024. If you’re wondering what the first version looked like… well it’s lost media. I guess the lore thickens once again.

Here's a portrait of my character Elowen, where I decided to draw her in the folk tale she's based off. A quick history for those who are interested: She's based off the character Princess Olwen/Elowen from the Cornish folk tale The Romance of Princess Olwen/Princess Elowen/Elowen and the Bramble Bush. The funny thing is that the tale started out as 'The Romance of Princess Olwen' in Cornish Saints and Sinners (1906) by J.H. Harris, which may have been inspired by Cornish folktales, but were not necessarily retellings. Despite this, Donald R. Rawe decided to make a retelling of Harris' story for his book Traditional Cornish Stories And Rhymes (1971), where he titled his retelling 'Princess Elowen'. Funnily enough, Elowen isn't even a traditional Cornish name, as it was first suggested as a Cornish girls' name by Christopher Bice in 1970, in his book Names for the Cornish. Bice took words from a Unified Cornish dictionary to use as girls' names, as there were not a lot of distinctly Cornish girls' names at the time. In 2013, we then get another retelling titled 'Elowen and the Bramble Bush' as part of the Mazed Tales project.

Guess who finally figured out how to turn their art into GIFs on Tumblr. I feel like I've suddenly obtained the infinity gauntlet. Hopefully my GIF does not cause people's devices to crash like last time. Also today is the 21st December, which happens to be the anniversary of something that happens in one of my stories. Anyway, time for a massive lore dump, since I like talking about my ocs: TL;DR Sorcha did something too cool and now Heulwen is being salty in the corner.

Sorcha Aodhamair McGee is a Forsythian doll created by the Celestial Being of Maths, Forsythia Redfoot, to serve as the last line of defence against monsters that threaten the London Borough of Camden. In Iteration 1, her purpose becomes obsolete, as Forsythia operates as the magical guardian of Camden, which prompts Sorcha to become a magical guardian in the City of Westminster and work alongside the Elementalists faction. During this time, Sorcha becomes close with Keira McGee, a member of the Elementalists faction.

During a holiday in East Kent, Sorcha unleashed a large magical explosion on 21 December 2020 at 8:32pm in Sandwich, Kent to vanquish numerous hordes of monsters and save Heulwen Belyn. This prompted an investigation into her identity, where a mispronunciation of her name led to people ascribing her the pseudonym ‘Seahorse’. That night also sparked jealousy in Heulwen, who attempted to fight monsters alone, as she had been inspired by a Tiktok to become a magical guardian and this leads to the events of ‘Running from 14.’ During a holiday in East Kent, Sorcha unleashed a large magical explosion on 21 December 2020 at 8:32pm in Sandwich, Kent to vanquish numerous hordes of monsters and save Heulwen Belyn. “I’m always in your shadow” Imagine not being able to get your old birthday back, finding out all the teenagers in your town now have your birthday, getting back-stabbed by your ex gf, Sparta kicked off the White Cliffs of Dover, getting possessed, almost destroying your town while possessed, and then finding out that you're actually a sentient doll just like the person who saved you just over 3 years ago... all in the span of a few months!

You know, average magical girl shenanigans. At the age of 14.

Oh and here's Heulwen's 2025 magical girl form! Her design is based off a stained glass window in St Peter's Church in Sandwich and Lleu Llaw Gyffes, a hero of Welsh mythology from the Mabinogi.

Faces of Forsythia

Forsythia is the celestial being of maths. Many girls across different dimensions appear to have the same face as her. These girls are nicknamed the "Faces of Forsythia"…

It’s that time of year again where I do a redraw of an ultimate art piece of all my characters born on 25 July 2007 for lore reasons (and I also included Sorcha in this year’s illustration because more lore reasons :/ ). The original art from 2020 is lost media (thank goodness). This year, I now have After Effects so I can animate my art .. but I also accidentally made a 413MB gif when exporting my animated art so we still have a long way to go it seems.

Happy Pride Month! Here is my character Rosenwyn with Princess Serena, who is from the Cornish fairytale "The Lady of the Silver Bell"

Depending on the version you read and how you interpret the story, you could interpret Princess Serena as Aroace.

REMEMBER THAT YOU CAN HAVE A DIFFERENT INTEPRETATION FROM ME AND THAT’S OK.

Princess Serena could be greyromantic and greysexual in the older version by Anna Eliza Bray in ‘A Peep at the Pixies: Or, Legends of the West’ as Serena says ‘that neither he nor any other of her father's friends, were handsome enough to please her'.

Serena turns down a suitor 'that every body said how happy she would be as his wife.' The opposition that Serena faces for her decision not to marry her suitor reflects amatonormative beliefs, which many aromantic people face.

Based on the reading I have done on Victorian attitudes towards romance and marriage, the ideal for middle and upper class Victorian women was to be happily married with children. Princess Serena's lack of desire to marry is portrayed as 'her vanity' which Bray refers to as one of Serena's 'some very great faults'. This comes off as aphobic but is not surprising based on the time the book was published in.

When Serena sees a prince created by the Piskies, she experiences some form of attraction due to supernatural intervention. In this version, I would argue that she is greysexual and/or greyromantic. Even though she is attracted to the prince she focuses more on his possessions and wants to marry him so she can wear his tiara 'to bind around her own dark and flowing hair.

In Anna Chorlton’s version on the Mazed Tales website, Princess Serena turns down a suitor even though ‘he was perfect in every way’ and we could interpret Serena in this instance as Aroace. Furthermore, Serena’s vanity does not appear in this version and Serena's attraction to the prince created by the Piskies could be based on platonic attraction from the common ground of music and dance, which is emphasised at the start of this version.

Light disperses just like Forsythia’s face In Iteration 3 from Viviana we can trace Back to the original case…

There is a phenomenon where there are girls who are born with the face of Forsythia, the Celestial Being of Maths, in the Iterations. Not only do they share her face, but also her date of birth, her mannerisms and even a little bit of her power. Viviana Glynn is the face of Forsythia in Iteration 3… until she falls down a portal into Iteration 2, where she must work with her sister from another dimension to save herself, or at least her Iteration 2 counterpart. I’m going to slowly release more information about the “Faces of Forsythia” in the coming weeks. The Faces of Forsythia so far: Iteration 1 - ??? Iteration 2 - ??? Iteration 3 - Viviana Glynn Iteration 4 - ??? Iteration 5 - ??? It’s been about (checks the date of the original art) 4 YEARS since I’ve drawn a portrait Viviana!! OH YIKES! How time flies.

Blink and you'll miss her Calluna and wait… WHO is that? (She looks familiar… something to do with the “White Rabbit of Etruria”?) What do you mean Calluna didn’t always have pink hair? What happened? So many questions and no answers… All will be revealed when the time is right.

When you draw your ocs as characters from the Cornish fairytale "Elowen and the Bramble Bush" for the 1000th time... Featuring Willow as Prince Pascow! (I may or may not have made a sapphic inspired version of the story :D) (Ok so technically the earliest version of the fairytale is called "The Romance of Princess Olwen" but I think that's a story for another post where I ramble about Cornish folklore)
