Ambrose of Milan, 4th century: “Maker of all things, God most high Great Ruler of the starry sky! Who, robing day with beauteous light, Hast clothed in soft repose the night...”
A short tale in storybook vintage style, trying to capture the dot-printed, off-register look of old comics
Yesterday one of my all-time favorite musicians, Glen Campbell, died. I'm not a big country guy, but his earnest, heartfelt style connected very deeply with me when I first heard "Wichita Lineman" years ago, and seeing him live was one of my favorite concert experiences. If you haven't heard him, check out "Wichita Lineman" or "Country Boy" (or, if you're okay with 90s production vibes, "The Boy In Me"). His death hit me pretty hard, but I'm so thankful his battle with Alzheimer's is over and that he was a man whose hope was in going to be with Jesus, free of pain and sorrow.
THE MARVELOUS DONUT There was once a donut which, by incredible circumstance, contained upon its surface a topographic map of the California coastline, wrought in icing and glaze. It was placed within an unassuming donut shop located in a minimall in LA’s San Fernando Valley, whereupon this accidental masterpiece was picked out from a fluorescent-lit glass case and promptly eaten without a second’s thought by a 9-year-old kid.
