Pispala is a city district 2.5 km from the centre of Tampere, Finland. It is located on the northern slope of Pispalanharju, the highest esker in Finland. An old working class district known for its bohemian atmosphere, Pispala has long traditions as a hotbed of artistic activities. Currently Pispala is a popular residential area and together with neighbouring districts Pyynikki and Tahmela it forms an important historical milieu in Tampere. This unofficial, independent blog is dedicated to Pispala images past and present.

It’s the one year anniversary of Jari Niemelä’s death.

Jari Niemelä (2 July 1962  – 13 August 2016), originally of Kokkola, Finland, was both a print and radio journalist, author of several books on local history and member of Tampere Municipal Council.

He was also a Pispala activist, editor-in-chief of Pispalalainen magazine and a noted member in such societies as Pispalan Moreeni and Lauri Viita Society (dedicated to Pispala’s poet laureate).
