Even over the phone, Piper can hear the pure joy in her best friend’s voice. She can hear the tears, too, and on any other occasion she would’ve teased him mercilessly about it. But Piper felt the tears welling in her own eyes, too.
“I told you! Pete, I told you!” She squealed, grinning largely. She felt like a proud mom watching her son graduate. She had seen Peter go through hell and back so many times, and she always rooted for him. And now there they were.
“Yeah... I was so nervous. I didn’t really think he’d say no but it was still so nervewracking...”
Piper nodded along, even though Peter couldn’t see her. She sat down on her bed and excitedly pulled her knees to her chest. With every word Peter spoke, she found herself growing more and more elated for him. Piper had always thought marriage was bullshit and unnecessary, but she knew it was right for Peter.
“Pete... Pete, I am so happy for you.” She whispered through her tears.
“Oh my god, Piper Fritz, are you actually crying right now?”
“Shut up!” She exclaimed. She made for a pillow before realizing Peter wasn’t actually sitting there for her to throw one at him. “You asshole. Yes, I’m crying!” She glowered at the sound of Peter’s laughter.
“Stop or you’re going to make me cry, monster.”
“I’m just-” Piper shrugged and wiped at her eyes with an incredulous laugh. “Babe, I’m so happy for you. Everything that you’ve gone through...” She paused as she reflected on everything that happened between the two of them and Peter individually. “You deserve this, Peter. You really fucking do.”
“I love you, Pipes.” A brief pause, “You know you’re going to be my best man, right?”
“Fuck yes. I’m honored. Hey, does this mean I can wear a suit?”
