Flowers from Apothecary Diaries intro
The first opening song for The Apothecary Diaries is "Hana ni Natte" (花になって, "Be a Flower") by Ryokuoushoku Shakai.
Once when I was in undergrad, someone described something as “problematic” in class and our professor was like, “That’s cool, but ‘problematic’ doesn’t really mean anything. It means that the thing you’re describing has a problem, and in and of itself that’s not bad. Art, especially, should always have problems, or else it’s not interesting and not art, either. It sounds like you’re trying to say that this is bad, but you don’t want to say ‘bad.’ Is that right?”
So from then on whenever one of us called something problematic, he would make us talk it out until we could name the “bad” thing we were hinting at. In this particular class, 7/10 it was some type of oppression, and the remainder was like, “I’m uncomfortable because this is very new/confusing/pushing boundaries that made me feel safe.”
Once we stopped calling things “problematic” and stopping at that, class got way more interesting and... we all had to say, like, “that’s racist” or “that’s misogynistic” or “ew capitalism gross” out loud, which a lot of us had never done in a classroom before. Or we had to be like, “Uhhh... I’m not sure what’s so bad?” and confront our own beliefs and that was maybe even more useful.
Anyway. Whenever I see the word problematic, I can’t help but think of this professor being like, “Good starting point, now let’s get specific.” I think when we have to commit to saying “that’s ___” it requires a lot more careful thought about the truth and impact and complexities of whatever we’re claiming. Sometimes there really is some bullshit afoot, and also sometimes it’s art, and it should be full of problems, because that’s what art is.
In regard to the sharp uptick of drunk blogging on this blog this year:
The American healthcare system is a mess. Doctors tend to underestimate chronic pain, particularly in young women. Apparently, there's an opioid crisis in my area, which means you get prescribed extra-strength Tylenol if they cut you up and move one of your vertebrae. Can it still be called a "crisis" for five years running? However, edibles I don't want to get a vape if I went to a medical facility, what form would the cannabis take? They're not going to prescribe smoking to someone with a history of breathing problems, currently medicated for her reaction to smoke inhalation, are they? Surely there's at least a tincture.
Sorry, I got off-topic for a moment there, but I think it illustrates my point.
I was cut open, had tissue removed, then sewn back up with 0 pain killers, local anesthetic only. When it wore off, just a few hours later, I was in so much pain that I nearly threw-up. I was told to take Tylenol. 😒
I have a history of liver damage (childhood), I should not take Tylenol. No other options.
I took Tylenol. It did not help even a little. I report this, am told there is nothing else to try medication-wise. Maybe use an ice pack. Risking additional liver damage for no reason. Cool.
The ice pack was uncomfortable and didn't help either. I do not have a history of addiction. I've broken bones and never asked for pain medication. This hurt worse. By a lot.
When it was time to remove the pressure bandage and clean the wound, it hurt with such burning intensity that I almost passed out. Then I almost threw-up again. I had to take a Zofran because the act of hoarking would have only hurt more.
Nothing they can do. In 5 days, I can try adding Ibuprofen. The bandage must be changed 2x a day and the wound cleaned. It hurts unbearably every time. I add Ibuprofen to my Tylenol regimen and this also doesn't help.
Some utensil during my surgery hadn't been properly sterilized. I developed a life-threatening, treatment-resistant bacterial infection, in the wound (under the sutures). The pain was exquisite. No additional pain relief was offered.
I was given an antibiotic with a blackbox label. If you're unfamiliar that means the side effects are potentially life-altering and life-threatening, but it's the only medication my strain of infection is susceptible to, and I will die if the infection isn't treated, so, yolo I guess.
The bacteria ate my flesh. I could feel this on top of the other pain the entire time. It felt like fire. My wound fully reopened. Slowly, painfully. No pain medication offered. I had to go back in to have dead skin cut out of the wound, so that it could heal. Local anesthetic only.
There wasn't enough skin left to re-close the surgical site. So they packed it with gauze. I'd have to endure an open wound healing now. Which would hurt more, take longer to close. No pain medication.
Everyday we had to pull the gauze out of the wound, clean it, then pack more gauze into the hole. This hurt, as you can imagine, more than words could do any justice. "You can take up to 3 Tylenol at a time if needed." It didn't help.
The antibiotic caused tears in the tendon that holds my kneecap in place. I dislocated my knee, just walking. That also hurt, as in the process it sheered straightthroughthe cartilage, bone grinding against bone now. I couldn't use my right leg, at all, for at least a month. No pain medication, just ice and Ibuprofen that didn't help.
After a year, my surgical site finally closed up, though it still hurts sometimes. My knee still isn't right. I'm in extensive physical therapy for it -- the quadriceps is completely paralyzed on one side and there's pain whenever I bend my knee which is its entire job. Awesome.
A third of my diet is Ibuprofen at this point (which is distressing my gastroenterologist), but at least they can rest assured that I can't sell a stronger medication if they prescribed it on the streets, I guess. 🙄
This is the state of American healthcare. Doctors refuse to prescribe any manner of pain relief that can't be bought at a CVS right off the shelf. Every time I see a person from the UK say, "You all shouldn't be taking so much Tylenol/ Ibuprofen!" Like. I need you to know it's all we can get.
I know of people with cancer related pain who don't yet qualify for hospice (nonterminal/haven't exhausted all treatment options/don't have insurance) who are going to methadone clinics for pain relief. It's that bad.
one time we were listening to fleetwood mac in the car and my sister who was probably 4 at the time asked, without being prompted, “can girls marry girls?” and THAT is the power of stevie nicks
