location: the diner, around 6 pm.

it’s been a long day, and all eleanor can think about is a hot cup of coffee and greasy burger. after today’s shift at the clinic, just the thought of any sort of sustenance is enough to make her stomach growl. she hadn’t even changed out of her scrubs before wandering into the diner and sitting down at the counter. the blonde offered a warm smile to the person next to her as she glanced down at the menu. “what’s your favorite thing here?”

Sage offered a smile to Ellie. The girl had obviously just got off work, but she looked in good spirits. “A lot of people will tell you the burgers are the best here. I think the sheriff eats one everyday.” Sage leaned in closer as if she had some sort of deep secret to reveal. “But personally, I think the sweet potato fries are the best thing on the menu.” Sage didn’t eat at the diner a lot because she was trying to stay skinny but she had been ushered into the diner last time the fog had rolled around and they had been very nice to her. It was almost comforting to have the safety of the diner walls around her.

Open Starter

Aah didn’t normally go to the restaurants in town. They made him anxious. Being in public made him anxious. But he was feeling particularly good today. The Lady of The Forest seemed pleased with the latest lives she had took and maybe everyone would be safe, if just for a little while. To celebrate, Aah was having a drink at the Elk Antler Restaurant. He wasn’t supposed to drink with his medication, but that’s okay. He wasn’t taking those anyway.

Steve was sitting in his office and looking over the paperwork for the two “missing persons.” Samantha Shimizu and Roman Ridley. Both he knew full well had died in the fog and so did everyone else in this Godforsaken town. But paperwork was paperwork and America ran on a bunch of fucked up technicalities. He downed his coffee. Was this his fifth cup of the day? Didn’t matter. He wasn’t sleeping tonight anyway.

aah typically offered better conversation than the other locals. while aggie sometimes had trouble understanding what he was eluding to , she enjoyed trying to figure it out. aah made her think … harder and … different ; this was something few others could compel aglaia to do. responding to aah’s silent shushing , aglaia quieted and took time to listen for what he was speaking on.  after 10 seconds , aglaia heard nothing but birds and crickets chittering softly ; she took time to ponder ( why did the fog only take people ? ) . “ what exactly is this something that i should look out for ? “ aggie inquired. the woman believed whole-heartedly that anything was possible. often times , she was sure that something was actually talking to aah. she wondered if it would ever reach out to her , as well.

“the lady of the forest,” aah said simply. “she only talks to me because i’m more susceptible, i spend a lot of time listening. it’s easier if you’re...” schizophrenic? on the edge? he didn’t know what he meant. “open to possibilities.” he smiled at her, knowing she was one for openness. not many in this town were. that would be the downfall of more than one pine haven citizen. “she tells me she is satisfied with her meal. for now.”

STEVE

015. Are they most likely to fight with their fists or their tongue?

Steve is kind of terrible at talking. He can do the basics of conversation, but he takes two years to think up a new joke and even longer for a comeback. That being said, he isn’t particularly likely to fight with his fists either. Unless he’s really drunk and someone talks smack about Loretta.

057. Has your character ever killed anyone?

No, he hasn’t. He is aware that at some point as a police officer he might have to, but he won’t unless absolutely necessary and he lives in fear of the day it might become necessary.

068. How strong is your character’s sense of responsibility? What kinds of things trigger it?

Steve is pretty responsible in a lot of ways and he gives great advice. He’s not so great at taking his own advice. Though he is a hard worker and keeps his promises and honours his commitments he is prone to self neglect in areas like unhealthy eating and drinking and smoking too much.

SAMANTHA

020. What are their hobbies?

Bowling is her favourite hobby. As a child, she realized it was something she was good at and so she just kept doing it. She also has recently gotten into competitive eating.

053. What is your character’s greatest strength?

Her greatest strength is her ability to persevere above anything. She doesn’t take insults seriously. Setbacks in life don’t get to her for very long. She’s good at picking herself up again and trying again.

078. How emotionally stable is your character?

Samantha is one of my more emotionally stable characters. She does have some hidden resentment towards the cult and homophobic people. She mourns her mother, but can’t seem to fully process it even though it has been almost ten years.

SAGE

010. Do they believe in love at first sight?

Sage is a sucker for love at first sight. She doesn’t think it always happens, but she is sure open to the possibility. She finds the idea romantic and would love it for herself. It’s something she daydreams about sometimes.

043. What will they stand up for?

She isn’t sure yet. Sage is someone who is desperately looking for something to believe, something to comfort her. She hasn’t found what she’s looking for yet.

071. How kind is your character?

She is very kind when it’s easy to be kind. For example, she loves to share food with everyone and say positive things to them. However, if someone were to be bullied in front of her she probably wouldn’t stand up for them out of fear.

DREAM

029. What sort of sense of humor does your character have?

Dream has an absurd sense of humour. Bizarre memes are right up their alley. They also enjoy puns and childlike jokes. Some examples:

042. What is their greatest achievement?

They are still young and haven’t accomplished too many things yet other than graduating high school and being good at their job. But they consider keeping a certain secret as their proudest accomplishment. Can’t tell you what it is though, because that’s a secret.

093. What is your character’s goal in life?

Dream wants to fall in love, get married, and buy a farm where they own three goats that will mow the grass by eating it. Also, they would love to prove who the Zodiac Killer is and catch a ghost on film.

AAH

036. How honorable is your character?

This is a bit hard to answer because Aah considers himself honorable. He fights for the values he has and feels everything he does is for the greater good... of course, outside his head it becomes more clear that he often is not doing the right thing.

050. How does your character feel about their own mortality?

He feels yucky about it. Part of him is ready to die, and the other part is terribly afraid. He tells himself he won’t be scared when it’s time to go into the dark... but how can he know for sure?

096. How do they move and carry themselves? What energy do they project?

Aah is withdrawn but relatively calm when he is on medication. Right now he isn’t on medication and has a frenetic way about his movements. His hands shake and he’s always doing something with them, whether it’s playing with his hoodie strings or playing an imaginary piano.

Dream didn’t feel like going anywhere, but they especially did not feel like going home. It would only remind them that their mother was never going to be there ever again. Samantha’s mother had died of cancer when she was nineteen and Dream almost went to the bowling alley to visit her. But they didn’t feel up for bowling. So instead, they decided to go to the diner and eat some comfort food and hope no one looked at them too much. But surely everyone in town had heard about Claudia’s body by now. Sitting alone at the counter Dream ordered a hotdog and curly fries, which they were going to drown like their sorrows; in ketchup.

LOCATION: Haven Motel

Sage had been staying at the Haven Motel while her apartment got fumigated. So far, she wasn’t particularly a fan of it. There was something unsettling about the whole experience. She had come to the front desk to ask for more pillows, not that she was convinced she was sleeping at all tonight. Normally, Dream would have brought the pillows to her room, but they were off today. They had found their mother Claudia’s body and even thought Dream had suspected her mother was dead, knowing it was an entirely different story.

This guy’s creepy questions were not helping to settle Sage’s nerves or her stomach acid. You’re going to get an ulcer if you worry too much, she told herself. Which was of course, the opposite of helpful.

“You don’t really think that, do you?” she asked. Sage had been in Pine Haven for about a year, but it felt like an entire lifetime. Time didn’t pass the same way here it did everywhere else. Or maybe that’s just because her sleep was disturbed. “Then wouldn’t the rest of them be here? Claudia and Dottie and James and Max?” It was perhaps thin logic, but it made her feel just a little better.

“i’ve never done this before,” theresa d’avila’s voice was soft, gently lilting upward at the end in a way that made her every statement sound inquisitive; the gentle innocence that few could believe ( the world was forged of cynics, now ) but that in the case of the church’s lieutenant was entirely genuine. there were a great many experiences tess had never had the pleasure — or not, she was undecided — of having, and of late her curiosity had been permitting her to dip her toes in the water, as it were. she found the many bright lights and constant chatterings very loud and side-tracking, but she did her best to adjust her grip to something more efficient and comfortable, eyes bright with hope for better. “if you don’t mind, how should i do it?”

samantha was not usually one to talk to cult members on principle, but theresa was very pretty and samantha was very gay. the way theresa talked was enchanting if a little bit unsettling. “here let me show you.” sam grabbed her own ball and showed theresa how to hold it properly. “grip is the best thing to master first. then you just have to figure out how to aim. there’s posture, too. but i wouldn’t worry about that unless you were going to get competitive.” sam could use some new competition. as much as she loved winning, it was even more satisfying if there was a worthy opponent.

cas could never figure that man out. he always acted so strangely around him, but cas had come to just accept that he was a strange man. it didn’t occur to him, that maybe he was the cause of the even more than usual awkward tension between the two. he tried to be friendly, but this was always how aah reacted. he felt bad though, maybe he should have just started shopping at the other end of the store and let him go about his business. 

“no,” he sighed, “aah, it’s fine. i can just go to another place of the store. it’s okay, get your bread.” did he really just say conceal don’t feel out loud?

aah looked at cas’ face just for a second to gauge his sincerity. every instinct in him was telling him to run. but he was trying to be brave. he was a leader, a strong independent man, who didn’t need cas’ approval.

aah’s eyes fluttered away from cas’ beautiful, stoic face. “thank you,” he said mustering up the most mature voice that he could. “i’ll just have my bread and i’ll be on my way.” he nodded although he couldn’t look anywhere near cas and his hands were fiddling about nervously.

Pure disappointment sat on Andy’s face as he watched the ball go straight into the gutter once again. Normally he didn’t care for the activity, but he could use a mindless distraction right now – a break from coming up with theories about his hometown. He sighed lightly before responding, “You know what I think, we should reinvent bowling. Watching the ball slowly roll towards the pins – boring, not super eventful. But yeeting the ball down the lane – new, exciting, unpredictable. Plus, if I yeet the ball I bet my grip doesn’t really matter.”

Samantha smiled at Andy. “Sounds like a bunch of excuses to me!” She didn’t throw slowly. She yeeted strategically. Samatha took a ball. “Watch. I’ll show you how it’s done.” She took a moment to show him how she was holding the ball before she threw it swift and hard, just slightly to the right of the center pin, knocking all the pins down. “See? It doesn’t have to be slow.”

Steve was sitting in the restaurant creatively named “The Diner” waiting for Charlie to join him for lunch. That didn’t matter to Steve. He was never really a creative guy. He considered himself practical, reliable, sturdy. He maybe didn’t have the pizzazz of some of the big city boys but he was comfortable with him small town life. He was comfortable with the people around him and eating the same diner food most days. The burgers here were the best in town. Sometimes he’s go to the Elk Antler Restaurant if he wanted steak. But he was supposed to lay off that kind of stuff anyway. Steve would just order a classic burger, fries, and a coke. Ruby wouldn’t be pleased, but a man could hardly starve himself. That is when Charlie met him. It was rude to order before your company had arrived.

2.  Do they do anything to celebrate their birthday?

He drinks. A lot. Preferably alone, unless someone (maybe Charlie or Rory) drags him out of the house), in which case he will begrudgingly agree.

21.  How do they display affection?

Not very well! He tends to display affection with jokes. But he’s not very good at making jokes, so he tends to repeat the same ones over and over again. He also tries to be there for the people he cares about. Physically. Emotionally, is probably too much for him.

41.  Are they comfortable with technology?

He’s generally pretty good at technology for an old guy. Doesn’t mean he doesn’t complain about the computers at the police station routinely. He does enjoy having a cell phone and is fairly computer literate.

SAMANTHA

67.  Does your character believe in fate or destiny?

Samantha doesn’t believe in fate or destiny. She thinks that the choices people make is what affects outcomes and nothing is predetermined or meant to be.

81.  Is your character religious?

No. She was put off religion because the main two religions she’s been exposed to are Christianity (not always known for supporting the LGBTQIA+ community) and Our Lady of the Forests Church which seems pretty crazy and is rumored to be into human sacrifice. Because of this she tends to have negative feelings towards religion.

Competitive, passionate, willful.

SAGE

100.  Does your character dream? If so, what do they dream about?

Sage has a lot of dreams, most of them of the scary variety. She distinctly remembers a fish with a human eye showing up in her dreams. A lot of her dreams take place in the woods. Sometimes when she wakes up she’s really in the woods.... Sometimes she has dreams where she walks into the fog, hand in hand with Aah.

88.  Is your character quiet or loud?

Sage is quiet! She’s she and she likes to record her videos because she can prepare what to say in advance. She has social anxiety and her brain tends to panic and work slow during conversations. She is terrified to interrupt someone, so in group conversations she doesn’t say much.

She keeps her promises, no matter what. At least so far in her life. She values honesty and if she gives you her word she has full intentions of falling through with it.

40.  What is their obsession?

The television show Unsolved Mysteries.

20.  What are their hobbies?

Collecting bugs, reading (books about philosophy as well as unsolved mysteries and conspiracy theories on the internet), watching youtube videos, listening to podcasts, and writing in their blog. They also enjoy “people watching” which some might think is akin to spying...

9. Do they believe in happy endings?

They do! Dream likes to believe that they are going to have a happy ending and their hope is stronger than their fear.

92.  What emotion does your character evoke in others?

Above all, Aah evokes discomfort. Most people are unsettled by his presence. He is physically awkward and agitated and it only gets worse when he opens his mouth to speak. Conversely, those close to Aah can sometimes be comforted by his presence, perhaps because they too know what it feels like to be different. And he offers a new vision, something to live for, a meaning... If you’re into that sort of thing.

Aah’s first reaction to change is panic. He does not adapt well to change at all. It’s a definite trigger for his psychosis.

In most situations, being touched disgusts him. A lot of things that most people find disgusting don’t bother Aah (for example spiders, gore, dead things, etc.)

Samantha spent a lot of time at the bowling alley. Technically, her work week was forty hours (her boss would be damned to pay her overtime) but it was also the place she felt most comfortable. The familiar scents and sounds comforted her. And besides, she had to practice constantly. She would die if she were to lose her edge.

She wasn’t working now, but still when she saw someone throw a gutter ball, she just had to put her nose in. “It’s your grip that’s screwing you up,” she said to the other.

there were decisions that cas has made in his life. some were bad, some were good, and some were just so bizarre and neutral that they could only be described as decisions. one of them having been five years ago after he lost colton, he was a wreck and looking for someone to spend the night with, just someone to fill his bed to make it warm and less lonely. he was drinking, and aah wasn’t unattractive by any stretch of the imagination, so one thing led to another. the problem was, that it didn’t mean much to cas, it was just again, a way to spend the night away. now? aah couldn’t meet his gaze. 

which is what running into each other in the bakery section of the general store made this so awkward. “hi, aah,” cas greeted like a normal human, “how are you doing?”

aah didn’t always think of cas. he mostly tried not to.  usually there were other scary thoughts occupying his mind in the middle of the night. aah could fill his brain with all sorts of things. the fog. sacrifices. the voices in the woods. the voices in his head. but when aah came face to face with cas, all bets were lost. all the feelings came back. some good, some bad, mainly sexual.

he tired not to look into cas’ eyes. or at his face. certainly not on his body. oh, and now he was thinking of cas’ body. that was the last thing he needed to tihnk about now. or ever.

“conceal, don’t feel,” aah muttered to himself under his breath.

“never mind,” aah said. “i don’t need bread. i’ll just leave.”
