Death’s Door ; selfwrite

It started with a twisting stab in the pit of his stomach,

an ice pick through the soft flesh of his abdomen, twisting up and up and up, until he could feel it’s point prick the underside of his weak heart. He fell to his knees then, hands shooting out just in time to stop himself from banging his head against the hard wood floor. Cheek against the cool floor, he lay there pathetically, every inch of his body submerged in an unbearable numbness. His wrist vibrated, his watch beeping and blinking, but he could barely move a fingers to shut it off. He didn’t want to spend his last moments listening to Ion, but the gods never blessed him before and they were not going to start now. Warning! Warning! Blood sugar low!

There it was. The first sign. He was stupid--The only thing that could save him was in Zon, more than a hundred years forward from this timeline. If only he had the foresight to stock up on the nearly ten bottles of supplements that sustained the entire population. He was going to wither away just when

he had found her.

Lungs collapsing.

He had met someone this far in the deteriorating process, but he couldn’t remember if they had survived--most likely not. Jae had never considered what it meant to...die. What it meant to realize that in ten minutes he’d be nothing more than a wheezing, pale lump of flesh that would melt into the carpet; a self defense protocol installed in the watch. Injected into the wrist, spread through the blood stream. Mush in thirty minutes, eaten by his dogs in ten.

The dogs--

Liver failing.

“No shit” Danny laughed out loud, eyes not even opening to look at whoever had just uttered that obvious comment. The deity stood in the midst of the rain shower, eyes shut and arms stretched out. He only wore a sweater that was long soaked and stuck to his body just like his hair and jeans, but all the singer could do was laugh. There was no rain in the underworld. Actually there was nothing but the moaning of tormented souls and a cold that could only burn anyone. And so the warm rain on earth was really a blessing, though after a while Danny’s arms got heavy and so he made his way over to the person still commenting on him. “I don’t really want to but fuck, my body feels heavy now.” The first thing to do was of course light a cigarette while checking out the male and especially the dog he had with him to which Danny crouched down to to pat it’s head.

Jae’s brain didn’t have time to catch up with his body; his hand moved without his consent and yanked the cigarette from between the man’s lips with the intend to put it out on his forehead, but of course he settled for the heel of his boot, not interested in causing a scene or starting a fight he was not interested in finishing. He detested smoking, especially because he had a numbing desire to do so.

❛❛ Don’t smoke around pets,❜❜ Jae grumbled, reaching down to scratch the back of Princeton’s ears. Love wasn’t the word he would use to describe what he felt for that beach ball, but in the last three weeks, he had become fond of the little orange ball. ❛❛They develop cancer faster than humans. ❜❜
