realized while writing in my origins fic backlog that the only time oscar is genuinely having a great time during the giants plotline is when he learns about skystones at cutthroat carnival, gets happy and excited and good at it really fast bc he's played competitive pokemon TCG, and comes out of that part of the adventure with like 5 different plushies he singlehandedly won and carrying the group the whole way through that part of the game

Bruno’s workshop was alive. Not metaphorically. Literally. Gears clicked on their own. Clockwork pets skittered across the floor. A kinetic window flickered between weather patterns, magical readings, and a diagram of a toaster Bruno had been “improving” for three months.

He was in the center of it all, goggles on, hair a mess, muttering to himself as he welded something that looked like a cross between a grappling hook and a blender. “Okay, okay, okay. If I reroute the flux coil through the stabilizer, it’ll stop exploding. Probably. Maybe. Eh, fifty‑fifty.”

A small metal crab wandered by, chirping. Bruno pointed at it without looking. “Not now, Clamps. Daddy’s working.”

The crab chirped again and walked into a wall. Bruno didn’t notice. He was in his element—tinkering, building, bouncing between ideas like a pinball. Half‑finished inventions littered every surface. Some hummed. Some sparked. One was smoking. He didn’t notice that either.

What he did notice, very belatedly, was the sound of someone clearing their throat. Sprocket stood in the doorway, and she looked horrified. Her eyes swept across the workshop—the clutter, the unstable prototypes, the half‑wired contraptions, the tools scattered everywhere, the blueprint taped to a clockwork dog’s back—and she visibly fought the urge to scream.

“…Bruno.”

He didn’t look up. “Hey, Sprocket! Check this out—I’m inventing something that’ll revolutionize fieldwork. It’s a multi‑tool grappler‑stabilizer‑snack‑dispenser. I think. Haven’t decided yet.”

Sprocket stepped inside, dread pooling in her stomach. “Bruno, half of these things are dangerous.”

“They’re only dangerous if you turn them on!”

“They’re on.”

Bruno blinked, finally glancing around. “Oh. Huh. Neat.”
