STUDENTS TO RECEIVE WORLD’S FIRST MASTERS DEGREES IN ANIMAL LAW - "…while laws have improved and grown, there is still a disconnect between what animals deserve and what protections they get…"

The world’s first advanced degrees in the field of animal law will soon be awarded to students at Lewis & Clark University Law School. The master’s program is conducted by the university’s Center for Animal Law Studies. The program will advance the field of animal law and help people advocate for laws to protect dogs and other animals. Read more from greenbaypressgazette.com:

Mitzi Bolanos adopted a pit bull a few years ago, only to find that discrimination was part of the deal. Because of her dog, she was often told where she could or couldn’t live or work…

In September, the 28-year-old lawyer went back to school to get a master’s of laws in animal law. She wants to use her degree — the first of its kind in the world — to help fight breed bias.

Bolanos will be among the first class of six students to get such a degree from Lewis & Clarke Law School’s Center for Animal Law Studies. Enrollment in the yearlong program is expected to grow to 15 or 20 students in three to five years…

Animal law is still a developing field so perhaps other universities will someday offer similar degrees. Hopefully this program will produce advocates for pit bulls and other dogs. Click here for the full story.

You never hear about a pit bull doing anything good in the media. And they have a stigma to them … and, in many ways, pit bulls are like young African-American males. Whenever you see us in the news, it’s for getting shot and killed or shooting and killing somebody — for being a stereotype. My family adopted a cat whose previous owner declawed her. She had nowhere else to go and couldn’t stay in a shelter room with any other cats since she was continuously bullied without defense. We ended up taking her since we own an extremely docile cat, and she’s now living a happy life. But declawing is never a good idea.

seriously it is literally mutilating your pet it is monstrous i will lose all respect for you if you do this to your cat

God, this is so important. I got my cat when I was younger and my mom declawed him without asking me. Since then he’s had complications with infections in the poorly healed surgical wounds multiple times and he’s frequently in pain. He limps almost all the time and rarely ever jumps down from anything higher than waist hight because of how much the impact of landing on his front paws hurts. For the love of god, do not put your cat through this.

Attention to anyone in the Dayton area:

This is Parker, a little sweetheart of a stray who has been hanging around my apartment complex for a few months. Now though, with the weather getting colder and other cats starting to beat up on her (she’s front declawed and can’t properly defend herself), I’m worried that she won’t do very well; I had to take her to the vet today because a bite on her foot from another cat got infected.

I would love to keep her, but I already have a cat and can only keep one in my apartment. I’m waiting to hear back from some no-kill shelters, but If anyone can find room in their home for this cuddly little cat in the meantime, PLEASE let me know. If you can’t reimburse her medical expenses that’s all right; I’m even willing to get her her shots if that would make the difference in getting her settled with a warm and loving home.

Declawed and a stray? UH! I hate when people declaw their Poor girl. She is gorgeous! I would take he in a heart beat if I lived closer. Someone please help her find a home!
