STICK TO THE PLAN NOT YOUR MOOD
This may sound preachy, but if you’re in your teens or 20s please take care to develop the habit of speaking positively about people behind their backs. Gossip is unavoidable, and yes it does allow people to bond, and yes some people deserve to be shit talked. But I think being negative about things is literally just nature, whereas trying to be positive about things and people is a quality you have to be very intentional about . If this does not apply to you, good for you. But for most people I think it does. Im not lauding toxic positivity so much as saying that if there’s space to speak positively about someone behind their back, it’s better to take that route.
Emotionally healthy people are quitters ✨
Emotionally healthy people are quitters. They make choices that align with their well being. Quitting a relationship, partnership or job that makes you unhappy is a sign of self awareness. If someone stays in something bad for too long, it's not because they're strong, but because they're afraid or have low self esteem. Being emotionally healthy means having awareness, setting boundaries, and knowing when it's time to move on from situations that no longer serve you. It's about prioritizing your mental and emotional health over sticking with something that's causing you harm or making you unhappy.
Emotionally healthy people also tend to have good communication skills. They express their feelings and needs calmly, openly and honestly. They also look for guidance and enlightenment because they understand that seeking help is a sign of strength not weakness.
They make decisions out of self love rather than attachment or fear. When you prioritize loving yourself, you make choices that align with your happiness and growth, rather than staying in situations out of comfort or insecurity.
Recognizing when you have an unhealthy attachment or that your feelings may not be conducive to your well being is important. It allows you to take a step back, evaluate the situation objectively, and make choices that are in line with your best interests.
Sometimes holding on can lead to more pain and struggle than necessary. It's a sign of emotional maturity to recognize when a situation is no longer good for you and to have the strength to let it go.
Things that are genuinely right for you should not cause you harm or emotional pain. Choosing pain is a sign of a lack of self love. Recognizing the need for change, prioritizing self love, and making healthier choices is how you begin to change your life.
Reframe your mindset from “this is hurting me because I love it” to “this is hurting me because I do not love me.”
I had to lock in on my masters program this semester, so I haven’t been able to post as much 😭I’m sorry for that. I take my board exams next summer so even this fall I’ll be locked in on that as well. I think it’s best to start studying for boards 6 months before. I love social media, but not more than my career.
international move: 🚂 1st stop, hair
Me and my stylist have been experimenting on different styles to wear as I’m moving somewhere with a colder, wetter, climate. I had to be realistic with myself about my hair texture, and the styles that I wanted overseas. There’s no way I could upkeep straight or wavy.
I made the decision to get bundles that match my natural hair to do a leave out sew in. We decided to do session 1/2 to see what we liked about this and what we want to change before the final install. After traveling the city we’re heading to, I realized how many people embraced their natural texture, so I chose to as well.
O.M.G. The amount of compliments I get! My stylist truly knew how to embody what I wanted. My mentor signed off on the style and said that it truly captured me in the best way. I trust the opinions of older black women over anyone else. Especially with me wanting to push for more in my career.
I did not spare any expense when it came to bundle prices. Many times good hair does cost more. I did shop around though, don’t get me wrong. But I quickly realized it was going to be a pretty penny. Like when I say, girls, I still can’t believe how it frames my face so well. My coworkers all asked where I got the hair and I DONT gatekeep. But of course, they kept bristling at the cost. Hundreds now saves you hundreds later.
Next time I’m absolutely leaving more hair out to be more versatile, but I’m glad she suggested a test pilot with this hair.
And most people would say, 4c is so hard! I literally get up, mist my hair with water, hand rake some moose and gel through my hair and I’m ready to go! I absolutely did lots of research on this hair before I got it, and realized quickly that 4c hair loves moisture.
I also researched products that interact well and define curls perfectly. I took my time for weeks researching this style. This actually led me away from black owned products, but I’ll explain that another time.
This hair is what picture is to me, valuing time. It’s forced me to make more time for self care, and to be more patient with myself. I’m really grateful for a stylist that was willing to explore with me, and those around me I trust that gave their honest commentary. ❤️
I’m here to say….if you’re not committed to getting extensions that match your hair texture, you’re doing yourself a disservice by trying to blend your hair with a texture that doesn’t match. Be realistic about your texture.
That said, unless you’re willing to cover your hair completely (wig) or do a chemical treatment to match the texture you’re using, you will be doing your real hair a disservice.
I want us all to explore different styles and etc. but take care of your hair. No wayyy you should be flat ironing your hair every day on HIGH HEAT to match silky tresses when your hair has more texture.
Trends will change as we get older, and sometimes you want to wear your natural hair. Don’t make it more difficult for future you!
The closer my international move gets, the more treatments I’m booking!
Can’t wait to give an overall update of what my beauty checklist is before a move!❤️❤️
