“Well I didn’t realize it would get your britches in this much of a twist!” Dan says as he throws his hands up in the air.
“You could’ve at least told me! I had no idea I was gonna run into her, and now shes just working here? On the farm? When did that happen?” You say with a hand on your hip.
“Shes been working at the farm here and there for years… I only officially hired her a couple days ago to do everything because I cant anymore. Doc’s orders.” He said gruffly. “Why are you so angry about this? You and Abby were joined at the hip for 18 years.”
Your heart clenches but you ignore it. Instead, you give Dan a look.
“It’s not like that anymore. I told you.” You say.
“Well that’s a damn shame.” He responds. Your cheeks burn and you can’t bear to let Dan see you get more worked up than you already are. You turn away from him to tend to dinner on the stove.
“C’mon are you that mad at me?” Dan asks from his seat at the dining room table.
“No… Im not mad.” You sigh, a little softer in your reply. “You couldn’t have found anybody else?” You ask, facing him again.
“I watched her grow up. She’s responsible. I wont trust just anyone with this place, you know that.” He says. You think for a moment.
“Well what about me huh? I’m here now. I can pick up where you left off.” You say waving your wooden spoon in the air as you talk.
Dan scratches the back of his neck. “Well… you’re not really the heavy liftin’ type my dear.” He says sheepishly. You shoot him a glare.
“You could let me try!” You protest. You knew deep inside he was right. There was no way you could do all that work by yourself. But you were stubborn. Way too stubborn to just let this go.
Dan surrenders. “Go ahead and try then. I’m not stopping you, but im not firing Abby.”
“You mean not yet.” You say with a smirk. “Don’t worry I’ll whip this farm into shape. Way better than Abby ever could.” You say as you set his plate of dinner in front of him. “Then, we won’t need her anymore and we can send her packing.” You kiss his cheek and walk away to get ready for bed. Dan shakes his head and sighs.
The next morning you were excited. You were going to show Dan you could take care of everything all by yourself. The last thing you wanted was to have to see Abby everyday. You couldn’t wait to get rid of her smug face, and her dumb hat, and her stupid boots, and her long hair, and her eyes…
You shake your head as if your brain was an etch-a-sketch and shaking it would erase the images inside. It didn’t.
You tie your hair back and put on one of Dan’s baseball caps to keep your head from burning. Today looked like a rare sunny day in Washington. You find your old work-boots in the back of your closet. They still fit like a glove.
The sun beats down on your cheeks as you set out onto the farm. You walk into the barn with confidence. You had woken up early so you could feed the animals. You were ecstatic to see the look on Abby’s face once she saw the animals happy and fed, roaming about the farm before she even got there.
You pick up two bags of feed from the storage shed and lug them into the sheep’s pen. You throw them down in exhaustion as you look over the sheep. There were more than you remembered, but that was years ago. One in particular looks very young. He stares at you blankly, chewing a piece of grass in his mouth. You feel his judgmental eyes burning into you as you struggle to carry the bags of feed (that were probably twice your body weight) to the trough.
Before you can empty the feed into the trough, you gasp as you hear it rip open from the back. It spills all over the floor around you. You go silent, eyes wide as you look around the pen. The sheep stood for a moment, blankly staring at you. Maybe they hadn’t noticed? You thought to yourself for a moment.
Sheep bolt towards you in a frightening cloud of fluff, knocking you onto your back to get to the feed. You yelp, feeling the air leave your lungs as you hit the ground. The sheep munch happily on their food, the youngest one bleats at you. Almost like a taunt. You groan.
Amidst the sounds of chaos, you hear laughter.
Laughter too young to be Dan’s, but too familiar to be a stranger. You sit up, your cheeks burning red the instant you see her.
Abby’s gravelly laugh echoes throughout the pen. She has her arms crossed against her chest, and her face has become slightly pink from her laughter. She shakes her head as her chuckles die down.
“If I hadn’t known you since preschool I’d think you had never stepped foot on a farm a day in your life! Much less raised on one!” She chuckles.
You huff as you stand up. “And why are you here so early?” You ask, a sharpness to your words as you place a hand on your hip. You try to ignore your embarrassment, and the mud all over your jeans.
“I’ve been here since dawn. Livestock has been fed already. But knock yourself out.” Abby says, still chuckling to herself as she walks away. Heat envelopes your face and the tips of your ears turn red. Your fist clenches and you kick up some hay in frustration.
The young sheep looks up at you. He bleats at you one more time, as if to add salt to the wound. Then he goes back to enjoying his delicious meal that is sprawled out across the pen floor. A mess that you would have to clean up now.
You were still determined, and when you went back to the house later that night, you set your alarms for before dawn. You were going to get Abby off the farm, even if it was the last thing you do.
If you are still reading these you are a real one and I appreciate you. Apologies for the wait again! Thank you so much for reading :)
