Her initial response was a pointed glare, if only because his response seemed to rub her the wrong way for this reason or that. Much like her previous answer, a hundred different responses and reasons seemed to push themselves into her head, some far more kind and yet some far more malicious. It was difficult to determine which to voice.
Any response, in truth, would cause some pang of hurt. Some, she knew, would cause more, though. In the end, she settled on one she deemed amongst the lesser of the evils.
“That’s not your business,” Carol told him, firm in its deliverance. And, in truth, it wasn’t. More so, she knew that the revelation of the truth would do nothing more than cause a rift between him and the person in which she spoke of.
Deep down, he knew he didn’t want to know. That it would only hurt him, that it would erase that part of him that maybe thought they could work it out. Hal knew that it was the only thing keeping him going on particularly rough days. So, it was better to not know, to keep guessing.
“Is it Kyle? Again?”
Damn his brain to mouth filter. Damn it! He knew that he should respect her and her privacy but he knew it’d eat him up from the inside. A never ending distraction that probably wouldn’t end until she either told him or he guessed it. Even though, yeah, he knew that it wasn’t anywhere near his business.
