A recent teen vogue article entitled '*The Pitt* Fans Aren't Happy With Journalists. We Need Real Etiquette When Reporting on Fandom' seems to think so.

In the last two months (march/april 2026) The Pitt fans have had a lot of attention on social media, for just engaging in normal fan activities, however outlets have seen it as something to report on, especially due to the fandom shipping characters.

Teen vogue states:

'I've been watching the coverage play out across The Pitt fandom over the course of its second season. As the show has exploded online, the boundary between observing its fandom and intruding on it has started to blur. Fan fiction, shipping discourse, and kink-coded jokes that once circulated mostly among fans are now being pulled into interviews, articles, and social videos aimed at a much broader audience.'

Publications have been using fan made jokes or fan discussions/discourses as press for the tv show blurring this boundary between fans and the media. Journalists have been using this tool for clicks, however the over exposing of the fans and the fandom, leads to the community becoming over exposed making fans uncomfortable and leading them to be/feel like they are getting used.

A lot of fan work that is made is made for the fan themselves and for the community, the over exposing of this breaches the containment of the sacred space that is fandom.

Moroever the publication Betches posted a headline saying "theres no fandom hornier than The Pitt'. This made many fans uncomfortable, moroever it collapses the fandoms worth and turns it into a disocurse.

By only discussing the more sexual areas of fandom, people disregard the theories and meaningful conversations and connections people have made with the show.

Not all fandom spaces are safe

Though The Pitt is a relatively kind fandom, mostly due to the caring emotional nature of the show, all Fandoms experience discourse. The show is releasing season 2 currently, and its popularity is at an all time high meaning the fandom is growing.

Currently there are fan disagreements over ships (e.g. Kingdom - Mel and Langdon) and character interpretations, with fans concerned with infantilisation (e.g. Whitaker). in addition to this there have also been debates over writing in the show and the loss of characters, which primarily have been the WOC characters.

Though The Pitt is an American tv show on an American streaming services, its reach and its fans are global. With a few of the cast members not being American, one of which being Welsh and another being Australian, the tv show has attracted fans across the world.

From a commercial stand point, the show has excelled in growth and this can be seen through HBO Max moving to the UK.

because the fandom is digital this obviously means fans can connect with people across the world. The Pitt allows audiences to connect world wide creating a large boarder crossing fandom. The application of Tumblr helps this.

Fandom as a space for identity

One of the hallmarks of The Pitt is its diverse cast. this does not just include the doctors but also the patients they treat meaning fans nd audiences will always have the opportunity to find a part of themselves in at least one character. fans can use this media to discover their own identity or commonly in The Pitt fandom reinterpret the characters identities.

Participatory culture/fandom allows free expression and reign of artistic talent and engagement when sharing one’s creations with others. This could be fan art, edits or fiction

Everyone becomes a ‘produser’ (producer and user). This is clear in The Pitt fandom. Especially when looking at season 1. Viewers of season 1 began romantically shipping two doctors together, Dr Santos and Dr Garcia. The tag #garsantos has over 1.6k followers on tumblr. The writers/producers saw the popularity of this ship, and the fans are one of the reasons why it is now cannon in season 2.

Users also establish social connection with others by sharing their creations. Participatory cultures are productive, creative and collaborative.

Why does The Pitt hit so hard?

The show is rooted in realism, and the traumatic events the characters must over come. Most of the fandom discourse that appears tends to be character based, especially between character like Dr Trinity Santos, Dr Frank Langdon and Dr Michael Robinavitch. However the emotional investment enriches the audience and fandoms experience.

Tumblr is close to perfect when looking at it as a place for fans to interact. Blogs and tags allow people to filter down to their own interests quickly, while also allowing fans their own corner on the internet. Whereas communities allow people to discuss or post art of their tv shows with other people in a more forum like format. Tumblr becomes a discussion space and a live reaction hub.

Fans aren't just watching anymore

When looking at fan studies, the Pitt clearly engages with participatory culture (Jenkins). they create content and share ideas.

"Nobody functions entirely within fan culture, nor does fan culture maintain any claims to self-sufficiency. There is nothing timeless and unchanging about this culture; fandom originates as a response to specific historical conditions" (Jenkins 1992, 3).

Moreover fans engage with the theory of Jenkins which is 'Textual Poachers' with Pitt fans expanding the series timeline. This is a common reoccurring theme in The Pitt fandom due to the viewers having no clue on what happens outside of the 15 hour day at the PTMC. This leads to various fanfics about the characters outside of the work day. This also includes emotional intensification and eroticisation.

However, due to this fandom being so active and involved in this show it leads to discourses due to fans head canon's (a reader or viewer's personal interpretation of a fictional work) since certain members of the fandom may not agree with this.

How Fandom has shifted...

Fans were once viewed as a passive audience (Bourdieu) or as obsessed irrational fans. However more realistically fans are seen as active consumers, critical of even 'low brow' cultural products.

Gray et al (2007) refer to this as the ‘First Wave’ of fan studies - reclaiming the status of fans as active, creative, potentially political and often oppositional

Fans on Tumblr write episode breakdowns, while simultaneously analyse characters motivations. More on this, because The Pitt are posting weekly episode drops the fandom is more active than ever, engaging with memes and fan art.
