oops
“Aye–-”
He has no reason to answer—what ever this is. But, he does, brows high, and nerves shaky. Was this some type of spirit, or demon? It seems entirely too calm for that. Hands stay from his blade in hopes of gaining more information.
“And you—what are you? A spirit?”
↠ Communication. Sentience. Patient enough to at least ask what the little Ghost is. Perhaps friendly. They dared to float a little closer, slowly; don’t want to startle someone who must already be on edge. ↤
“ A spirit? ”
↠ What a funny term. The Cabal have called the Ghosts Dead People, a translation that amuses them to no end. ↤
“ I suppose that could work too, though the official term is ‘Ghost.’ My name is Anubis. ”
↠ Another joke, a whim that their Guardian had and stuck. Anubis. A god associated with death and the afterlife, and yet here they are, giving life to the willing dead. Too bad such irony will most likely go over this human’s head. ↤
Violet eyes scan over the small form in their grasp, held between taloned fingers. They narrow a moment after, before a rather sickening chuckle manages to escape between the many fangs that lined their jaws.
“For what reason would I want you to do that? The Tower and the Vanguard are no allies of mine, why should I let you go and tell them that this is where I reside now, hm? Your Guardian is like many before them. They will be forgotten regardless of your return. Marked off as missing in action. Even if you tell the Vanguard, your Guardian will be nothing more than a name on an ever expanding list of those who failed in their second life.”
Zara’s own Ghost floats in silence for a long while, though once their corrupted Guardian has finished speaking, there’s an ever so soft hum that resounds. It’s a noise of pity, and the only one they make before vanishing once again.
“Ah, look at that. We have similar opinions hm? I should make this easy on you and simply tear you apart, little Ghost. I can do a number on Guardian armor, I doubt your shell would stand a chance.”
↠ This isn’t about you! They wanted to shout, to scream and do the damage their Guardian once dealt. But as the larger being went on, they saw the truth in their words; how many lost Guardians had gone forgotten, regardless of if their Ghost returned? Only the ones that made an impact were missed, and the Light that was just snuffed out? A spark beside a sun. Perhaps seen, but ignored.
( If they could cry, they would have. )
The other Ghost, so dim, so quiet, disappeared. Their wings slumped like shoulders, already blaming themself for not being more stern about keeping safe. She just blew them off and dove back in. They should have said something else, done something more. She’s gone, gone, nothing more than bones and armor and maybe not even that anymore. ↤
“ I don’t want to die.. ”
↠ Their voice, soft, quiet. This could be it. Two Lights destroyed barely an hour apart. There have been shorter time spans, they know, but they wished it wasn’t something that had to occur so soon. Too soon; she was brought back only half a century ago. Amber optic raised to the blank helmet above them. ↤
“ Are you going to kill me? ”
Blade finds its proper place at his back once the small skirmish has ended, and a quick glance about shows no causalities to their own, and very few injuries. A well fought victory, however small. There is a break in their advancement while they regroup; bodies of darkspawn looted, their own baggage given a once over to ensure nothing is missing. Carver allows himself some distance from the others, to scout and make sure no others intended on catching them with their trousers down, so to speak.
It is only when he rounds the corner of a particularly large boulder does gut tell him something else is near. Friend, or foe, Carver is unsure, but way out here he assumes it to be the latter. Blade stays its place at his back, too worried it may make a noise if he were to brandish it. And then:
“…I know you’re there.”
Such an odd voice, as though it were amplified. Brows grow taugh at their middle, and Carver steps out. “Are you a bandit, robbing a Warden might turn sour for you—” and he stops, hues finally falling on the small—orb that hovers high.
What is this?
↠ Amber optic blinked as the human stepped out from cover, feeling their shell click and shift. Strange armor, the shadows playing oddly across the chest plate. Something rising from over his shoulder -- a pommel? Is that what it’s called? Suddenly their new company was much more interesting than the bodies below them.
Another click, another moment, before they dared to try anything else. This human looks confused, and people have been known to attack what they don’t understand. Take it slow, careful. Listen for any more blips, any others that might have followed after this one.
Speak. A soft crackle, an electronic whir as their shell shifted, corrected itself. ↤
“ ...Hello. I’m assuming it’s you who did this? ”
@a-warden
↠ A fight nearby, a mess of clicks and blips on their proximity tracker. Shouts, roars, but no gunfire. Instead it sounded like.. like.. The little Ghost had no sure word for it, nothing in their memory archives that could suggest a name. The blips and clicks quickly diminished and the sounds somewhere ahead diminished. The world grew quiet and the little light paused in their curious journey, listening.
A small group ahead, they decided. Human, maybe? They gave off different signals than those back on Earth. Awoken?
Those ahead are moving on and ANUBIS followed after them, floating low over the ground, careful to keep enough distance that they hopefully wont be spotted. And then they saw the bodies. Dark, twisted creatures, something akin to Thrall at the very least. Amber light cast down at them, brief beams that covered the expanse of the bodies. Then they moved on to another one, casting the light onto the ground beside it, studying it. Scratches dug into the dirt by something - sharp? Not the right shape for a bullet.
A blip on proximity. The beam stopped, amber gaze flicking up where the disturbance sat, hidden. Human. Possibly hostile. The little Ghost slowly lowered closer to the ground, reminding themselves that there’s no transmat here, no Guardian they can escape to. Be careful, careful, prepare an escape route. They stared, then finally spoke up, amplifying their voice a little. ↤
“ ...I know you’re there. ”
Zara stops not at the question posed. Another Ghost? A smile pulls at the corners of their twisted maw but it is not malicious in nature. This grin is a fond one, and hidden behind the confines of their helmet. The Dark Guardian’s companion was the most dear thing to their metaphorical heart. They look over their shoulder, down the tunnel, then back to the little light trapped between their fingers.
“Yes, there is another Ghost here. Most don’t notice, their Light is so little in comparison to what it once was.” Speaking of the Light pulled at something in them, at the warmth that one flooded their body of flesh and bone and blood and sinew so long ago. Centuries, ago.
A soft hum sounds from the back of their throat, a finger tapping against the shell in their grasp. After a moment of debate with the Ghost hidden away from sight, the dark construct appears over their left shoulder. Its optic has a crack running through it, a now almost blind eye looking down at the amber one that produced a light that was almost blinding. “They don’t speak, not anymore.”
“They also want me to bring you to the surface, though I’m not sure if I really have any obligation to do so.”
↠ Their shell shifts, wings clicking to the side in curiosity. Amber optic blinking, flicking to the finger tapping against their shell. Waited. Kept track of the beings that shuffled and shifted in the space beyond this little nook, this little hallway.
Gaze shifted again and the Ghost allowed a soft sound, a greeting to the other. So dim. Another noise, a chirp, concerned, questioning. So maybe they other can’t speak, but perhaps they can still emit sound? There’s more than one way for Ghosts to communicate, after all.
No obligation to help. They faltered, a lapse in their processing core, a blink. It’s true. This being has no reason to do anything for the little Ghost. So they panicked, barely even deciding on what should be said before it was spilling out, a jumble of words just a touch too loud. ↤
“ Please! You have to! I need to get back to the Tower and alert the Vanguard! I can’t stay here! I can’t let my Guardian go forgotten! Please! ”
↠ A blip on their proximity tracker, a warning that a few Hive are moving this way. Either on a patrol or drawn in by the voices, it hardly matters at this point. ↤
Ikora had seen many Ghosts during her time as a Guardian, though most interactions with them had occurred during her time as a Vanguard - useful, as she continued in that line of work. Being able to read the nonverbal tells of Ghosts as well and as easily as Guardians came in handy when they spoke to her or her own.
It was quite plain to see, then, that this one was bothered before they even spoke of the cause. Just how bothered would not be apparent until they did…and then she understood that it ran deep, and why. The words repeated in her mind one, two, three times until she finally grasped it: This Ghost had lost their Guardian, and the Tower had lost a brilliant Light. She hesitated for a moment before speaking, treading carefully.
“I am…sorry, little one,” she remained soft, although an undertone of sadness replaced the happier one she’d had moments before. “What a terrible loss.” And so another Guardian is lost to the Hive. Ikora was sick of having to send students down into the infestation, only to watch with the others over a signal feed as they were mutilated and permanently killed. The Tower had come so far in its knowledge of Hive and how to fight them, and still they persisted so terribly that casualties occurred - among immortals, no less. So very frustrating.
“If you seek to update Cayde, I am not sure when he will return.”
↠ They waited through her silence, amber gaze hesitantly dropping to the floor; it’s hardly fair to give such news on a night as calm as this. But it’s urgent, they know, that the Vanguard knows about it. There could have been a better way to say it, a better way a better way. Look, ANUBIS, you’ve upset her. See how she softens, how her hard edges curve, sag. You should have waited, should have thought out a better way to break the news. Too late.
Their gaze flicks back to the Warlock with a nod, acknowledging the sentiment. ( Can’t help but wonder, however, if it’s genuine. How many other Ghosts have heard that as well? Such a loss isn’t exactly rare, nor the first time it’s happened. )
Perhaps they should feel sad with Ikora, should feel something other than this disconnect, this strange empty spot beside them that was once filled with Light and Light and Light, fierce, powerful, pointed like a spearhead and hurled at potential executioners. ↤
“ I can find him eventually, thank you. I suppose that now, though, I’m at your service. ”
↠ Yours and everyone else’s. That doesn’t need to be said, they think. ↤
@forthetraveler
↠ The Traveler. Its Light was refreshing, a relief after the time spent in the Dark. A moment allowed to pause, to take in the view of the City, their home. ( A much better view than the Hive caves, by any means. )
They could almost feel the ebb and flow of Light in their circuitry, see it as Guardians passed by below them, down in the courtyard. They watched as those bright sparks flickered and fluttered, yet still as powerful as lightning bolts. It’s different, being separated from it. Before, the shift and ebb was hardly noticeable in the Light of their own Guardian. Now, there’s a type of disconnect, their own Light separate from the others, from the paired Guardians and ghosts.
Another ghost passed by them, pausing long enough so that they could acknowledge their losses, before parting. That was more than enough to stir the newly solitary ghost into action, and they made their way to the one who most needed to know about what happened. Out around the Tower, skipping the hallways and twists and turns. Flew in through the large window, slowing to a halt before his desk. Cast a quick nod, a greeting, to the other ghost already present, as they spoke up. ↤
“ Excuse me if I’m interrupting. Do you have a minute? ”
❂ >>> “ A GHOST? ”
Hux wrinkles his nose some, unsure of what to make of this. He had never seen anything like this before. But surely something was lost on him–this thing was most certainly some sort of odd looking droid.
“ Where are you from then? ”
“ Where are you from? ”
↠ A snappy response, a habit gained from their Guardian and still not quite kicked. Rude, rude, be nice! Their single amber optic dropped to the floor, then back up, the wings of their shell lifting as interest, curiosity took hold.
( Casually just doesn’t answer the question. ) ↤
“ Are you human? ”
A soft laugh leaves them and they don’t answer. Not yet. The movements have drawn the attention of the Thrall that littered the area and they were watching rather curiously. Zara keeps the grasp around the Ghost and moves up the tunnel, glancing down to the little light between their fingers.
“With my mouth, of course. How do you talk?” Sarcasm laces itself into their speech, eyes straying from them for a moment to look at the tunnel’s walls. Zara takes a left, continuing, “Did you think I was one of the Hive? They can talk too, though I doubt anyone who hasn’t studied them would know that.”
Shoulders rise in a shrug at the end of their sentence, violet eyes falling back down to the little prisoner. The sounds of Hive echo off the walls in the area and it really only sounds like strange screaming and odd noises. Zara can hear voices, commands issued and plans being made. Ideas being strewn about and shot down or praised. The Hive language was not complicated but it did take time to learn fully, and a sense of pitch and length to which a sound was being made. They still thought it all sounded too loud for their tastes.
↠ They went still as their captor moved, took them.. someplace else. These caves and caverns twisted and turned, throwing off their navigation. That didn’t, however, stop them for trying to keep track anyway. Keep track, keep track, find your way back. Safety in knowledge, in sure facts. Yes, safe. Safe safe safe. It’ll be okay if they just know. Know what their Guardian didn’t, kept themselves safe. So much for that. Added the new route to the journey already made, to the beeline that sprawled out behind them.
No response to their sarcasm, just a stare; still too close to take another risk at raising unnecessary attention. Unwanted attention. Amber light glowing faintly against their captor’s fingers, like a small ember, small enough to pose the threat of going out. ( Soon, perhaps. )
Their gazes met once more, breaking when the ghost’s gaze flicked away, up to the ceiling, to the corners of their shell, listening. At first, they didn’t want to hear. Didn’t want to record the details and pitches of any more of the Hive than they had to. Their shell twitched, though, as they caught a pattern. Certain words or letters that the larger being had already learned to recognize, incomprehensible to the smaller. They had no desire to remain here until that changes. Fine with it remaining as shrieks and snarls.
They listened, tracked scattered patterns and deleted the sounds still drifting from where the former Guardian fell. Cringed. While they searched, deleted, they picked up something. A spark. A light! No. A Light. Not their captor’s, but smaller, like theirs. ANUBIS blinked, shell twitching, shifting in their prison. Not alone! Not alone! ↤
“ What is that? Is that another Ghost? ”
—– ❂>> @pinpointglow | starter call (accepting!) <<❂
“ I am not entirely sure I am familiar with what kind of DROID you are.. ”
↠ They didn’t move at first, hoping that maybe, maybe he didn’t see them. A moment passed and the ghost blinked, realizing that no, they didn’t duck and hide quick enough. ↤
“ ...I.. I’m a Ghost. Not a droid. ”
"Yes, I did beat him up and I will not apologise."
{ !! } - accepting
↠ A soft noise, electronic, disapproving. Their front wings drew downward, as if glaring at the Exo, amber glow only adding to the effect. ↤
“ You should rethink that. It’s not wise to let grudges fester. ”
