#hyacinthsgirl is my biggest hobby... and my greatest fear.
I want to take a heaping batch of #angry pirate noises and spread it all over me like I’m that peanut butter baby. You know the one.
I’ve been silent for too long and can no longer bear to keep this inside: @hyacinthsgirl is a good person and deserves many good things.

COMPLIANCE - OR so he had learnt - was the best weapon he currently had to stay alive until he found a way to escape his cage and come back in the oceanic depths. It was not as hard nor as humiliating as he had first thought. Compliance meant being quiet, watching everything carefully, staying out of trouble until he knew this new… life of his better.
He hesitated for a moment, then took a deep breath and started singing. Just like the hunters who had captured him had inferred, his singing was not dangerous - it would never force anyone to dive in the waters to never come back - yet it was not even slightly similar to human singing. Something more echoed in it, something unknown, not earthly at all. No one, not even the most uncouth person, would have dared to say it was not beautiful.
◕ ⊱ As he stared down at the creature through the bars, Lieven began to wonder why he insisted on putting himself through this torture, going as far as to pay a fortune for it. This went beyond revenge -- he could have the thing sealed away, or simply killed, without ever having to lay his eyes on it again. There was nothing left for him to gain from this kind of encounter.
And then it started to sing.
While it wasn’t the same, (that thing had sung human words for them at the time) it still made his blood go cold. For a few moments he remained frozen, staring down at the creature with wide eyes, lips parted slightly either with enraptment or horror or a mixture of the two, but then a violent shudder went through him and he turned away.
“STOP,” he snarled, one hand coming up to cover his face while the other gripped the edge of the tank with enough force to turn his knuckles white.
hyacinthsgirl:
LiEVEN’S MISCHIEF mirrored in Chris’s eyes, digging up from the depths of the soul a part of her which few had ever seen. Her parents’ strictness had never discouraged her: she was willing to face any kind of punishment, even the one that made her essence weep the most, if it meant she had managed to conquer another piece of the outside world and add it to the mental map she had been (and still was) drawing over the years. Perhaps she should have told Lieven that her parents wouldn’t be as overprotective as usual if she went out with a trusted person; but then again, she liked sneaking out at night much more.
She nodded, agreeing with the plan. She was already aching to see the ship - to go on board, even, if he let her! She’d never be able to see the Lady in her full glory, cutting through waves and surviving the most merciless storms, but hopefully her vivid imagination would make up for her inability to leave. To feel cold breezes caress her skin, to smell salty air every morning and night till she forgot what it was like to breathe on the dry land - how wonderful it had to be!
“Will you wait for me at the port?”
◕ ⊱ It was a gamble, really. Moira and Rowan had no reason to believe that Lieven would do their precious sacrifice daughter any harm. However, despite having spent so much time (how much? half his life? more?) with only humans as his company, Lieven hadn’t forgotten what the Aniusch were capable of. Once the families found out, as they inevitably would, they would surely stop at nothing to get back their last hope. (Their dedication to raising a child solely for slaughter was proof of their desperation, he’d assume.) They might allow him to show Chris his ship. Hell, they might even allow him to take her sailing for a day or two, if he asked, if he smiled that sad smile and swore on his life. Few remained of the De Jaager family, fewer still now that his mother was dead. If something was not done soon, theirs would undoubtedly be the next to fade into oblivion.
Moira and Rowan had no reason to doubt him.
Had Lieven been a more patient man, and had there been more time, perhaps he would have taken a different approach. Fact was, while patience could be forced, there was no time. And as such, they weren’t allowed to have so much of an inkling. They knew he was to depart today -- his ship would leave port this very afternoon. He counted on that, and Chris’ past transgressions, to keep them from suspecting him for at least a little while. It wouldn’t take them very long to realise what he had done, but he didn’t need much.
His lips stretched out into a grin once again. “Aye. I’ll be at the docks waitin’ after the sun’s down. I swear it on me ship.” He put his hand on her shoulder and gave it a gentle little squeeze, sly excitement written all over his weathered face. Chris had a way of reminding him of himself when he had been her age; the unquenchable curiosity, the readiness to break the rules at any given time despite the risks -- locking her up as they had really was a god damn crime. “’Tis beginnin’ te sound like an adventure, innit? Heh!”

Drunk admissions (be good or bad) to Troy
Send me a prompt and a character or ship and I’ll write a drabble based on what’s sent in.
◕ ⊱ There were two kinds of drinking. Drinking to help make a good time even better, and drinking to forget. The former, Lieven did in the presence of his crew. Not very often, of course; usually only when they had something to celebrate. The latter, however, he did by himself in his private cabin. While being around others often made forgetting a whole lot easier, he knew too well what he got like when truly drunk—it was, he figured, better for everyone if he kept that to himself.
Troy however had somehow managed to wedge himself carefully between these two types of his captain’s drinking. Lieven couldn’t for the life of him remember how it had begun, nor in hindsight say how it managed to last, but it worked out somehow, so he let it be. Now they occasionally met in Lieven’s cabin to drink until they passed out. More often than not, those nights would be full of rumbling laughter, silly challenges they made up for each other, and an overall complete lack of common sense.
This was not one of those nights.
Lieven is gazing out to the stars with unseeing eyes, fingertips pressed to the glass. There’s no bottle in his hand; he has already done his drinking for the night. Yet through his dark and muddy thoughts, he still remembers. “I waited for oblivion,” he says, his voice hoarse and uneasy after disuse, “but oblivion would not come.”
For a moment he’s back there again, watching them die for days and days. His throat constricts. He turns back to Troy, shadows drawing deep lines in his face. For an awful moment Troy looks both terribly young and terribly old. Lieven’s fingers are still icy cold against the glass, but he fears that if he moves now, something will have to break. A bottle or a bone or perhaps something else entirely. (He thinks about his bed, thinks about drowning in it, tossing and turning until he’s strangled by the sheets.)
(So far he has always woken up in the morning, though.)
“It’s not just that they died, right?” His face twists when he hears the tremor in his own voice. It takes him several attempts, but eventually he manages to wrench his lips into a smile so sharp it hurts. By then he’s not looking at Troy anymore. He barely even remembers the lad’s there in the first place. “It’s that I killed ‘em.”
hyacinthsgirl:
HIS REFUSAL saddened her at first, but soon light was back on her face. Excitement, happiness and a hint of impatience ran after each other in her eyes, while her lips parted in surprise and then curved in a grin. “Really? Please! I’ve always wanted to see it!” Lady Tantalus - the protagonist - together with him - of so many stories he had told her. In her child’s mind, Chris had tried many times to picture it, but none of the images she created was satisfying. Now, though - now she would know what it really looked like.
“Can I climb on board as well? Is your crew there?” Poor man. She would flood him with questions till their visit was over, and perhaps she would continue even when his ship was not in sight anymore. A small price to pay to satisfy her curiosity.
◕ ⊱ Her reaction -- the unabashed and utter excitement at the prospect of meeting his ship -- briefly made him think she’s such a child still, it’s a miracle no one’s stolen her yet, a line of thought that he squashed not a second after. It shouldn’t be so awfully easy to forget how she was raised, who was keeping an eye for her and what means they were willing to use to keep her from ever growing up, but it was. Lieven had been achingly familiar with the sea since birth, but he didn’t know if Chris had ever even laid eyes on it.
The taste of a bitter kind of hatred settled on his tongue, but it was alright. He had swallowed worse. “Of course, of course! It’s 'bout time ye got acquainted, I’d say.” A grin, baring nearly all his teeth, before he let his expression sober somewhat again. This was not going to be nearly as simple as he made it sound. “I ‘ave an inklin’ some people might not approve.” He avoided calling them her parents. They were about the farthest thing from parents he could imagine.
“So me says we wait ‘till nightfall so they don’t ever ‘ave te know, hm?”

💛 a moodboard about our muses’ relationship
What have you seen, Captain? When she was a little girl (but even now, in the present, right as we speak) this was one of her favorite moments. She’d wait for him to be alone in a sea not of waves but of people, then she’d tug at his shirt and look up at him, eyes full of wonders she had never and would never see. Have you brought anything with you from your journey? And the answer was always yes - he always brought something. The elongated skull of an extinct creature, void-black pearls, bells that jingled like a siren’s laughter. What intrigued her the most, though, was how he looked and talked to her - less ravenously, more sympathetically. He seemed to understand her itch to see the world. He could have snatched her and sailed off with her, and she’d have let him, even just for a month, just for a week.
But no one has ever heard of hyacinths blooming in salty waters.
